There Goes a Spaceship (1994) Review

There Goes a Spaceship (1994)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
might have been a better title. We have 2 others in this series, Fire Truck and Bulldozer, and they are worn thin from my kids' constant watching of them. This one is different, though-- it is mostly about Dave and Becky goofily doing astronaut training stuff, and then dreaming that they are lost on a faraway planet (that looks an awful lot like the California desert) with no way home. This is interesting to a point, but it's not the same sort of truck-o-licious excitement that makes your toddler jump up and down and scream "TUCK!!! TUCK!!!" like they will for the others in this series. And I could have definitely done without the discussion of how astronauts go to the bathroom in their space suits-- as if little boys need any encouragement to go on a potty talk binge. I think this video provides an interesting look into how astronauts train, and some info about what it's like to ride in a space shuttle, but there's nothing learned about space itself (which my kids and I were hoping for) and it's not the same sort of gee-whiz experience as the other, more vehicle-filled titles in the series.

Winnie the Pooh: Sing a Song With Tigger (1999) Review

Winnie the Pooh: Sing a Song With Tigger (1999)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While my kids may be a bit young for this video, the oldest (just under 3) appreciates the sing-along far better than she tolerates the Winnie the Pooh cartoons; for some reason she can't make it through a half-hour of the show while she can manage this video. She is especially drawn to the Scrapbook song, which is current Disney channel "filler" between "Bear" and the other shows. Several of the songs are also recognizable from the Tigger movie, which she liked. In all, I think this video is a good way to introduce younger children to Pooh and his friends without losing too much interest. it also makes for interesting times when she expects her parents to read the lyrics to her off the screen; that is probably the real treat here is to hear an adult actually try to keep pace with the show.

Kitten Party Holiday Review

Kitten Party Holiday
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the same DVD as the other Kitten Party--just a different package for the holidays. I got both and then realized it! But I gave one as a gift, so AOK. The DVD is just about the cutest thing I have ever seen. My kids love it and we watch it often, sometimes on mute while we do other things in the room. The dozens of kittens are so adorable. The program is not a movie really, it's a series of chapters, each with a different sort of loose story. It's fun and my kids follow along and really like certain moments that they want to see over and over again. For $6.99 you get endless entertainment of little kittens running around! A bargain, if you ask me.

Pingu: Pingu's South Pole Adventures (2010) Review

Pingu: Pingu's South Pole Adventures (2010)
Average Reviews:

I was excited to find the Pingu DVDs, including this one, on Amazon. My sons adore Pingu and were bummed every time we used up all our free Netflix minutes watching Meet Pingu and Pingu on Thin Ice over and over again. This collection is still good, stories are still funny, characters and animation fun to watch and my 3 and 5 year boys love it. But it somehow lacks the freshness of the first two collections. If my boys have a choice between this and Pingu on Thin Ice, [which I also got on Amazon] they pick On Thin Ice first every time. Still a good buy, but if you can only get one...I would get the other. Still waiting to find a copy of Meet Pingu I can pick up!

Tom and Jerry - Paws for a Holiday (2003) Review

Tom and Jerry - Paws for a Holiday (2003)
Average Reviews:

This is flat-out false advertising on part of the producers of this DVD. It has NOTHING to do with Christmas or the holiday season at all, despite the cover graphics showing Christmas tree lights, holly, etc. Some idiot who obviously feels that a few cartoons which partly include skating or snow in them makes this a "Christmas" cartoon ought to be fired. Most of the cartoons on the DVD don't even have that.
I got ripped off purchasing this DVD believing what the cover represented would be the content of the material. Don't make the same mistake and avoid this DVD or video!!

The Book of Pooh - Stories From the Heart (2001) Review

The Book of Pooh - Stories From the Heart (2001)
Average Reviews:

My daughter is 14 months old, and if any of you have a child at that age you understand how hard it is to hold their attention for more than two minutes. Well, the Book of Pooh does it for my daughter. We faithfully watch The Book of Pooh every day on Playhouse Disney (their morning lineup on the Disney channel), and she absolutely loves it. She loves the songs, and the characters, even though they are puppets they look so life like,(Pooh, Tigger, Rabbit, Pigglet, Owl, & Kessie the blue bird) and it's wonderful how they put those characters in a computer generated background. The colors are bright and eye-catching, and best of all I even I like this show. (If I can't stand to watch it then why make my daughter watch it????) I often find myself humming the closing song all the time! The Book of Pooh has good stories that teach children the right things, in a subtle way! I definitely recommend the Book of Pooh for all ages, it will definitely get your attention!

