Barney's Christmas Star Review

Barney's Christmas Star
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As usual, the show opens inside of Barney's Playhouse. There are four children: one African-American, one Asian and two Caucasian. There are two boys and two girls.
This show starts with Barney discussing the holidays and they show and sing about each of three tables: one with the nativity scene for Christmas, one for Hanukkah, and one for Kwanzaa. This is where all references to the religious aspect of the holidays and Christmas end. Then Barney sings a generic song "I love the holidays". A girl enters and announces it is snowing and they all go outside to play, they sing songs about winter and snow, and build a snowman.
The girl invites everyone to help decorate a big Christmas tree in a public park that her great-great grandfather planted many years ago. They are off to help out and sing "O Christmas Tree". Soon they realize the star for the top of the tree is missing. Grandma sends Barney and the children back to her house to look for it in the attic.
Once in the attic, Grandfather gives them free reign to search for the missing star. They sing songs and talk about what they find and sing non-religious Christmas songs. Classic toys such as Raggedy Ann, drummer boys (soldiers), and teddy bears are found with glee. Barney finds a copy of a picture book version of "The Night Before Christmas" and reads it aloud while images of Santa on his sleigh are shown. Santa comes down the chimney and eats cookies that have been left for him while two children watch.
BJ and Baby Bop appear out of nowhere and eventually they find the star. They take it to the park, sing a new song about the star to the tune of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" and Barney helps put the star on top of the tree since none of the adults can reach it, even with a ladder. (Typical of Barney shows, Barney is more of an authority figure and more capable than the human adults, and "saves the day".)
Overall this show is very much centered on presents and decorations such as the Christmas tree. One scene asks what is best about the holidays and the boy says "wrapping presents, giving presents and opening presents". Christians may not like that the central focus of this Christmas show is not religious despite the title containing the word "Christmas".
Overall this is typical Barney fare: inclusion of many ethnicities, trying to be fair by showing multiple celebrations of various peoples, and making the main focus something that is not secular. The songs are new and old classics. It is very much like the TV shows in content and quality.
If your child loves the Barney TV shows then s/he will love this show. As for how much the adult finds this entertaining, it would be equal to how much the adult likes the television show. The best part of this show is that it is the typical innocence, song and dance we expect from the Barney programs, which I feel makes it a good choice for young children, or at least better than most programming that is out there for children! It is what it is: a Barney show!!

Barney: The Land Of Make Believe (2005) Review

Barney: The Land Of Make Believe (2005)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This may very well be the best Barney movie ever!
As a granddad, I've seen quite a lot of the big purple dinosaur's videos, although I've never really considered myself an avid fan. However, if "The Land of Make Believe" is a sign of things to come, I'll look forward to more. My grandchildren love this video!
In "Land of Make Believe" Barney and his cohorts are on a quest that is fast moving and very colorful, with a delightfully engaging set of "Make Believe" characters (a giant, mermaid, magician, etc.) and some nifty special effects. The kids accompanying Barney and his crew are cute without being saccharine and there is an assortment of catchy songs and dances performed by all the characters. A few of the tunes are Barney classics, but others are new and very clever. Don't be surprised if you hear your little one suddenly start singing a song or two from this video (not surprisingly, I just noticed that Amazon also has the soundtrack CD available).
Of course, the adventures of Barney and his dinosaur friends, BJ and Baby Bop, are targeted to the very young, but "Land of Make Believe" is the first Barney video I can recall that includes some wry humor that adults can appreciate.
Something tells me I'll be watching "Land of Make Believe" for some time to come (you know how little ones want to watch their favorite shows over and over and over). In just a few days, "Land of Make Believe" has become a mainstay in our household. I am finally beginning to understand why Public Television has long considered Barney & Friends to be positive programming for tots. Enjoy!
NOTE: I also discovered that the local "TOYS R US" already has it for sale...but if you can wait a few days, the prices at Amazon are better!

We didn't like the video, kids being wild and acting like Rock Stars was not the kind of video we were looking for...creative play is one thing, hedonism is not a value I want to teach my children.

Barney - Good Clean Fun/Oh Brother She's My Sister (1998)
Average Reviews:

I feel that I'm qualified to comment on "Barney's Good,Clean Fun" video due to the fact that it got stuck in my VCR and I watched it at least 25 times in a row. That didn't bother my 2 1/2 year old however, he requested it daily anyway. I bought it for the segment on brushing your teeth("and having so much fun", as Barney sings) because getting my son to brush his was anything BUT fun. Miraculously, it worked. He now ASKS for his toothbrush. Do you need help getting your child to clean up after himself, take a bath or cover a sneeze? Never underestimate the power of a purple dinosaur!

