Doomsday 2012 DVD (2009) Review

Doomsday 2012 DVD (2009)

This film makes a worth-while addition to the series of films about ancient and recent prophecies regarding the alleged end of days on December 21, 2012. It certainly makes better viewing than the recent fictional film 2012. This one does not give much screen time to Nostradamus; that has been done in the History Channel film of that name. Since I have reviewed that DVD elsewhere on Amazon, I won't dwell on it here. This film DOOMSDAY 2012 stands on its own merits because it introduces information not touched upon in the former film -- e.g., the real Merlin called Myrddin in the Welsh, the sylbils from ancient Greece and Rome, and even a computer program called WEB BOT, which inadvertently made predictions about 9/11 and 2012 it was not originally created to make. This film also gives more attention to The Revelations of St. John in the Bible.
Of course, we have heard or read about the predictions of the star-gazing Mayans, the Hopis, the Egyptians, and the Masons. Persons we may not have heard about are such characters as Mother Shipton (Ursula Southill) and a real-life seer named Myrddin, perhaps the basis for the fictional Merlin in the King Arthur stories. It also gives needed attention to the ancient Chinese oracle the I Ching, a system of divination that pre-dates the others we have heard about. In fact, this film consults (no pun intended) just about every oracle except the Tarot and the Runes.
The filming of these programs is astonishingly well-done and credit should be given to the efforts of the producers and cinematographers. Credit should also be given to this program in particular for including the skeptics who want to share their "rational" perspectives on this topic. These are quality productions, not throwaway cheap-o commercial efforts like those we have seen, even theatrically, in the past. Footage from various quarters is well-chosen and skillfully included to aid the interviews with the experts on both side of the controversy.
When I showed this DVD to some Chinese students recently, I was aware of some wide-eyed reactions. One young lady, noted for her insightful comments in my classes, asked me if I believed that this could happen. I was hesitant to answer because I am aware of the impact that statements made by a professor can have. I told her that I thought the evidence was credible and well-presented -- convincing enough as an argument. As this and other programs have emphasized, we have choices. Being aware of these choices gives us the responsibility to try to influence actions that will benefit all mankind. What else can I say -- that I am totally convinced that the world will end on December 21, 2012? I am not. Do I think that significant changes may occur that may alter our existence as we know it? I think it is a distinct possibility. We have seen some of these events already -- earthquakes in Haiti and Chile, tidal waves, global warming indications, a sink hole opening up in Guatemala, a chunk of Antarctica the size of Rhode Island (exactly as predicted in the fictional film THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW) falling into the ocean. I grew up on the Mississippi River and saw what flood devastation could do. I saw what the waterfront of St. Louis looked like after it had been inundated. I have seen flooding in south Georgia (in the US), and the images of floating coffins after graveyards had been violated by torrents of water will also remain in my memory.
I cannot help but remember how frightened many people were about what would happen to worldwide computers at the end of 1999. I remember seeing people loading up their carts with water in the food markets. I also remember what a graduate professor once told me when I was writing about the lost continent of Atlantis and apocalyptic literature regarding the many times that the end of the world had been predicted in the past, which is also mentioned in this film. As she put it, many people don't want to consider the fact that the world might continue long after they are gone -- an interesting perspective, I thought.
However, it is apparent to many of us that to ignore the possibilities of future world-wide devastation is naive.
Then again, remaining naive is what we do best, isn't it? After all, it beats thinking every time.

It is a doomsday that is foretold in the Mayan calendar, the Chinese oracle of the I Ching...even in an Internet-based prophetic software program: December 21st, 2012. Is there any truth to the prophecy that the world will end on that specific date? And why do so many oracles throughout history seem to point to that same dreaded doomsday? This fascinating special cuts through the myths and offers a fact-based examination of the Doomsday prophecy. Also included is a bonus documentary: MAYAN DOOMSDAY PROPHECY which delves even deeper into meaning behind the Mayans and their apocalyptic calendar.