The Wizard of Oz (Two-Disc Special Edition) (1939) Review

The Wizard of Oz (Two-Disc Special Edition) (1939)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Like most baby boomers, I've watched this film dozens of times in the past on broadcast TV, then VHS tape, then LaserDisc ... but I had never actually SEEN "The Wizard of Oz" until this newly restored DVD came out. It's an amazing transfer. The sepia-tone Kansas sequences are startlingly sharp and clear, and the Technicolored world "Over the Rainbow" is truly dazzling. I found myself fascinated by details I had never noticed before: the glittering corn stalks in the Scarecrow's field; the mirror-like floors of the Emerald City; the polished buttons on the guardsmen's uniforms. Incredibly, even the individual grains of red sand in the Witch's hourglass stood out and glistened! All these minor-but-sumptuous visual details served to heighten the magical spell that the film has always woven, enhancing the performances, the story, and the music.
The DVD extras are a mind-boggling embarrassment of riches. The "Making Of" documentary hosted by the incomparable Angela Lansbury is worth the price of the DVD alone, but there's so much more: an international poster gallery, interviews with cast members, deleted scenes, production stills, radio clips, etc, etc. There's enough material to keep even the most casual viewer fascinated for hours, and a true Oz buff will be occupied for days!
If you only bought a DVD player to watch this one disc, it would well be worth the expense. Treat yourself, and fall in love with this classic film again ... for the first time.

