Voodoo Cowboys. The title pretty much says it all. This is a robust independent attempt at creating a voodoo zombie hybrid of the spaghetti western (ala The Good the Bad and the Ugly) and the post-apocalypse film (ala The Road or Book of Eli). On the whole, they succeeded, though the film is certainly not without its flaws. The script must have been huge, because even though the film has a ton of action, there is a ton of dialogue, character development, and in-depth exploration of the religion of voodoo, and I didn't expect that from a low budget movie like this. It was a pleasant surprise, even though I had to watch the film a second time before picking up on all the different nuances. The costuming is basic but does a good job of blending the `wasteland cowboy' look with a voodoo mojo flair. The sets look like they are mostly just `found' locations, places that already looked really cool, then they added some things to spice them up, but it works to create that sort of desolate and abandoned vibe. The action is good for an independent film, so nothing fancy, but it works. The zombies are an interesting addition to the film, but are presented as more of a nuisance than a real threat, and as with most low budget zombie movies, the `actors' playing the zombies weren't that great. Still, there's plenty of shooting & stabbing, and one of the zombies actually gets killed with a post-hole digger. Fun. If you are looking for a movie that is going to give you a healthy dose of voodoo action horror along with your dialogue driven western apocalypse, then this is the one.
