Verdi: Aida (2008) Review

Verdi: Aida (2008)

I was looking for a modern replacement of my old Met Opera DVD of Aida and, as someone who likes the spectacle of Grand Opera, decided to buy this Franco Zeffirelli directed version from La Scala. I noted that a number of the reviewers had mentioned the superimposed images and fade-ins and fade-outs employed by the director and how much it had annoyed them. However, I thought they were probably being too subjective and I couldn't imagine that a video director would have been given so much of a free hand that it could detract from Zeffirelli's production. How wrong I was! In the triumphal march in Act 2 the stage is full of people, the costumes are opulent, the props are magnificent, the orchestra under Chailly is building up to a climax and yet Patrizia Carmine thinks that she can improve on all of this by adding dissolves through drapes and superimposing close-ups of trumpets; not just once, but again and again.
There is so much to like about this production and I no doubt will watch it occasionally, but it could have been so much better without the interference of the video director. I would go so far as to suggest that all might not be lost and the DVD could possibly be re-released without all the offensive and unnecessary additions. How novel that might be, a non-directors cut of the opera.

10 Secrets for Success and Inner Peace (2009) Review

10 Secrets for Success and Inner Peace (2009)
Average Reviews:

If there are spiritual teachers on this planet that should become comedians, it's definitely either T. Harv Ecker or this guy. Wayne Dyer always cracks me up. And yet fills me with hope at the same time. This DVD presents his early notions on life and living but with a dry wit and sometimes (when he is confident in his own message) with a real punch.
Although this isn't his usual down to earth, lets get to the point, "verbally practiced for soundbites" answers to living life more "graciously"... He does still find a place to "still the mind" with logical and respectable inner calm expounded concepts and observations, that my soul eats up and licks the plate clean.
...but the DVD.. i dunno... is edited like something you'd see on your local church channel. It's actually a bit of a turn-off...reeeeally bland... Someone should re-edit this DVD and repackage it & I think it would be a wonderful companion for inner-self-maintenance that shouldn't be missed.

The Deal (+ Digital Copy) (2007) Review

The Deal (+ Digital Copy) (2007)
Average Reviews:

"The Deal" is a light comedy with a bit of romance and satire thrown in. It follows the story of one Charlie Burns (William H. Macy, who also co-wrote the screenplay), a failed Hollywood film producer, who uses his nephew's period-piece script (about 19th century British writer and statesman Benjamin Disraeli) for his "comeback." While Charlie struggles to get what he wants (sometimes by cheating and lying), he meets a beautiful studio executive Deidre (Meg Ryan). I almost forgot to say that Charlie is a lady's man, too.
I am always interested in the "films about filmmaking" sub-genre. You know, there are so many of them - "Adaptation" "Bowfinger" etc - and some are great ("Day for Night") and some terrible ("An Alan Smithee Film: Burn Hollywood Burn" ... what else?). Thanks to the cast (that includes Elliot Gould as rabbi and L.L. Cool J. as spoiled action star), "The Deal" is mildly amusing, but the film's satire is not sharp and the jokes are not very funny.
Don't get me wrong. I like Meg Ryan and William H. Macy. But somehow it seems they are not the right choice for the roles they are playing in "The Deal." There is no chemistry between the two leads to make me believe that they fall in love with each other. Besides, the story itself doesn't convince me. How can a down-and-out film producer like Charlie get a 100 million dollar action movie greenlit when everyone in Hollywood knows he has been unsuccessful so long?
All in all "The Deal" is not that bad, at least to me, but it has no originality either, except the location of South Africa. Perhaps this is the most convincing part of the film.