Pete's Dragon (Disney Gold Classic Collection) (1977) Review

Pete's Dragon (Disney Gold Classic Collection) (1977)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Pete's Dragon" (1977) has become a somewhat forgotten Disney movie that was originally inspired by the success of Mary Poppins (45th Anniversary Special Edition) as a live-action/animation musical. The story finally got the green-light in 1975; songs were by Al Kasha and Joel Hirschhorn, and an all-star cast was assembled: singer Helen Reddy in her first film role, Broadway's Jim Dale, Shelley Winters, Red Buttons, Jim Backus, and Mickey Rooney. Sean Marshall, in his first acting job, portrayed the title character of Pete.
Pete is a young orphan who has escaped the abusive family that adopted him: a dirty bunch of hillbillies known as The Gogans (Jeff Conaway, Kenickie from Grease (Rockin' Rydell Edition) [Blu-ray] plays one of The Gogans). They adopted Pete to use him as a slave. Elliott, a large green dragon who can become invisible at will, helps Pete escape, and acts as his friend and protector. Pete ends up in the small village of Passamaquoddy, where he is taken in by kindly Nora (Reddy) and her father Lampie (Rooney). The two own the lighthouse in town, where Nora waits for her boyfriend Paul to return, even though he was lost at sea years before. The Gogans find Pete and attempt to steal him back, with the aid of Doc Terminus (Dale), a medicine showman, and his shill, Hoagy (Buttons). Although fairly predictable, it is a heartwarming story with an excellent cast and music that is light and breezy. Definitely good fare for the young!
Nominated for Best Original Score and Best Original Song ("Candle in the Water"), pleasantly sung by Reddy.
When watching today, the animation looks a little antiquated, as digital animation and the ability to combine live-action with cartoons has obviously improved since 1977. Still, with the limitations of the day, what the Disney team was able to create is still quite impressive. The entire town of Passamaquoddy was built on the Disney backlot, with a functioning lighthouse built above Morro Bay, California. The US Coast Guard had to give permission to Disney to actually light it so as not to confuse real ships in the water. Disney's Golden Oak Ranch in Santa Clarita was also used for a number of outdoor shots.
SPECS:
Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound * Widescreen (1.66:1)--Enhanced for 16x9 TVs. This was the first Disney film recorded in the Dolby Stereo sound system. The clarity and color of the image of the DVD are excellent; sound is good too, but nothing that will really blow your speakers away. Running time of approximately 129 minutes, which is just about 5 minutes short of the original roadshow version.
BONUS FEATURES:
Sneak Peeks: Snow White on Blu-ray, The Prince & The Frog (theatrical), Disney Blu-ray, Hannah Montana the Movie, Up, D23, Earth, and Tinkerbell: The Lost Treasure.
Brazzle Dazzle Effects (25:23): Narrated by Sean Marshall (Pete) who is heard present day, but never seen! Sean takes us on a journey telling the history of live-action/animation in Disney films, beginning the Alice Comedies. Virginia Davis (Alice) recalls pantomiming to invisible animals. "Children love to pretend. I loved to pretend, too." Disney thought that by putting a live girl in an animated setting he could get a leg-up on the competition. Ub Iwerks joined the Disney team early, left, and then returned in the 1940's. Many of the special effect processes that have made Disney film magic possible were a result of his genius. "The Three Caballeros" was a milestone in 1945 in combining color live-action film with animation. Using rear-screen projection and special process-lab effects, Iwerks helped the film accomplish many things never seen before. The real jump came in 1959 with "Ten Who Dared," a film that used the Sodium Vapor Process Screen. Using yellow lights/filters, filmmakers were able to block out backgrounds that made it easier to combine the animation. Without this process, "The Parent Trap" and "Mary Poppins" would never have been possible. Marshall recalls filming "Pete's Dragon" in the summer of 1976. He loved the entire process: special effects, acting, dancing, makeup. "The only thing I didn't like was the fame!" He recalls Red Buttons and Mickey Rooney attempting to upstage each other, and how choreographer Onna White's instruction helped prepare him to be a college pole-vaulter. In this featurette, you will see the original live-action film and learn how it was combined with the animation. Very interesting to watch documentary.
Deleted Storyboard Sequence: "Terminus & Hoagy Hunt Elliott" (2:25)--Nothing really missed here!
Original Song Concept: "Boo Bop BopBop Bop (I Love You Too)" (2:35): Very pop-sounding; almost a little out of place. Not missed from the storyline, it featured both Pete & Elliott.
Original Demo Recordings (all from February 11, 1976):
Brazzle Dazzle Day: Alternate song, first attempt. The song was liked by re-written.
Every Little Piece: Alternate melody. Thought to be too somber, the lyrics were kept, but the melody was rewritten.
The Greatest Star of All: Deleted song for a deleted character. Artist Ken Anderson thought 2 villains were not needed, so both song and character were cut.
Promotional Record:
Pop versions of songs from the movie released on a 7" Vista record are presented here: It's Not Easy, Brazzle Dazzle Day, There's Room For Everyone, Candle on the Water.
Art Galleries: Concept Art, Behind-the-scenes, and publicity galleries. Varying quality, but still very cool to see, especially the behind-the-scenes shots.
Trailers: International & Theatrical Trailers
"About Pete's Dragon": 5 screens with production notes about the movie.
"Disney Family Album" (excerpt, 2:20): About artist Ken Anderson. He describes how he based Elliott on Wallace Beery - large, bumbling, but loveable. He also is seen at the Disney ranch, which he describes as his Laughing Place.
"The Plausible Impossible" (excerpt, 3:36): From the Disneyland TV show, October 31, 1956. Shows the Disney Art of Animation book, with chapter 5 about the Plausible Impossible--using animation to make the unreal look real. Clips from Fantasia shown.
"Lighthouse Keeping" (1956, 6:45): Donald Duck cartoon
Includes a game for the very young, where you must find Elliott.
Overall, a really great DVD with enjoyable extras.

The Tigger Movie 10th Anniversary Edition (2-Disc DVD + Digital Copy) (2000) Review

The Tigger Movie 10th Anniversary Edition (2-Disc DVD + Digital Copy) (2000)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There have been so many Pooh-related feature films, direct-to-video films and television series that it's getting difficult to keep track of them (word is that there is another theatrical feature in the works). To the best of my recollection, "The Tigger Movie" was produced by the television division but was very successful in its theatrical release and was followed up with "Piglet's Big Movie."
This is actually quite a nice film. The amazing thing about these characters is how flexible they are for so many stories. The plot here revolves around Tigger's family background and his search for his "family tree." The animation, apparently done in Japan, is very fluid and suggestive of the earlier films -- and the domestic artists behind it are among the best in the business, including Floyd Norman and Toby Bluth.
John Fiedler, as Piglet, is the one remaining cast member from the original films, with Jim Cummings voicing Pooh and Tigger and none other than John Hurt taking over the narration from Sebastian Cabot.
It sure is nice to see "Songs by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman" in the credits. This was technically their last film for Disney, though its success surely should have resulted in others. My favorite of their songs is "Round My Family Tree," but they all have the delicate charm of their other Pooh songs. They also collaborated with Kenny Loggins on "Your Heart Will Lead You Home," which got a lot of airplay.
The DVD offers a handful of bonus features -- several games, mostly, plus a storybook version read by the great Corey Burton and a digital copy. But it is particularly good to see two short episodes from the Emmy-winning "New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh" series. Each episode relates to the plot of the feature. Wouldn't it be great if the series was packaged season-by-season on DVD? Hmm?

