First Degree Review

First Degree
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Made for cable, "First Degree" has more twists than a bag of pretzels, and is in many ways over-plotted, but for TV fare, it's entertaining, and has some interesting characters in the story. Detective Rick Mallory (Rob Lowe) is called in to investigate the murder of a rich businessman, and almost immediately falls for the beautiful widow Hadley (Leslie Hope). Before you can say "whodunit," they are madly in lust. The question that needs answering is who committed the murder? Did Hadley hire a hit man? Was it Joe the gangster? Suspicions abound, and sometimes the plot gets a little muddled, but the cast is attractive, and the lovely soundtrack by Bruce Fowler adds to the enjoyment of the film.
Det. Mallory's precinct buddies (Tom McCamus and Joseph Griffin) are clever and amusing, and most endearing is Jacob the writer (Peter Boretski), who is the only one Mallory can't fool. There's a lot of drinking, smoking, and one grisly murder scene, so this police thriller is not suitable for young children. Directed by Jeff Woolnough, written by Ron Base, and with cinematography by Glen MacPhearson, "First Degree" is sleek looking, never boring, and remembering that "it's just a TV movie" helps. Total running time is 98 minutes.

The Man Show: Girls on Trampolines Review

The Man Show: Girls on Trampolines
Average Reviews:

The other reviewers are right about this being nearly as mindless as is possible- and the music and ridiculously fake and repetitive sound effects (of girls squeaking and exclaiming) may drive you insane, but here's what they forgot to tell you; in nearly half of the trampoline scenes, one or more of these hot chicks are topless. Which alone makes it worth the price of admission, trust me. This is total, gratuitous eye candy that may lead to eye and neck exhaustion as you follow these hotties bodies up, and down, and up...

Journey of the Heart/Heart's Adrift Review

Journey of the Heart/Heart's Adrift
Average Reviews:

I originally bought this DVD solely for "Hearts Adrift", which was a USA Network original movie that aired in 1995. I have been waiting for the DVD release for years and have searched pretty much every movie website & media store for VHS copies, but to no avail. Then, Amazon.com finally sent me notice that it was being released & would be available. I was thrilled!!
Sydney Penny & Scott Reeves are a winning combination as polar opposites, who come together, thanks to their widowed parents, whom happen to share a romantic past of their own. This film is a great testament to the adage that "sometimes you need to go back in order to move forward". It also happens to feature several well-known soap (daytime and primetime) stars. In addition to Penny (All My Children et al.) & Reeves (The Young & the Restless), it also features Kathleen Noone & Don Murray of "Knots Landing" fame and Nicholas Coster (Santa Barbara et al.). With a bit supporting part played by Julie Benz of Showtime's thrill ride "Dexter", as a young debutante vying for Reeves' Kyle Raines' affections with Penny's Max.
The other film in this double feature is "Journey of the Heart" with Cybill Shepard, whom I also enjoy and wish she would either return to TV or make more films, preferably with Bruce Willis. I have loved them together ever since "Moonlighting" and miss their effortless spark & terrific chemistry together. "Journey" is a very heartfelt film based on a true story of a blind, mentally challenged, musical savant pianist and his courageous mother/family. I recall seeing the movie on TV or cable many years ago. It was definitely a tender & heartwarming refresher.

