Dos Peliculas Mexicanas: Lagrimas de Mi Barrio/Corona de Lagrimas Review

Dos Peliculas Mexicanas: Lagrimas de Mi Barrio/Corona de Lagrimas
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this DVD because of Corona de Lagrimas. I saw this movie some 10 years ago, and I really loved it! The DVD is great, the audio and visual are of a very high quality, this is not a bootleg, it's really hard to obtain these kind of films, it's considered a classic! Unfortunately, there are no subtitles (Spanish only). The story is about a Mother who faces life with her three adolescent sons. Even though it's a film of 1968, the problems exposed make this movie be up to date. I don't want to ruin it, you MUST see it. It's a film about jealousy, selfishness, parent embaressment, syndrom of superiority and much MUCH MORE! ENJOY! Thank you for bringing great films to DVD!
P.S. Lagrimas de mi Barrio is a very sad film. I really didn't buy it for it. It's not my type of film, but you might enjoy.

The Gathering: Jesus is Coming, is He Coming for You? Review

The Gathering: Jesus is Coming, is He Coming for You
Average Reviews:

THIS MOVIE IS AWESOME! I can't say enough good things about it! It will give you goosebumps, and give you lots to think about. Anybody who believes in God's Holy Word will be thrilled by this movie. I make copies of it & give to people I care about. I highly recommend it! It is only an hour long, but that could be a good thing, as far as getting a young person to watch it anyway. Well acted, good storyline, it's ALL good!
P.S.-Oh yea, the guy who stars in this movie, Dan Kruse, is the same guy who stars in the movie "Escape from Hell", which I also reviewed. That movie is good, but not as good as this one! I like his character in this movie MUCH better!

Driver 23 & Atlas Moth (2002) Review

Driver 23 and Atlas Moth (2002)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this based on the good reviews posted here, and I can say that I wasn't disappointed. In Driver 23/Atlas Moth, a window is provided into the world of Dan Cleveland, and what a strange world it is...one filled with delusions of grandeur and unfulfilled dreams. I knew a guy exactly like Dan, someone who was involved in so many projects, who had big dreams, but was never quite able to grab that brass ring. What's so endearing about Dan is his eternally optimistic outlook, the 'never say die' attitude. No matter what roadblocks are placed before him, he tries to go over them, around them, or even under them and continue to plod along. While endearing, this attitude can be harmful. Most people know when to quit, change gears, and focus their energies towards more fruitful ventures, but Dan seems determined to ride it out, regardless of the consequences, even if it means losing everything. Sorry to say my friend passed away sometime ago, but I feel like I got to spend a little more time with him in watching Dan and his travails.
Driver 23 is a movie about Dan, a delivery driver by day, and the lead singer of a Minneapolis-based rock band called Dark Horse. Dan suffers from a myriad of problems that he takes medication for, but none of that seems to slow him down. Half of his band quits, and he keeps going....his wife moves across the country to take a job, and he keeps going. A man truly determined to fly into the face of logic regardless. And I swear, that guy must always have a roll of duct tape with him, and he's quite liberal with its uses. Oh yeah, I also loved when Dan built his own recording studio in his basement. It looked so creepy and funky as he used whatever materials he had handy, cinder blocks, pieces of wood, etc.
In Atlas Moth, we get to see a continuance to where Driver 23 left off. Dan, now that his wife has left for good, lives a somewhat squalid apartment, but is still pressing on, despite his faculties sometimes being hamstringed by various medications (seems like he is taking more than before). After seven long years, we find that the Dark Horse CD is nearing completion. Being the perfectionist he is, Dan is taking an extra long time in postproduction, and his fellow band members are getting a little antsy. No real conclusions here, but another very intimate, uncensored glimpse into one man's life, duct taped slippers and all. At the very least, no one can say he did try to follow his dreams. Can we say the same about ourselves?