James and the Giant Peach (Special Edition) (1996) Review

James and the Giant Peach (Special Edition) (1996)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Roald Dahl's modern classic tells the story of James, an orphan who is treated cruelly by his aunts, until one day a benevolent stranger gives him some magical crocodile tongues -- and then marvelous things begin to happen! With new friends, James discovers that he is resourceful and loyal. He learns to believe in himself and trust in others.
This terrific story is given the treatment it deserves by director Henry Selick and producer Tim Burton (who also made Nightmare Before Christmas together). Stop-motion, live action and special effects combine to bring this incredible story to life, and the effort is dazzling, even though the work is almost a decade old.
The dvd features are marginal at best. While it's nice to have the option of DTS or Dolby Digital sound, the other features do not merit calling this a special edition. You can hear the dialogue in English, French or Spanish, and subtitling is available in Spanish or for the hearing impaired. There is also a 4-1/2 minute featurette, a trailer and a Randy Newman music video. Still photos are categorized as Concept Art (9), Puppets (9), Behind-the-Scenes (36) or Live Action (18), and they can be seen as thumbprints or enlarged. There are trailers for NBX, Toy Story 2 and Lady and the Tramp 2. Menus are a bit clunky.
Great film. Mediocre DVD edition.

Stitch The Movie (2003) Review

Stitch The Movie (2003)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Many big fans of the original claim that you shouldn't take one step into going near this one.But big Lilo and Stitch fans should definitely give this one a go.And they could turn out suprised, but this is suprisingly great stuff.Sure it's not as good as the first, but as a film in it's own right, everything here is spot on fantastic once again. The new villian,Dr.Hamsterwheel(Hamsterviel! It is Hamsterviel!!)is the greatest and most hilarious character I have seen in the way of animated gerbil like creations(I AM NOT GERBIL-LIKE,I AM HAMSTER-LIKE!).His accent is fanastic. His voice talent,Jeff Bennett,is fantastic. And his one-liners are incredible!Such as 'I AM IRKED!'at the disappointing sight of Experiment 625(also a new and hilarious character),'YOU THINK YOU'RE SO...PHONE BOOK,PHONE BOOK!!!',where he's starts a threat and discovers that Lilo is higher than he is,and finally,'I WASN'T REALLY GONNA CUT YOU IN HALF,IT WAS A JOKE!DIDN'T JUMBA PUT A FUNNY BONE IN YOU?',after Sparky saves Stitch and Lilo calls for help, then he get scared! It's brilliant!
Also many of the cast have stayed in to do just as well if not better,Daveigh Chase is amazing as Lilo once again,Stitch has a new problem finding his 'cousins',and Jumba and Pleakley are much, much funnier in this one!The only two downfalls are that the Elvis music has been cut short to just one song of his,'Slicin' Sand',which ain't his best, but at least Gareth Gates doesn't destroy another classic like last time, and Aloha,E Komo Mai,which you'll hear over the end credits,or before the start of the TV show,is one of the best songs I've heard in ages.So why is it not featured on the Island Favourites CD?Also this film could be a bit longer,I hate seeing Lilo and Stitch end, especially after only an hour or so,but I've heard rumours of a third film coming soon so keep me posted.
The plot of Stitch The Movie is good but doesn't always match up to it's expectations.First off,you only see 2 new experiments,625 and 221,so the rest of the excitement is left solely to the series. But there's all kinds of twists and turns here as a wonderful new adventure unfolds.
Overall Stitch The Movie may not look like much, but it's just as supremely entertaining as the original Lilo and Stitch, hitting all the right notes again, and keeping us all entertained until we found out the truth about the rumoured third movie.
So now I'm gonna stick this back in my DVD player and go make myself a sandwich!