When Baby Bop and BJ get mad and vow never to speak to each other again, it's up to Barney and the kids to teach them the importance of friendship between brothers and sisters.Join Barney and the twins Ashley and Alissa as they try to brighten the mood with singing, dancing and sharing what they like best about each other.Just as BJ and Baby Bop begin playing tug-of-war with a book they both want to read, author Tomie dePaula arrives to read his book, "The Baby Sister," and explains why family is so important. He also teaches them that brothers and sisters can be more than just members of the same family...they can be friends for life.

Barney: Good Day Good Night (1992) Review

Barney: Good Day Good Night (1992)
Average Reviews:

My 4 year old loved this video for it showed her many things which she couldn't see herself, especially the part on "night-time". The songs are great, some are new, others are Barney classics, but its an eye-opener on what happens during the night when most kids are fast asleep. It is one of my daughter's favorties, and even my 1 year old sits glued to the TV when its playing. I highly recommend it, for it teaches them alot about what they should do before they go to bed, about constellations, about flowers and about the sounds of day and night.

Barney - Dino-Mite Birthday (2010) Review

Barney - Dino-Mite Birthday (2010)
Average Reviews:

BEFORE YOU READ THIS: Make sure you know, I'm a huge fan of Barney (as it says below in a way).
Thinking that this could be a bit of a reuinion, I anticipated for this since it was announced (as I did for Barney's 20th Anniversary in general). However, when HIT Entertainment had the Be A Star sweepstakes, things began to turn downhill. What I mean is, for us older Barney fans, we're screwed. The contest only allows 24 month-6 year olds enter. But the main topic here is this video, so I'll get on that.
Basicly, the kids are throwing Barney a surprise birthday party, with everything around nearly purple (even purple popcorn o_0). The thing that really annoys me is that they have to put a older clip from seasons 9 (which I didn't like too much anyway)-11 for nearly every song. It'd make sense if it was a Barney Songs video, but since it's not, it feels out of place. I don't blame Barney himself for this, instead on the ignorant people at HIT Entertainment. A message to them: "There are people who like Barney too (past the age range that is), like Fraggle Rock." Overall, I wouldn't recommend this and you should stick to Barney's Birthday for a video celebrating the purple one's special day. Hopefully, a boxset of Season 1 (and later 2 and 3) comes out someday.

Barney's Musical Scrapbook Review

Barney's Musical Scrapbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My mother got this for my 3 year old daughter and she absolutely loves it. Basically, Barney goes through his scrapbook reminscising about some of fun times he's had. Then they show older episodes of the show (my guess from the mid to late 90's). If your kids like Barney, they will probably enjoy this DVD.
One proviso: I gave it 5 stars because my daughter enjoys it, not because *I* enjoy it. This is definitely not stuff for adults (well, not for the non-drooling segment of the adult population anyway.) If you're over 7 years old this will definitely fry the rest of your functioning brain cells if you watch it too much.
As for bonus features, there are none, except for some trailers for upcoming children's DVDs like The Wiggles and Kipper. It's kind of nice that they are in the bonus section so you don't have to watch them if you don't want to.
All in all, I recommend this for kids who are Barney fans.

Barney Goes to School (1992) Review

Barney Goes to School (1992)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I taught pre-school for over 10 years. My Barney Goes to School tape was replaced 3 times. When my daughter was born, I had to go to e-bay to find another one. Before she was three, she knew the days of the week (and that there were 7) what colors mixed together made other colors, shapes ect. She began to read at 4, and now at 6 reads on a 4th grade level. I have to give a lot of credit to Barney for her love of learning. Now, my younget is a big Barney fan. I will be getting this tape for her also. We have had a lot of Barney tapes, but this one is by far the best!
Thanks, Barney, for all the fun!
Dixie

Barney - Barney's Super Singing Circus (2000) Review

Barney - Barney's Super Singing Circus (2000)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We have over 30 Disney videos and other cartoon videos, but this is the only one she cares for. I was stunned when I saw her sit through the whole movie at 2 1/2. She's a very active child and nothing would keep her still. At the end of the tape, she starts wining "Barney." I couldn't believe I was finding myself rewinding and playing this tape six times a day. It would be more if I hadn't told her that Barney was going to sleep.
The funniest thing is that I wondered why children love him so much, still do...back then I had no children...now my daughter is crazy about him and I'm finding myself buying Barney videos to keep her entertained and let mommy relax a little.

Barney: It's Time for Counting (1992) Review

Barney: It's Time for Counting (1992)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a cute video. My son is a little young for it to hold his attention the whole way through, but he enjoys the singing and dancing a lot.
It should be said that the title and packaging are a bit misleading. It's not really about counting. Rather, there's an actual storyline involving a Mary Poppins type character named Stella losing her clock numbers in her travels. Barney and his pals help search for them, ending up at the library. There, they read books and act them out as characters in the stories. It's much more a plug for reading than for math, but it is fun.
I was pleasantly surprised at my son's enjoyment of the video. He likes the Spanish track, too. Fine for the little ones in the house.