Star of David: Hunting for Beautiful Girls (1979) Review

Star of David: Hunting for Beautiful Girls (1979)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was asked once how come Japanese directors Takashi Miike is more appreciated in the Western world than in his own native land as a master of the macabre, the darkly twisted and of truly unnerving material; well, my answer was it is because Japan has been doing all sorts of twisted and sick films that may make one wonder just how it is they've been pulling off this stuff in the early 70's while we in the U.S. have just began to get used to the term `torture porn'. When European filmmakers produces a film that pushes the boundaries of taste and gruesome content, it is art but when Asian countries do the same it is considered exploitation and extreme. It is a double standard if you ask me. Well, in the world of exploitation and cult cinema, there are a lot of cases when a film is purely offensive and sleazy but there is that very rare opportunity that you would come across a film that transcends that reputation which becomes a compelling piece despite its graphic violence.
Such is the case with "The Star of David: Hunting for Beautiful Girls" by Japanese director Norifumi Suzuki, the director of "Sex and Fury" and "The School of the Holy Beast". Much of Japan's best directors began their filmography directing "Pink" horror films and on Suzuki`s resume, "Star of David" stands out. Suzuki is a maestro of delivering movies with an explicit subject matter such as gratuitous nudity, sexuality, depravity and brutality with a malicious, arresting and "artful" manner.
The film begins with the sound of police sirens. The police are looking for an escaped rapist, robber and murderer who we now see as having taken refuge in a huge house. This fugitive has taken a professor and his pretty wife hostage with the intention of robbing them. While there, this monster of a human being decides to have a little fun by tying up the professor's wife and taking advantage of her sexually while her husband is forced to watch. It is bad enough to have a husband watch his wife get violated and her reluctantly enjoying the act; what's worst is that the woman gets left behind pregnant with this killer's child and a husband who now gets his kicks by beating on his wife for the dishonor brought him by enjoying sex with her attacker.
Many years have passed and we now see a young man named Tatsuya (Shun Domon) who looks normal on the surface but has been become obsessed with Hitler's views on extermination; Tatsuya is also preparing to embrace his own genetic depravity. He begins by murdering his own recognized father, killing his mistress, and kidnapping other young women to practice on this view of his. He takes them to his own private torture chamber where he sexually molests and humiliates them. Now, when his natural father shows up at his doorstep, what further evil will happen?
"Star of David: Hunting for Beautiful Girls" can easily be written off as an excuse to display one taboo subject after another and the film does flirt around with the boundaries of taste; it does execute its intricate storyline with a daring style and impressive scheme. Sure, the themes of mental torture, serious sadism, necrophilia, some bestiality, (there's even a guy who whacks off while looking at World War 2 holocaust photos) seem very commonplace in the film but it does package it neatly behind a thought-provoking message (albeit twisted) behind all the graphic violence and madness. There is actually a compelling story behind all the elements of exploitation as the film presents a study in how to take those extreme elements to the boundaries of genre pushing.
Norifumi Suzuki is a good director and displays skill as he frames the twisted sequences that comes very close to becoming pure smut. The film's provocative elements comes over Suzuki's fondness for Nazi/Jewish themes. I guess this is his way of condemning the evils of the holocaust and as to how the madness may awaken the darkness of man. Suzuki makes a bold statement that all men are born good; but they all have the ability to degenerate to pure cruelty depending on their experiences. The film succeeds in making its viewer uncomfortable with its very discomforting sequences; if this film is any indication, the Japanese really do like their twisted violence.
The film also has a romantic angle to it as there is also hope for Tatsuya in finding true twisted love in the form of his childhood friend Yumiko, played by Miss Japan Hiromi Namino. Yes, this film can be a good valentine's day movie but please wait for a year before showing this film to your significant other. This film achieved attention when it was promoted as the film where Namino debuts as an actress and sheds all clothing. Much of the film's burden falls on Shun Domon in a very complicated role. There are a lot of supporting female characters in the film; all of them gets naked and gets to be put in very uncomfortable, extreme situations.
"Star of David: Hunting for Beautiful Girls" is a crude horror movie that just requires a twisted talent to deliver the brain-scorching material, titillation, violence and weirdness with an outward nastiness that complements its subtext. Genetics or upbringing...morality or immorality...predestined or by choice...conquest and sacrifice. It is a wonderful piece of cinematic perversion and still stands as one of the seediest pieces of exploitation cinema ever produced. It is essential to any fan of pink films and Japanese cinema.
Recommended timidly because of its content [4 Stars]