Choose Me (1984) Review

Choose Me (1984)
Average Reviews:

Simply, Choose Me is an edgily romantic, iconic, moodily hilarious, foolhardy movie of a movie by one of the true heirs of Michael Powell. Rudolph's use of colour, textures, the unpredictable, and a literate script make for a unique roundabout. Bujold is a treasure, Warren should be far better-known, and Carradine - well, my favourite line in the movie:
'No, I'm the same. The town's different.'
Love at large, indeed.
Rudolph doesn't always get it spot-on, but this and Trouble in Mind and Equinox is 3 movies better than some directors of greater renown.
Choose it!

Auteur director Alan Rudolph (Afterglow) writes and directs this "intriguing, completely spontaneous" (Roger Ebert) and film-noirish tale of romantic entanglements set in hedonistic mid-1980s Los Angeles. An all-star ensemble cast, including OscarÂ(r) nominees* Lesley Ann Warren (Victor/Victoria) and Genevieve Bujold (Anne of the Thousand Days) dances in and out of love with strangers while searching for the true meaning of life.Anne Love (Bujold) is a successful on-air relationship counselor. Her popular show "The Love Line" has everyone in L.A. listening especially her new roommate, Eve (Warren), who calls in for advice and has no idea she's talking to Anne! But when a strange drifter (Keith Carradine, Wild Bill) enters their lives, things take a sudden, confusing and tumultuous turn in the heart department, forcing everyone to take a closer look at what they really want out of relationships, and more importantly just who they really are.*Warren: Supporting Actress, Victor/Victoria (1982); Bujold: Actress, Anne of the Thousand Days (1969)

Have you ever bought a DVD that delivered EXACTLY what you were expecting? It's a good feeling, huh? Well, that's what CHEEKY did for me. I bought it for a surplus of nudity, and that's what I got! In addition, the movie is also a lot of fun and has some comical scenes in it.
Yuliya Mayarchuk is absolutely stunning as the main character (Carla). She travels from Italy to London where she plans to wait for her boyfriend to arrive. Along the way, some mis-understandings lead to a thrill ride of sexual mis-adventures. Mayarchuk is nude thru most of the movie, which is just fine w/me. Sometimes there's no particular reason for her to be naked, but she is anyway. That's just fine w/me too! She is absolutely adorable.
In this day & age when it seems like the whole world is falling apart, DVDs like CHEEKY are extra-important as they form an avenue of escapism. If you want a movie that is full of mindless fun and lots of gorgeous naked women, then this one should be at the top of your wishlist!

Emmanuelle in Space: A World of Desire (1999)

This DVD was an improvement over First Contact. It has more humor and best of all more Krista Allen. People who were disappointed with FC because Krista Allen was hardly in it will love this DVD because she's featured quite a lot in this one.
I know of at least 4 scenes that appear on this DVD that I've seen bouncing around the internet and there are even more KA scenes on this disk.
Of course this video is a continuation of the story started in FC. Emanuelle is helping a group of aliens try to understand sex and love. The quirky humor that was in the first one is even better on this DVD. I also thought there was a more coherent story that makes its point clearly at the end.
The only extras on this disk are bare bones ones. There are bios for some of the cast and Roger Corman. The "trailer" for the film and for a couple of others by the same company are included.

If You Believe (1999) Review

If You Believe (1999)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Many good Christmas movies have a redemptive theme, such as A Christmas Carol. Some Christmas movies build their theme around self discovery, such as It's a Wonderful Life; and some Christmas movies plead with us to rediscover the Kid within us, such as A Christmas Story or Home Alone. If You Believe weaves all these themes together into a magical story.
The Plot is simple: Susan Stone has worked hard to squeeze all the magic out of her life until she is left lonely, disillusioned, and on the fast track to be fired from her publishing job. Her younger self appears, forces her to take chances, and to rediscover the magic of life. What keeps this story from being just another cliche are the other characters that appear throughout the story: The lawyer from Connecticut, Thom Weller, who has written a weird but funny novel about his physic family; Robin the assistant, who is terrified of Susan; Dorinda, the office competitor who specializes in dirty books; and Mark, the with-it Editor with lots of savey.
The journey is what makes this story a pleasure and reminds one that recovery from self inflicted pain can take place only if one begins to believe in one's self. This very simple film has become a family Christmas tradition.