Disney sets a record for bringing out a direct-to-video sequel after the initial film. "Stitch: The Movie" arrives only a year after the enjoyable "Lilo & Stitch" played theaters and reunites the title character (otherwise known as Experiment 626) with his earth-bound family in the warm Hawaiian sun. The story has a nice set-up: since Stitch is Experiment 626, where are the first 625 invented by Dr. Jumba Jookiba? Odds are the island paradise will soon be spaceport central for many more aliens. As with other made-for-video Disney titles, the animation is not as complex or rich. This hurts this sequel even more since the original film had such a unique, pastel beauty. Unfortunately, the other elements of the film are just as flat. Even though most of the original voice cast returns, the entire production lacks the same spirit and charm, and the story's theme is recycled (get ready for more "Ohana means family"). On the plus side, the film starts with an Elvis Presley song ("Slicin' Sand") and is only 64 minutes long. The movie sets up the Disney TV series "The Adventures of Lilo & Stitch". "--Doug Thomas"

Barbie in a Mermaid Tale (2010) Review

Barbie in a Mermaid Tale (2010)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Our three and a half year old daughter wanted to see this movie after seeing a preview on the Nick Jr website. The only other Barbie movie we have watched was the Nutcracker, and while it was a cute movie with beautiful ballet sequences, it had too many scary parts for her. We watched A Mermaid's Tale tonight as a special treat after a particularly traumatic day involving blood testing for allergies. I was pleasantly surprised in this movie. The animation is fantastic, beautiful and lifelike. The characters are sweet. And the story line (you must realize we are talking it's for small children who love Barbie and fantasy) is easy to follow and fun. My daughter loved it. The "scary" parts weren't too scary, some sharks, a few jelly fish, and the mean Queen. And while she is mean, it's nothing like the Queen in Sleeping Beauty that can give very young children nightmares for weeks. The movie's message is that it is okay to be different. We are very particular about what we let our daughter watch. She watches Max and Ruby, the Wonder Pets, The Berenstain Bears, Little Bear, Olivia and occasionally Maggie and the Ferocious Beast. She has seen the Tinkerbell movies, but didn't enjoy the other Disney movies, as the bad guys are always too scary. She doesn't see any network TV or commercials in general. She saw the commercial for this on the Nick Jr website, and only after we had watched it first. My husband and I especially appreciated the fact that there weren't references to things she wouldn't understand, there weren't jokes thrown in for the adults only, and that is was sweet and simple with no violence, no name calling and nothing offensive. I would gladly watch it again with her, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to a parent who was looking for a sweet, fun movie for little girls who love pretend and make-believe and believe it's possible Mermaids are really out there in the ocean somewhere.

Barbie Fairytopia: Mermaidia (2010) Review

Barbie Fairytopia: Mermaidia (2010)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I should have known when I saw this was a follow on from Fairytopia that I would be disappointed. This is the story of Elina, who in the movie Fairytopia saved her country of Fairytopia and gained her wings. In this she is sent an urgent message from the Prince of Mermaidia (who briefly appeared in Fairytopia) who asks for her to help him. The movie is full of the trials and tribulations she goes through for him, along with his girlfriend Nori. I expect it is deliberate they have named the Mermaid heroine after Japanese Edible seaweed but it seems ill-considered.
Anyway - the good things about the movie, it is brightly coloured, and the costumes for the characters are gorgeous, when Elina becomes a mermaid she looks just stunning. There are really nice messages in this - about overcoming jealousy, selflessness, sharing and the power of team work. Some of these messages are laid on with a trowel, but on the other hand it is for young children and I think the message needs to be strong. And lets get real here, the movies aren't aimed at adults. However I thinksome of hte best movies are those that can easily be watched by Adults and children together - and the best Barbie movie (I think) was Princess and the Pauper where I still find it easy to sit down with my kids and watch it. I wish Barbie movies would get back to that sort of good, singing fun.
the things I found difficult is that although there was a strong basic story (getting the immunity berry) the whole thing was quite confusing for my under 5 year olds. There is so much going on that they quickly lost track of what was happening and who was who. There were too many characters and they all seemed to have marketing tie-ins - lots of mer-ferry's, snails, mermaids, turtles, dolphins - the list went on and on. The overall story which seemed to start it all seemed a weak concept from the start. Some of the characters faces were too animated. In the early Barbie movies there still seemed to be a semblance of reality, but the merferries and so on did seem oddly characterised, almost like Japanese Anime. Perhaps it is something children like, but I prefer the traditional animation, certainly the mix of the two was unsettling at times. Lastly, there is a moment when Elina and Nori get marks of courage which look like tatoos - call me conservative, but I don't want my under 5 year old even thinking a tatoo is cool - no matter what form it takes.
There were some genuinely good moments in this film and despite its faults my children have watched it a couple of times, but it doesn't really interest them in the way that the early dancing ones (swan lake for instance or Princess and the Pauper) I really hope the next movie planned is one of these sort.