Penn & Teller's Magic and Mystery Tour Review

Penn and Teller's Magic and Mystery Tour

As a longtime Penn & Teller fan, I've become used to, and even look forward to, their "snide and sarcastic humor" but this show is SO much more! This isn't about two Vegas magicians telling you about magic - its about two very knowledgeable men who are students of the art form and want to trace it back to its roots.
These guys know every move and trick in the book, and have made alot of money with that knowledge, yet they come across as genuinely humbled by the experiences that we witness with them. I found myself comparing this to Michael Palin's fantastic series of travel specials, where you feel that you are travelling right along with them.
I hope they do more of these shows one day!

Join the maverick masters of illusion as they trek to China, India, and Egypt, and witness astounding feats of magic and other inexplicable things. Pack your bags and take a funny and unpredictable trip that reveals rarely seen tricks, outrageous characters-and Penn's true feelings about puppeteers. Watch as Penn & Teller gawk in amazement at an Indian snake-swallower. See traditional Bengali performers "torture" family members . . . just as local authorities get into the act. Venture to Calcutta for a "performance" of the legendary Indian Rope Trick. Enter the Egyptian tomb at Beni Hassan for a modern "inside" look at the ancient "cups and balls" trick. See how Penn and Teller survive a collision with a hay truck and enjoy a vintage performance in an extremely remote-and extremely cold-village. Caution: This program contains a few scenes that may not be suitable for the squeamish or faint of heart.

When I Knew Review

When I Knew
Average Reviews:

The documentary "When I Knew" is a collection of aptly edited stories about when people found out they were gay. Unfortunately, it's only 30 minutes or so long and could have benefited from more exploration into individual stories (this is available in the special features section of the DVD, but sadly the stories there are really not terribly interesting). However, the documentary makers do wonderful things with the short time they have, showing both the variety and similarity the gay community shares. This is a movie, very well produced and involving the interviews of quite a multitude of gay people, that will resonate with any gay person and will communicate a lot about the process of coming out to any straight person. Something important to have around.

Gwendoline - Unrated Director's Cut (aka - The Perils of Gwendoline in the Land of the Yik Yak) (1985)
Average Reviews:

I have been wanting to pick up this obscure movie for years, ever since I first watched it some 12 years ago. Unfortunately, up until now it has been out of print - even on VHS. I was un-willing to pay an obnoxious price for a used version on Video tape. Now there is no reason to fret any more: Gwendoline is here & she's on DVD!!!
The original title of the film was The Perils of Gwendoline in the Land of the Yik Yak. It is basically a low-budget INDIANA JONES type of adventure movie, only with a whole lot more erotica mixed in. One could say there are elements of Monty Python as well. Brent Huff plays a Harrison Ford wannabe. He has a great physique for an adventure movie, but he's not a particularly good actor. The third major character is Gwendoline's sidekick / friend, Beth (played by French actress Zabou).
The overwhelming reason to buy this DVD may be summed up in 3 words: Tawny Kitaen topless! While she has stripped down in a few other movies (such as WITCHBOARD), one needs to have the pause button on the DVD remote handy to get a good look. Not so with this film. She is topless throughout most of the 2nd half of the film - and that's a very good thing!!!
I can't for the life of me understand why Tawny has not had a more robust acting career or why she didn't make many more movies. For one thing, there have not been too many female redhead movie stars. Tawny is gorgeous and there are a few scenes in this film where she is absolutely ravishing - to the extent that she took my breath away. She is also a better actress than a great many women in Hollywood.
To be sure, this is a very corny movie. Tawny and Zabou are good actors; the rest of the cast are all a bit stilted. I believe it was originally in French as the people all suffer from dubbing-man's disease. However, it is also a very fun movie, and I had forgotten just how cute Zabou is.
So, if you are even a remote fan of Tawny Kitaen you need to JUMP at the opportunity to buy this one. It's a feel good movie and Tawny is the one who will making you feel good!