Shaggy and Scooby-Doo Get a Clue, Vol. 1 (2006)

Ok to be frank the artwork/colorization is lower than just about every other Scooby franchise piece that has been created. Outside of that It really is not to be judged against the traditional Scooby doo "Mystery" types. It is a cartoon in the scooby doo world, that has characters from Scooby Doo, but that's about it. When my son picked it for his birthday I thought that I would shortly be put through cartoon hell. We have just about every other scooby doo made and the kids love them and I enjoyed them also. After watching it it was a pleasant surprise. The artwork took alot to get used to it still is beneath the usual scooby standards but it is fine in it's own way. The real standouts are the writing and the voice acting which is superb. The secondary characters are interesting and funny and best of all it passed the kids test. It is one of their most requested.

Walled In (2008) Review

Walled In (2008)
Average Reviews:

If this film was in French it would be a perfect piece of style conscious, Euro trash "suspense" and "terror-lite" type movie making. It is not in French. But it is, however, unashamed to act out its peculiar premise and its stylishly framed but derivative plot devices with a vague Euro-esque decadence, as though everyone in the film wished that they had in fact been speaking French or Italian. Think "The Shinning" meets "Psycho" meets "Sailor Who Fell From Grace With The Sea". In fact, echoing "Sailor Who Fell...", Mischa Barton bears a more than suggestive resemblance to Sarah Miles, and Cameron Bright bears a striking resemblance to Jonathan Kahn, the boy who played Sarah Miles' son in "Sailor Who Fell..."
There's something about the film that makes you think that the producers and writers were thinking of Asia Argento, or felt that aspiring to make an Asia Argento like film was a high calling.
The production values are much higher than you might have any reason to expect, and the film is stylishly and well designed, lit and photographed. The lead actors all do very serviceable work, and Mischa Barton is especially good in her Sarah Miles mode. However, the presence of many different production and distributing company logos on the front end of the movie is the sure tip off that this direct to video production has been handed around quite a bit to raise the necessary capital and deals to get itself before the camera and finally out into the marketplace. How many companies does it require to fund, produce and distribute a C-list movie? Four or five, evidently.
This Blu-Ray disc is so cheap it has no menus, no pop up menus, no extras and no sound options at all. Nada. It just plays, over and over.
Is it scary? Not really. Is it anxiety provoking? Well, no. Is it peculiar that a world famous architect, thought to be dead, has been secretly living the life of an imprisoned mole at the bottom of an eight story tall well hidden in the center of a Neutra like high-rise apartment building located in the vast empty fields of Saskatchewan, while waiting for a beautiful woman to someday fall into, or be fed into, the shaft by a Norman Bates like looney-kid with a strangely foxy mother, who both live almost alone in the building after all the other residents have either been inexplicably murdered or have moved out, so that the architect may entomb the woman, or himself, using an automatic concrete mixing and pouring system of his own device, built into the building with forethought of this eventuality and a knowledge of ancient Egyptian building practices, so as to make the foundations of the building immortal? Well, uh-huh.
Is it great to watch Deborah Kara Unger be Deborah Kara Unger and to scope out the decaying but stylish mid-century modern sets, furnishings and set dressing? Well, you betcha. This film has to be on the "guilty pleasures" shelf. But, still, it's there for a reason. Oddly recommendable.

This is a good family comedy with Michael J. Fox. Dont confuse it with the other Poison Ivy movie with Drew Barrymore. The Michael J. Fox comedy Poison Ivy came out in 1985. It centers around a kids camp counselor (Fox) who gets a secret crush with another counselor (played by Nancy McKeon from the TV show Facts of Life). KissMe Girl: Girls Kissing - Vol. 2 Review

KissMe Girl: Girls Kissing - Vol. 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This movie features four of my favorite actresses - Bobbi Star, Lexi Belle, Avy Scott and Alexis Texas - all in separate scenes. How nice is that?
Each girl uses her lips and tongue to explore her partner's -- mouth and breasts - but not much else, except for Alexis in the finale who engages in just the briefest moments of oral sex. For the more intimate places -- they use mainly their hands.
But the kissing - and lighting -- are superb and non-stop (for over 2 hours). And the performers are all gorgeous. This is a video both girls and guys can enjoy.
Think of it as a super long - and super sexy - episode of Girls Gone Wild (but with professional actresses) and you'll be very satisfied.

