Nobody's Daughter - Rare Hungarian Film Review

Nobody's Daughter - Rare Hungarian Film
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
An orphaned girl of approximately 8 years of age, is horribly abused by various foster parents. With the first family, all the children are clothed but her, and while the other children play, she is made to do chores and if the other kids do something wrong, of course they blame it on her and she is beaten. Mind you, the movie will make you, as it did me, want to reach through the screen and choke the foster parents to death. They are at best Cruel to her until finally she runs away only to end up in an orphanage where yet again, abusive parents carry her to their home. The girl is totally sweet, one any loving family would want. One who truly is innocent, but being raised in households where she is constantly met with violence. The ending to the movie is even more heartbreaking, and of course I wont reveal the ending to you, you'll need to see the movie first. But its her words in the end that will solidly bring anyone with a heart to tears. I gave the movie 5 stars for one reason only, so that anyone who has a kind heart would want to watch the movie and be inspired to adopt a boy or girl themselves to keep the child from perhaps living the life this sad little girl lead in the movie.

The Wiggles - Yummy Yummy Review

The Wiggles - Yummy Yummy
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Santa" brought the Wiggles "Wiggle Time" video to our house and my two daughters (ages 2 1/2 and 5 years of age) LOVED it, as did all of their friends. I particularly liked that the girls were up dancing and actually getting some exercise during the entire video, unlike most videos where kids are inclined to just sit and watch. For that reason I immediately ordered the "Yummmy Yummy" video.
The girls do love this one but my primary reason for ordering it . . . the "stand-up, dance and move" rather than "sit and stare" factor . . . isn't nearly as good in this one. There is much more down-time (as in 'sit down') on this one.
Still, THEY do enjoy it. If I were choosing between this or Wiggle Time as a parent, I'd recommend that you choose "Wiggle Time" in a heart beat for your kids, for gifts, etc.
Also, I do agree that the puppets are kind of creepy and, while they don't bother my children, they don't really keep their attention either.
They definitely love the upbeat tunes contained on this video though, every one of them.

I've gotten the other Sing Along Videos in Spanish and this is by far the best one. It is simply awesome! Weather you get it for youngsters that are learning Spanish as a second language or those that already master Spanish...it is simply the best.
ADVISORY NOTE: IF YOU HAVE YOUNG CHILDREN UNDER 3 OR 4 BE AWARE THAT THERE IS A PIRATE SONG WITH THE VIDEO THAT MAY BE A BIT SCARY TO SOME CHILDREN.
BE AWARE AND PREVIEW WITHOUT THEM IF POSSIBLE. MY SON WHEN HE WAS 2 WAS VERY SCARED WHEN HE WATCHED THAT PARTICULAR SONG VIDEO BUT NOW
THAT HE IS 3-1/2 HE LOVES THE ENTIRE VIDEO. MY FIRST-BORN SON NEVER HAD A PROBLEM AT ANY AGE AND NEITHER DID MY DAUGHTER. EVERY CHILD
IS DIFFERENT! ENJOY!!! LAUGH AND SING AND DANCE WITH YOUR CHILDREN; THEY WILL REMEMBER FOR A LIFETIME!!!

Casper (1995) Review

Casper (1995)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Casper is a fun children's film, that can be watched as a family and keep everyone entertained. Unlike many movies concerning ghosts, there is no reason to worry that this movie will upset or scare even the most sensitive children. Casper is sweet and endearing, and even the vicious ghosts in this film are far from threatening as they quickly bring a smile to your face and alleviate any tension with humor.
However, Casper does not rely souly on laughter, and has a strong plot to back it up. It raises spiritual questions that make you think, and has very heartfelt moments of intense emotion. You grow to care about the characters as we watch Casper and Kat in their simultaneous search for friendship, and Dr. Harvey in his quest to resolve his own unfinished business and finally get some closure.
Malachi Pearson does an outstanding job as the voice of Casper, and portrays all of his emotions very convincingly. You can also look forward to a great performance from Bill Pullman, and will love hating the bumbling villains portrayed by Cathy Moriarty and Eric Idle. Unfortunately, there are times where Christina Ricci seems to have some difficulty filling her role as Kat, and occasionally makes scenes awkward and unconvincing.
The score for this film is beautiful, and adds a great deal to the spirit and mood of the movie.
There is some light use of profanity that I don't find necessary or appropriate for a family film aimed largely at children, but it can be easily overlooked.