As an antidote for the bloated, manufactured rock stars of the MTVgeneration, these films are packed with stranger-than-fiction human comedy and down toearth realism. Driver 23 and The Atlas Moth document seven years in the life of DanCleveland, a Minneapolis-based rock guitarist/deliveryman and his band, Dark Horse. Inspite of (or because of) a complex obsessive compulsive disorder, Dan is driven by anexistential need to simply accomplish. An intense optimist, he meets all obstacles to hismusical ambitions with uncanny determination, amazing perseverance, and strange"inventions" which visualize frustrations and make tangible the workings of his mind.Winner of 9 National/International Film Awards.

Weather Woman Returns Review

Weather Woman Returns
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Normally, sequels in name only serve to promote a movie that might otherwise have weak acting, production values, plot, etc. However, Weather Woman Returns proves to be the exception to the rule.
Here's the deal. This is a DIFFERENT Keiko Nakadai whose panty-flashing gains her fame. Where the original Keiko was a rough diamond vulgarly flaunting sex, this Keiko is a university student barely in her twenties. When her father, the director of Higashiyama-TV, dies of a heart attack, Keiko drops out of school to take over the financially rickety station in the village of Yamanaka. She believes in making their own productions instead of buying programs from Tokyo. The station motto behind her desk reads, "Higashiyama-TV, Hand-Made Television." On a similar note, the concept of a local station trying to gain viewers with their own programs is also reminiscent of the cult film UHF.
Of her staff, Saito, her father's right hand, supports her and admires her tenacity. Yoshikawa insists that buying expensive programs from Tokyo would add to their near-zero ratings. Then there's Morimoto, a dopey-looking, non-committal, slow-talking stoner-type who is supportive of Keiko, though.
Keiko's nemesis is the arrogant Megumi Hayashibara, the sexually insatiable owner of the rival Nishiyama-TV, now called Trendy TV, and a major creditor of H-TV. She spitefully sabotages Keiko's Fantastic Comedy Live special and ends up hating her outright. She treats everyone, even her right-hand man Sakaguchi, callously. Don't worry--Megumi gets her just desserts at the end, and how!
Keiko and Megumi's differing personalities can be seen throughout the movie. H-TV is a bit cramped, with small cubicles, but its humble and modest. Trendy-TV is a decadent, garish, overblown palace. Keiko is dressed in tasteful clothes, and as for Megumi, she has some outfits that could get her sentenced to ten years by the fashion police. Keiko relaxes in natural hot springs to recharge her batteries, finding pleasure in the warm water, the weather, and the moon. Megumi lounges in a bubble bath, finding pleasure in herself. Finally, Nishiyama means "West Mountain," while Higashiyama means "East Mountain." So, it's west versus east.
Language notes: the lame and tacky comedy troupe sent by Megumi to upstage Keiko. Although the subtitles refer to the troupe as Wanko Jerk... and the Meatb-----s, the actual words said are "Asokake Jijii to Shikko Jikko." "Asokake Jijii" means "Sweaty Old Man", "to" means "and", and Shikko means "to urinate." "Jikko" seems to be a nonsense companion word, like "consequences, schmonsequences." And on Murakami and His Nonsense Nines, the group actually requested by Keiko, Nonsense Nines is translated from "tondemonines," which is a play on the Japanese word "tondemonai," meaning terrible, unfortunate, etc. So, tondemonai, tondemoNINES, get it? Also, when one of the Wanko troupe does cheesy impressions with a towel, he sings, "Taoru de asobo!" It means "Let's play with the towel." The subtitles read "Man with a towel." It might just be me, but isn't the original better than the subtitled translation?
Weather Woman Returns tops its predecessor in that the heroine, played by Misa Aika, is thoroughly likeable, polite, genuine, willing to accept responsibility for her mistakes and learn from them--the kind of girl you'd be proud to invite home to meet your parents. As she says, "Wouldn't it be nice to have a heart as clear as the sky?" A good story, with a gaggle of oddball supporting characters. 4.25 out of 5, rounded to 4.