Raggedy Man (1981)

I remember going to the theatre to see this film about a year after "Coal Miner's Daughter". I knew anything with Sissy Spacek in it had to be good. This film is not only good, its sensational with Sissy giving one of her finest performances. (When has she ever been anything but excellent in anything??) I can't add much to what the majority of the reviewers have said about this film. The DVD audio and video are high quality and the film is beautifully remastered. The musical score is top-notch and the forties background cannot be bettered. The supporting cast is excellent as well with Eric Roberts the standout as the kind hearted sailor, Teddy, who assumes the role of the man of the house....at least temporarily. A young Henry Thomas (before E.T.) makes his film debut here, I believe as Sissy's older son Harry. Sissy has great interaction with the children. The film is Sissy's all the way and I believe she should have been nominated for another academy award for this performance. There are many dimensions to Nina. My favorite scene in this movie may be minor but it never fails to make me feel good.....Sissy is sweeping her kitchen and turns the radio on and the Andrew's Sisters come on singing "Rum and Coca Cola" and Sissy carefree and lightheartedly gets into singing along with the music, dancing with the broom. I just love this scene!! The ending packs a wallop and I always get teary eyed. If you haven't seen this film it is worth your time and money to get it. The DVD unfortunately has no extras, no scene selection, no subtitles and is not in widescreen.

I am not a Japanese film historian, so others can elaborate on that aspect. When it started, I wasn't sure I would take to this film, but it draws you in inexorably. Shot on location in Tokyo, remarkably just 3 or 4 years after the end of WWII, it most reminds me of a Japanese Naked City, with echoes and moments reminiscent of other American gangster films all the way back to Public Enemy and The Roaring Twenties of the 30's.
The location photography alone is fascinating in depicting the Japan of 1948 or 49. And the story progresses as a very young Toshiro Mifune wanders through various levels of that postwar society in search of the thief who stole his Colt. On hand also, is that wonderful actor in Kurosawa's repertory company that was the leader of the 7 Samurai, and here too, is the older & wiser mentor to Mifune.
Finally, the movie wins you over for its own reasons. Though early, Kurosawa's composition, framing, and directorial skill is evident. The performances are fine. The atmosphere and location photography ground the film in reality. And it is a more complex film and story than it first appears. And, like early Ford, there is poetry amid the restrictions of budget and resources. And like early Ford, it presages what was to come. Good stuff if you've a mind for it. 5 stars for those folks.