Product DescriptionThe third installment to this fun series is comprised of smaller shorts, each with its own story and lovely lads of course. In "Love Me Even If You Don't," a hot muscular gay farm boy (Bryan Wilde) who has spent years entertaining straight boys is getting tired of this dead end routine and realizes that what he really needs is a different thing completely. He zeroes in on a blond fair skin neighbor with a 10" dick (Newcomer Mike Austin) to quench his love thirst. He will be ready to pay Mike's rent for a whole two months if that stud can pretend to be his lover for one day only (not just sex the whole emotional "husband" Enchilada.) The soft-core erotic session that follows is one of the most riveting Toby has ever filmed, it includes a hammock milking session, camping in a tent and much more. The second short features Shawn Lane and Brenden Black finding themselves in a photo session...totally turned on. The scene is purely magical as the 18-year-old Brenden drools over Shawn's massive endowment, trying to pull himself together and remain professional. It's hard. The third short, starring Ryan di Noor from Like a Moth to a Flame, is about a gay guy, who in a very cunning way, with the help of his girl buddy, manages to lure Jonathan Taylor into a hysterical web of deceit. In the fourth short, Jordan River has the daunting task of researching the campus heteros and finding who of them has had sex with another man...term papers can be hell. He finds Jake Red a very sexy redhead and as he asks him intimate questions his fantasies are running wild. In the fifth short Brenden and Shawn reunite a few months later, this time Shawn that straight enigmatic neighbor is willing to do so much more, he certainly expanded his horizons. The sixth and final short is the story of a gay snob who is just too good for about anything, well at least that is the facade he is trying to promote. He never acts as the submissive one, does not do any drugs, and hates poor people. His friends are on a mission to expose the real him to the world in a very tricky and funny and sexy way. Anyone who remembers "Soir de Paris" from SBGB 2 this one here is it's distant cousin. Filmed in one of Chicago's fanciest gym telling a story that is both hysterical and poignant.

Control Review

This movie probably isn't worth 5 stars but for an unheard of movie I only picked up for Ray Liotta and Willem Dafoe, that ended up being pretty good, now that's rare. I mean, how often do you pick up a movie that you've NEVER HEARD OF, with an unheard of director and end up loving it? Barely ever!
Control is a thriller with a highly creative plot and with some seriously awesome acting by Ray Liotta. I am a huge fan of his and he was fantastic in this movie. Don't believe me? Just watch this movie then! Watch his facial expressions, especially when he's playing thta video game and blowing away all of the cops.
The movie is about a criminal (Ray Liotta) convicted of numerous murders who instead of beeing put to death, is able to be one of the tests of a new drug proposed by a doctor (Willem Dafoe). This drug is supposed to be able to transform criminals, making them feel pity and remorse about what they've done. From one day to the next, this criminal is changing, crying, and is nice. He is put out in the real world to see how he will manage. What will hapeen? Well, you'll just have to find out! The ending is great and a good exclamation point on a great movie. The movie also happens to have its touching moments that made me think...a lot. It goes into the head of a psycho, and shows his human side. Why did he become who he did? This movie gives all the explanations, explanations probably true for most people like this one.
Well, for a different movie with an original plot (similiar in originality to Unforgettable's) and a good leading performance, with some good thrills and even sweet moments, check this unheard of movie out.

Bikini Girls From the Lost Planet (2006) Review

Bikini Girls From the Lost Planet (2006)
Average Reviews:

Oh boy! Another bikini movie from Retromedia. And it's a good one. It reuses a classic B movie plot that never gets old. A planet populated entirely with women sends two cute, scantily clad girls to Earth to find virile men that can be brought back and used to insure the survival of their race.
There are seven sex scenes. Four are boy/girl. One is girl/girl. One is boy/girl/girl/girl. And one is boy/girl/boy/girl. The women are all hot and include veteran bikini girls Nicole Sheridan and Beverly Lynn, as well as some new faces: Christine Nguyen, Syren, Michelle Lay, and Rebecca Love. All the women do a great job during their sex scenes. Unfortunately, Rebecca doesn't have a sex scene is this movie, she just stands around topless.
Extras include some bloopers and trailers for other Retromedia bikini movies.
I recommend this one.