Harriet the Spy (1996) Review

Harriet the Spy (1996)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Harriet M. Welsch (Michelle Trachtenberg) is an 11-year-old-spy who dreams of being a writer. She explains her obsession with writing by saying: "I want to remember everything, I want to know everything."
In her PRIVATE notebook, she writes down her secret thoughts. Sometimes her comments are all too honest and not that nice. Harriet doesn't yet understand the power of words, but soon she learns, when all her friends become her worst enemies.
Rosie O'Donnell plays the perfect nanny. Her advice to Harriet is that while she might want to know everything, it won't do her a bit of good unless she uses her knowledge to put beauty into the world.
Harriet goes through a great learning experience where she finally realizes she should participate more in life and learns to let go of her writing obsession in order to embrace life. After all, true friends are what makes life wonderful and worth living.
This is a funky, modern story that teaches a wonderful lesson. It is about learning to forgive and being vulnerable enough to be able to say you are sorry.
A great lesson for all ages!

Barney's Christmas Star Review

Barney's Christmas Star
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As usual, the show opens inside of Barney's Playhouse. There are four children: one African-American, one Asian and two Caucasian. There are two boys and two girls.
This show starts with Barney discussing the holidays and they show and sing about each of three tables: one with the nativity scene for Christmas, one for Hanukkah, and one for Kwanzaa. This is where all references to the religious aspect of the holidays and Christmas end. Then Barney sings a generic song "I love the holidays". A girl enters and announces it is snowing and they all go outside to play, they sing songs about winter and snow, and build a snowman.
The girl invites everyone to help decorate a big Christmas tree in a public park that her great-great grandfather planted many years ago. They are off to help out and sing "O Christmas Tree". Soon they realize the star for the top of the tree is missing. Grandma sends Barney and the children back to her house to look for it in the attic.
Once in the attic, Grandfather gives them free reign to search for the missing star. They sing songs and talk about what they find and sing non-religious Christmas songs. Classic toys such as Raggedy Ann, drummer boys (soldiers), and teddy bears are found with glee. Barney finds a copy of a picture book version of "The Night Before Christmas" and reads it aloud while images of Santa on his sleigh are shown. Santa comes down the chimney and eats cookies that have been left for him while two children watch.
BJ and Baby Bop appear out of nowhere and eventually they find the star. They take it to the park, sing a new song about the star to the tune of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" and Barney helps put the star on top of the tree since none of the adults can reach it, even with a ladder. (Typical of Barney shows, Barney is more of an authority figure and more capable than the human adults, and "saves the day".)
Overall this show is very much centered on presents and decorations such as the Christmas tree. One scene asks what is best about the holidays and the boy says "wrapping presents, giving presents and opening presents". Christians may not like that the central focus of this Christmas show is not religious despite the title containing the word "Christmas".
Overall this is typical Barney fare: inclusion of many ethnicities, trying to be fair by showing multiple celebrations of various peoples, and making the main focus something that is not secular. The songs are new and old classics. It is very much like the TV shows in content and quality.
If your child loves the Barney TV shows then s/he will love this show. As for how much the adult finds this entertaining, it would be equal to how much the adult likes the television show. The best part of this show is that it is the typical innocence, song and dance we expect from the Barney programs, which I feel makes it a good choice for young children, or at least better than most programming that is out there for children! It is what it is: a Barney show!!

Pufnstuf (1970) Review

Pufnstuf (1970)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I saw a bootleg letterboxed copy of this about seven or eight years ago at a friend's house up in Northern California, and I was astonished. All this is, really, is a 90-minute "H.R. Pufnstuf" episode, but it's one of the best ones ever conceived. In keeping with the times (and, quite possibly, the film's "real" potential audience) there are quickly intercut visual effects that look like they were stolen from the "Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite" section of "2001" throughout. It's a little thin plotwise (who watches this stuff for plot, anyway?), but there are plenty of musical numbers to keep the viewer entertained and amused. It's worth the price of admission alone to see Mama Cass Eliot (she plays Witchiepoo's friend Witch Hazel - yuk yuk) talking on the telephone while sitting in a bathtub full of food! Sadly, there's no "See You Next Week!" sign-off at the end of the movie, which may disappoint some. That's just a small quibble, though. Fans of Sid & Marty Krofft's work shouldn't miss out on this, and it also deserves shelf space in the collection of any fan of camp or Psychotronic stuff. Incredible.

Paulie (1998) Review

Paulie (1998)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I sat at my computer as my son watched Paulie, which I thought was going to be a silly.; stupid movie(ie amazon has it paired up with mouse hunt as a combo deal) . At first it did seem like a typical goofy talking animal thing...but at some oint I found myself glued to the piece...this is a movie that can be kind of dumb, but also dares to be smart, sensitive entertainment. There are great contributions throughout, funny lines, and a sentimental moment or two. The tone of the movie is much more reverant and lovely than I thought it would be.
Again, if it wasn't for my son, these movies would never exist is my psyche....this is a nice little movie...let's hear it for nice.