Bedknobs & Broomsticks (Walt Disney Masterpiece Collection) (1971) Review

Bedknobs and Broomsticks (Walt Disney Masterpiece Collection) (1971)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In 1971, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, a film many call a Mary Poppins rip-off, premiered at Radio City Music Hall, but in a version in which nearly half an hour of footage, including full songs, was removed. For its 25th Anniversary in 1996, Disney re-inserted all of the deleted footage except for one musical number in which the picture was lost. The Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences screened this in 1996, but it didn't get a theatrical release, and for years, the only way Americans could get it was either by the 1997 laserdisc release, an import of a European video, or by catching it on occasion on the Disney Channel.
Finally, in 2001, for the film's 30th Anniversary, Disney released a DVD with this extended version of the film. Restored and remastered, the film now has a clearer plot, extended musical numbers, and songs previously deleted. The brilliant "Portobello Road" number is now restored to its original running time, as well as Miss Price's response verses, titled "Don't Let Me Down" during Mr. Browne's song "Eglantine," and the previously entirely deleted songs "With A Flair" and "Nobody's Problems" are restored to the film.
The DVD is a mixed bag. The transfer is quite nice, but Lowry Digital, who did the recent Mary Poppins, Bambi, and Cinderella DVD restorations, could punch it up a little, as on occasion, I saw a bit of grain, and the occasional film artifact, especially during the closing credits and Walt Disney Pictures logo. However, this film has still never looked better on home video, so it's fine with me.
The extras could have been better. An actual making-of on the film would have been nice, including footage used in the Music Magic featurette. While that featurette does give some nice insight on the restoration, there's nothing behind-the-scenes about it except for the creation of the music score. Nothing about the effects, actors, nothing. But it's worth a look for info on the film's 1996 restoration. A larger gallery would have been nice. I do like the inclusion of the two cartoons. And of course, I'm happy to see that they have included theatrical trailers.
The best supplement, however, is the deleted song A Step In The Right Direction. That song was the catalyst that jump started this restoration project to begin with, so there's a bit of irony here in the fact that they couldn't find the footage of the song. So the supplement on the DVD, which is ported over from the 1997 laserdisc and was shown after the movie when the Disney Channel aired the restored version, is reconstructed using still photos of the scene and the original soundtrack. Hopefully one day, the footage will be found and they will be able to reinstate the number into the film, or at least they'll decide to include the photo reconstruction a la the restored version of A Star Is Born with Judy Garland.
Some have complained that there isn't an option to watch the original, shorter version due to its length and/or the poor dubbing of the voices in deleted scenes. (For much of the non-musical deleted footage, original dialogue soundtracks could not be found, so many of the deleted scenes had to be re-dubbed.) While I prefer the restored version despite the dubbing flaws, I think it would be wise of Disney to release both versions on DVD. Next year is the 35th Anniversary - maybe Disney will make a 2-disc DVD featuring both editions, with bonuses spread out on each disc, to appease all fans. Or better yet, a 3-Disc Collector's Edition, with discs 1 and 2 containing both cuts of the film and disc 3 with all the supplements. While neither edition is likely, the 2-Disc is a more likely option.
In conclusion, I can heartily recommend this DVD. The film has been lovingly restored and remastered, featuring almost all of the footage left on the cutting room floor in 1971, and features a nice handful of bonuses.

- The info above for the film at Amazon states the film is 82-minutes and that it's from Media Blasters. The version I bought with the same cover(nun, cross, naked girl) runs 94 minutes and is a 2-disc special edition from Exploitation Digital(reg.1/ntsc). However, I recently found out(from a reputable website) that my copy from Exp.Dig. is missing a 3-minute scene involving female masturbation.
- The second disc includes a 65-min. documentary/interview called "Totally Uncut: The Erotic Films of Joe D'Amato"(it's english sub-titled and rather explicit). Actually, on the back of the dvd it says-90 minutes, but i used my time/text option on the film and it says 65. Extras inclued an explicit trailer reel of 10 of his films(original full-length trailers it looks like, but don't hold me to it), plus a nice photo gallery.
- I'm no dvd-phile expert, but for a late 70's film, the picture and sound quality is quite good. It looks fairly sharp and crisp. The sub-titles are easy to read, and it's presented in a nice widescreen transfer(1.85:1). The fleshtones look really good.
- Speaking of which, the film itself is only average with a head-scratching or eye-rolling induced ending. But the erotic scenes involving attractive, naked, nuns kissing and caressing each other more than make up for the films shortcomings. Although i must admit i was taken off-guard by the rape scene that started out as a rape scene and ended up being rather x-rated. The film is rather explicit(ranges from NC-17 to X at times but don't worry, it never reaches bad porno level) as the warning on the back of the dvd said, but just the sudden explicitness during THIS un-erotic scene was strange.
Despite the missing scene in question, and the discrepancy in the run-time of the documentary, I still say this 2-disc special edition is well worth the price I paid for it. For well under 20 bucks, this is one of the best sexploitation dvd's you could possibly have in your collection. Highly recommended for the sexually-charged erotic scenes, the documentary, the bonus trailers, and the low affordable price.

This does not look very "high def" and certainly not filmed at 1080p. Also, with all that room on a B-ray disc, you think they could make the segments longer than a few minutes; what happened, did the fishy's union demand overtime or something? It's not like there is huge overhead filming a tank of fish with a stationary camera. Waste of money.