The Plutonium Circus (1995) Review

The Plutonium Circus (1995)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's a tragedy that I've lived in Amarillo for 5 years and have only now seen this movie. Ratliff manages to mix the absurdly humorous and frightening aspects of this town and the nuclear bomb disassembly/assembly facility housed here, and gives a great forum to some of the most interesting people in this town. I did laugh through a lot of it but I have to admit that I was nervously looking over my shoulder to the North-East when I did it.
In the end, it's a great tribute to Mr. Ratliff, this movie, and the ever entertaining Amarillo population that the most well known nutcase in the panhandle of Texas comes out as the most intelligent and well spoken "character" in Plutonium Circus.

"I grew up thinking the world was always about to end. That's a pretty common belief in the Texas Panhandle..."It's the final decade of the millennium.World peace has broken out. And an estimated 150,000 pounds of weapons-grade plutonium are out of a job and looking for a place to stay.Welcome to "The Plutonium Circus," where sideshow freaks, fire-eating politicians, and a sizeable cadre of clowns gather under a Texas big top to celebrate the town's newest residents: thousands of dismantled nuclear warheads, capable of destroying the world hundreds of times over (and with no place to go for the next 24,000 years). But check your p.c. hysteria and conspiracy theories at the door... all you'll need at this circus is a sense of humor and a healthy appreciation of all the mutations of human behavior that are the true fallout of the nuclear age.Featuring: Stanley Marsh 3, Kevin Knapp, Charles Johnson III, Buck Ramsey, Bill O'Brien, Bruce Friedrich, Mavis Beslile, Father Darrel Birkenfeld, and Kerry CampbellGeorge Ratliff: Director, Producer, Editor & ArchivistJudd Metni: Director of Photography & Co-ProducerCharles Burmeister: Sound Operator & Creative ConsultantMarina Burini: Production Manager & First A.C.Documentary, 73 minutes

Fema City Review

Fema City
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Jamin Griffiths' insightful and personal exploration of the aftermath of 2004's devastating (and now virtually overlooked) Hurricane Charley is a tragic tale of real life woe - and a must-see. Clearly a caring director, Griffiths has masterfully gained the confidence of a group of people dealt a horrific blow - and who are now caught in a vicious cycle from which it seems nearly impossible to escape. If even a fraction of young director Griffiths' compassion were matched by equal parts common sense on the government's part, the subjects of his documentary might be in a very different place. This is a cautionary tale of how half-measures and half-hearted assistance can result in half-baked solutions - and broken lives.

Hide and Go Shriek Review

Hide and Go Shriek

This is one of those movies that a friend and I picked up becuase there was nothing else we hadn't seen, and surprisingly ended up being an extremely entertaining bit of horror! It adds a slightly original twist by taking place in a multi-floored furniture store. The kids play hide and seek, and somewhere amongst the dark displays, and mannequins, a killer stalks them. The film ratchets the suspense up a notch till it builds to an admittedly bizarre conclusion. Highly recommended!

Whole of the Moon (1998) Review

Whole of the Moon (1998)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I chanced upon this obscure New Zealand film while flipping channels on TV one day and it grabbed my attention at once. I combed the internet until I found a copy of it to own. It is a 'family film' about kids with cancer and predictably very dramatic, certainly not the sort of genre I'd normally enjoy. But this movie utterly makes me weep. It's one of the most powerful and moving films I've ever seen. It's a heart-wrenching portrayal of incredible friendship and I have yet to see its equal. The two young stars, Toby Fisher and Nikki Si'Ulepa, carry this film with masterful insight beyond their years. "The Whole of the Moon" deserves much more acclaim and recognition than it has received. If you have not seen this film, do--it's overwhelmingly worth it.

Essentially a compilation of trailers for many, but not all, of Elvis' post-Army films with a line or two of narration here and there. I love the period trailers, and the narration is inobtrusive if not enlightening. The sound and visual quality are good, but the color ranges from good to poor. The trailers are presented almost, but not completely, in chronological order.