The Scarlet and the Black (1983) Review

The Scarlet and the Black (1983)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Gregory Peck and Christopher Plummer give outstanding performances as Monsr. Hugh O'Flaherty(Peck) and SS Col. Herbert Kapler(Plummer). The action and suspense of the movie keeps it going at a brisk pace. The story follows Peck as a Vatican official trying to save Italian Jews and Allied escaped POW's from the hands of the German SS. Plummers portrayal as Col. Kapler is both chilling and frightening, especially when he personally executes a Catholic priest who was caught helping the Resistance. Peck's portrayal of Father O'Flaherty is very moving to watch. The intelligence and compassion of this man truly shows through and shows how much Father O'Flaherty deserved the awards and decorations he received from the Allies after the war. And the ending is very surprising as well! It is also a plus having the movie shot in Rome where the actual events took place. A truly classic movie. I highly recommend it.

Love at First Kill Review

Love at First Kill

Filmed in 2007 and originally titled THE BOX COLLECTOR, this noirish thriller has echoes of PSYCHO and other loony mother movies, though inferior in quality.
margot Kidder employs the overwrought style of Davis or Crawford--without panache. She's more like Rod Steiger, gleefully chomping up the scenery.
The story is incoherent with superfluous subplots and a twist ending that does little to explain all you've witnessed beforehand,
It managed to hold my interest in spite of this incoherency, so it's not a total failure.
More a rental than a keeper.

Basketball Diaries (1995) Review

Basketball Diaries (1995)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Director Scott Kalvert creates a moving and realistic recount of the true story of Jim Carroll, played superbly by Leonardo DiCaprio, a New York City teen who at the height of his high school basketball career, falls victim to drugs and violence in the rough streets.
Look for the real-life Jim Carroll who makes a cameo appearance as a crack addict in the scene where young Jim sitting in a back alley listening to the addict preach about his "high" while boiling his fix.
Fine supporting performances by the entire cast and a musical score including original songs performed by Jim Carroll's band. Especially memorable is the acid-rock message song: "These Are All the People Who've Died" which is a tribute to Jim's fallen friends throughout his life.
The serious messages in this film SCREAM out at teens, but also are sombering to adults who realize the sometimes hopeless devastation that wracks a family during a drug crisis. Your heart breaks for Jim's mom and his mentor, an African American ex-druggie who cleaned up and wants nothing more than to help Jim out of his living hell before it consumes him.

Like all things in life, sexual prowess comes only with practice. Practice makes perfect, and the Karma Sutra helps guide you to that state of sexual euphoria we all want to reach; where endorphins run rampant and babies are made. Sure, you won't be fully-naked, male Fabio after twenty minutes with the DVDS, but you will have a better understanding of the sexual fundamentals. Karma Sutra is for couples looking to explore past regular bedroom intercourse. If you found the book just a tad hard to understand, the DVD has visual aids.
I'd recommend it if one's sex life needs a little bit of spicing up.