This one seems extra special. Sure it is still only 24 minutes long, but the stories are fabulous! Rolie and Billie play round and square games and even change bodies. There is a new guy called Wheelie with one wheel. He is older and really cool. He takes Olie and Zowie to the park to play. What a park! Full of fun roller skating and swings. They have a blast with Wheelie! This video teaches that differences are good in others and to learn to walk in each others shoes to appreciate those differences. I like the message! And this video stands out with it's extra special animation and activities. A must have!

Miss Spider's Sunny Patch Kids (Follow Along Edition) (2003) Review

Miss Spider's Sunny Patch Kids (Follow Along Edition) (2003)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We've been playing this DVD for my daughter since she was about 8 months old and she enjoys the colors!!
They're just so vivid that it caught her attention early on and she hasn't let go. Now, at 16 months, she still enjoys watching it while she eats on her high chair and it's the only way to keep her still for a while.
We bought this DVD with a package containing Stellaluna at Costco, and a freebie for the High Five musical group, but nothing has caught my daughter's attention more than this DVD. Growing up with the Disney movies myself, I tried to get her into those movies but they're simply boring for her (of course, she's too little ;-)
Of course, I've enjoyed it, too :-) and always play it for visitors, children and adults, and they always get hooked.
My wife is always laughing at us because my little one and I just get into the movie and don't pay attention to anything else, that's how good it is!!
Two thumbs up!

There Goes a Spaceship (1994) Review

There Goes a Spaceship (1994)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
might have been a better title. We have 2 others in this series, Fire Truck and Bulldozer, and they are worn thin from my kids' constant watching of them. This one is different, though-- it is mostly about Dave and Becky goofily doing astronaut training stuff, and then dreaming that they are lost on a faraway planet (that looks an awful lot like the California desert) with no way home. This is interesting to a point, but it's not the same sort of truck-o-licious excitement that makes your toddler jump up and down and scream "TUCK!!! TUCK!!!" like they will for the others in this series. And I could have definitely done without the discussion of how astronauts go to the bathroom in their space suits-- as if little boys need any encouragement to go on a potty talk binge. I think this video provides an interesting look into how astronauts train, and some info about what it's like to ride in a space shuttle, but there's nothing learned about space itself (which my kids and I were hoping for) and it's not the same sort of gee-whiz experience as the other, more vehicle-filled titles in the series.

Winnie the Pooh: Sing a Song With Tigger (1999) Review

Winnie the Pooh: Sing a Song With Tigger (1999)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While my kids may be a bit young for this video, the oldest (just under 3) appreciates the sing-along far better than she tolerates the Winnie the Pooh cartoons; for some reason she can't make it through a half-hour of the show while she can manage this video. She is especially drawn to the Scrapbook song, which is current Disney channel "filler" between "Bear" and the other shows. Several of the songs are also recognizable from the Tigger movie, which she liked. In all, I think this video is a good way to introduce younger children to Pooh and his friends without losing too much interest. it also makes for interesting times when she expects her parents to read the lyrics to her off the screen; that is probably the real treat here is to hear an adult actually try to keep pace with the show.

VeggieTales - Jonah Sing-Along Songs and More Review

VeggieTales - Jonah Sing-Along Songs and More
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I chose to buy this video because I can't wait to take my girls to see the movie, "Jonah - a VeggieTales Movie," which opens in theaters on October 4th, 2002!! I wanted to catch a glimpse of what was to come, for myself, but more importantly, for my two daughters, whom I have never taken into a movie theater. (I think Disney movies are too scary and sad, but anywhooo...) I also thought it would be great to know some of the new Veggie songs *before* seeing the movie, to help my girls feel more comfortable with the newness of the whole theater experience.
As for the new songs, I have to say the ones chosen for this video are *AWESOME*! My kids crack up over the "Billy Jo McGuffrey" tune! During the song, the video footage shows some real-life kids, acting out the silly words on a school stage. It's really cute, and very funny! I have recently ordered the cd, so we can sing this in the car! The "Belly of a Whale" song is by far, my favorite, maybe because the footage is similar to a music video, in that the "real" group is seen performing, in between scenes from the movie. A re-mix of the older, "The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything" is positively hilarious! The Veggie pirates are seen on the deck of a pirate ship, just hanging around in their rock-a-loungers. I just about choked on my diet Coke watching that for the first time...so a warning to you diet Coke drinkers! :)
The only drawback I can think of, to be fair, is that the video is too short for my liking. I WANT too much of a GOOD thing!! :) Anyway, we have watched it several times in a row, just to get our fill of the Veggies (and it never gets boring.) Overall, this video is an *AWESOME* 30 minute preview of what's to come in the "Jonah" movie! If you are a Veggie fan...you really ought to get this one!! And if you are new to the Veggies, this is a great intro to their music, which you probably should become familiar with, anyway...as the Veggies are *coming*!!! (to the big screen, that is-) :)