The Sci-Fi Boys Review

The Sci-Fi Boys
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In memory of Forrest j Ackerman who died in early December 2008 of congestive heart failure. You will be missed, Uncle Forry.
This loving little documentary opens with an introduction by Peter Jackson one of the many famous film makers interviewed and perhaps the most passionate. It seems somehow appropriate to open with his closing remark which is a quote from a song by Fran Walsh written for RETURN OF THE KING:
"Dream of those that came before
They're calling from across the distant shore..."
This is how Jackson sees the Sci-Fi Boys, as calling to us from afar to come join them in their strange, mystical worlds filled with adventure and monsters and things of which we mundanes dare not dream. Above all THE SCI-FI BOYS is a love letter to these three guys who made it all possible through their own love of the genre; esteemed science fiction author Ray Bradbury, special effects genius Ray Harryhausen, and most of all to one Forest j Ackerman known affectionately for the past 6 decades as Uncle Forry to readers of "Famous Monsters of Filmland" which he edited.
There are genuinely touching moments when the stars pay tribute to The Boys, such as when special effects wizard Ray Harryhausen is to receive his Lifetime Achievement Award at the Oscars' ceremony and Tom Hanks introduces him by saying," Some people say CASABLANCA or CITIZEN KANE, I say JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS is the greatest film ever made." And who could disagree with him in their heart of hearts?
There are numerous segments in which people such as Spielberg, Lucas, make-up and special effects artists Rick Baker and Steve Johnson, Donald Glut, Dennis Muren (himself the winner of 8 Oscars in his capacity as Special Visual Efects Supervisor at Industrial Light and Magic), and others too numerous to mention sing the praises of Uncle Forry and relate how when they were only little tykes Forry's magazine not only first got them started in film making, but also encouraged them to keep going when things got rough.
My favorite segment is John Landis telling how back when he was a kid only the geeks used to make these little home movies with their friends and how nobody wanted to hang around with them. And as he's telling this story it turns into a cute, animated geeky-John Landis telling the story. It was very clever, a real highlight for me. Another highlight is a bit of animation from Willis O'Brien (who did the original KING KONG)that I'd never seen before involving a caveman and his domesticated dinosaur.
The down side to the film is that the producers tend to put the spotlight on themselves a bit too much. While looking at their childhood films is fun, it would have been more interesting if they could have including more films from other tween and teen film makers of the same vintage. Another negative is uncaptioned photos in the stills gallery. One was a picture of Forry in the first costume ever worn at the first World Con. I knew what it was but without advance knowledge the photo wouldn't have registered with readers at all. Many other pix have people in them whose identities you must surmise. Another negative is that the "tour" of the Ackermansion is far from extensive. I had the good fortune to visit Forry in the early 90s and thus know how impressive the colection really was. But the pluses here outweigh the minuses for any fan of the genre. There are clips and quotes from all sorts of interesting characters as I've already said, including Roger Corman and little "Stevie" King who sent Forry his first short story at the age of 12 or 13.

The Emmanuelle Collection (Emmanuelle / Emmanuelle 2 / Good-bye Emmanuelle) (1974) Review

The Emmanuelle Collection (Emmanuelle / Emmanuelle 2 / Good-bye Emmanuelle) (1974)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This boxed set presents the three original Emmanuelle movies, the ones starring Sylvia Kristel. There were lots of imitators, most ranging from bad to worse and beyond. At the time of the first Emmanuelle, though none of that had yet happened - please hold that happy thought. Perhaps these three aren't high art, but they're generally good entertainment for adults. They are also so different from each other that they deserve to be reviewed individually, not as a lump.
* Emmanuelle: Back in the 70s, this was a groundbreaking movie. It was openly erotic, and openly meant for the general public. I'll leave the social commentary to others. For me, it's just a beautiful movie. It's set in beautiful tropical locations. It stars beautiful actresses, back before implants were part of the uniform. Most of all, it shows beautiful (if artificial) exchanges of physical affection between Emmanuelle and just about everyone, man and woman.
Still, there were a few things about this movie that I didn't care for. It usually depicts Emmanuelle as a passive figure, to be led and acted upon. I prefer the stronger character in the sequel. Later parts of the movie depict coercion, something I really don't care for. The haughty poseur at the end was annoying, but distantly true to the book. Still, book fans shouldn't get their hopes up. This movie is its own creature, and pleasant enough if taken on its own terms.
* Emmanuelle 2: The best of the bunch, I think. This is a warmly sensuous film. This might even be the one to use for introducing a shy viewer to movies about physical happiness. Emmanuelle is fully her own woman - every scene lies well within her consent and enjoyment. A new character, Anna Maria, is a sweet, innocent young thing. Emmanuelle, of course, broaches that innocence in an elegantly filmed sequence of encounters. A few scenes, like the infamous "Jade Club", come across as crude, but only when meant to. Still, they don't seem threatening. That's another aspect of this film that I like better than the first.
It's too much to say that this movie has a plot, but it does have a story line of sorts. The movie is really just about happy eroticism, though, the kind that relies more on your imagination than on actual imagery. It's sort of like a musical where I come out humming the tunes even if I can't remember the words. Couples might like this movie, even bashful couples, and might like playing along with the actors on screen.
* Goodbye Emmanuelle: This is the third and last of Kristel's Emmanuelle movies, but don't hold her responsible. The backer had run into censorship problems with the second movie, and wanted to make sure that didn't happen again. The result is a disappointing attempt at being serious. It completely lacks the warm mood and physicality of the two earlier efforts. Even the background music has a very different style, one that I found far less successful in framing the visuals and dialog.
It tries to show Emmanuelle and husband Jean growing into a more stable, monogamous relationship. Instead, it just descends into petty jealousies and possessiveness. Jean, especially, pulls tricks that would have seemed silly even in high school. Perhaps the movie meant to show swelling affection and bruised feelings. Instead, it just showed swollen egos and bruised pride.

Once Upon a Christmas (2006) Review

Once Upon a Christmas (2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
ONCE UPON A CHRISTMAS is a made for tv movie filled with schmaltz, goo and Christmas sentiment; however, it's message is good and it's an enjoyzble movie to sip some egg nog with.
Kathy Ireland is gorgeous; can she act? Well, in the Christmas spirit, let's just say if anyone can get away with syrupy dialogue, Ireland's the one. The rest of the cast is mediocre with the exception of the delightful Liz Torres who is wonderful as the Tooth Fairy.
The plot revolves around Santa's disillusion with Christmas, so his youngest daughter Kristin (Ireland) convinces her pop to let Christmas go on if she can change one family's whose name has been crossed off the nice list. Matters are complicated by her witchy older sister Rudolfa, who wants Christmas to go in a new direction--Christmas Fools Day with whooopie cushions, etc.
The movie did well enough that it spawned a sequel TWICE UPON A CHRISTMAS, which I haven't seen yet, but I don't have a burning desire since this one is just okay. Merry Christmas.

Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree (1966) Review

Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree (1966)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this set because my daughter so enjoyed her other video, "The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh" (which seems to be out of print now). I didn't realize that this set is essentially a repackaging of the same material from that video (1 of the 4 tapes is new material). I much prefer the original tape to this set - there are a lot of ads at the beginning of every tape, so the "ads to watchable video" ratio is extremely high in the set version. There were ads on the original tape, too, but you simply went through them once and then had essentially 3 tapes of uninterrupted watchable video. This set is clever packaging that makes it look like you're getting a lot at a good price, when in fact you're essentially getting one movie over multiple tapes and 4 times the amount of ads that you would normally see.

If I were rating this movie solely on quality of the film, it would get one star. if i were rating it solely on how much i love to watch it even though it's awful, it would get 5 stars. SO I averaged it and got 3.
The dialogue is horrendous, the effects cheesy, the music (not the soundtrack which is great, but the score) indescribably awful. It looks like a made for TV movie.
However- I can't stop watching it. i saw it 3 times in the theater and pre-ordered my own copy. It entertains me. Plus, Edward is nice to look at... oh, James too. LOVE James. To me this movie is absolutely hysterical- where it doesn't intend to be. The scene where Edward first sees Bella in class and he looks as if he may throw up on her??? Great! The look that Billy Black and Edward exchange as they pass each other in their cars? Priceless. I love the baseball scene! But the crouch down and prepare to fight stance they take at the end... Can anybody say Power Rangers? But just mentioning all this makes me want to watch it again. I know it makes no sense. It just has that power.
I should be embarrassed to like this, but I'm not. I will watch it over and over again proudly. I will recommend it to anyone I can. Watch it and love it. But know that it's terrible and know that it can't compare to the book and that all of it's charm is due to it's cheesiness.
