Dinosaurs vs. Apes Review

Dinosaurs vs. Apes

I owned both of these documentaries on VHS at one time and I was happy to find them on this DVD. The transfers are straight from VHS but, thats not all that big a deal since most of the footage is from old trailers etc. There is some good rare stuff on here for vintage fans of giant monster movies and an extra documentary is included. I guess for $12.99, 4 hours of fun isn't too bad a deal. I rate this 3 1/2 stars.

Horatio's Drive: America's First Road Trip (2003) Review

Horatio's Drive: America's First Road Trip (2003)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Horatio Nelson Jackson bet a group of men in San Francisco $50 he could drive an automobile coast to coast in three months or less, something which had never been done before.
"You're on," they told him, and the next day Jackson searched for a suitable vehicle. He spent $3,000 on a 1903 Winton Touring Car, hired a mechanic to accompany him on the drive, and three days later left the city by the Golden Gate heading for the Big Apple.
The duet became a trio when Horatio Jackson brought aboard a light-colored, good-natured bulldog named "Bud" in Caldwell, Idaho.
Jackson back-tracked the trails of westward migration. He introduced the dawn of a new age to a soon-to-be-passing way of life.
He encountered a wagon train heading for the last free land in the Great Northwest. He waited for a stage coach to bring him new tires. He had his automobile repaired at blacksmiths shops. He crossed mountain ranges, forded streams, and got the car stuck in buffalo wallows.
Horatio Nelson Jackson and his mechanic, Sewell Crocker, embodied the American ideal that you can accomplish the impossible with pluck, grit, and determination. They managed to cross the continent by automobile in just over two months and thus win the bet.

The story is superbly told by Dayton Duncan and Ken Burns. Jackson's letters home to his beloved wife, Bertha, or "Swipes", as he calls her, are read by the peerless Tom Hanks.
Behind the narration and the telling of the story is a very lively soundtrack which makes viewing the film most enjoyable!
The documentary, "Horatio's Drive," is Americana at its best.
Don't miss it!

Horatio's Drive recounts the simultaneously inspirational and hilarious saga of Horatio Nelson Jackson, an eccentric Vermont doctor, who in 1903 - on a visionary whim and a 50-dollar bet - became the first person to drive an automobile across the continent, heralding the future of the "horseless carriage" as a vehicle destined for more than inner-city travel and as a machine that would transform American life.

The Midas Touch (1997) Review

The Midas Touch (1997)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Midas Touch is a pretty good movie, if you have a sense of adventure and the patience for watching a film played out by kids. It was interesting to see how one choice, however good in nature, affected the outcome of several lives. That's sort of the point of the movie, you get to see how other lives are affected by your actions.
Since I was a kid I've had a definate interest in mythology and this movie kind of plays out based from the story of King Midas. Also it is fun to watch with your own kids, or nieces and nephews, because you get to see how they react to it and sometimes their reactions are a lot like your own. Anyway check it out, it's cool.

Darkest Knight (2002) Review

Darkest Knight (2002)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Sub-par even by the standards of throw-down direct-to-video B-movies, _Darkest Knight_ will disappoint all but the most ardent fan of truly unwatchable badfilm. A cavalcade of cliched heroes and villains apparently drawn at random from 3000 years of history and myth throw trade-school CG effects at one another, while displaying costumes (and acting) that would get them run out of any drunken SCA weekend outing at spearpoint.
Awful by any standard, _Darkest Knight_ fails to make good on even the modest promises made by the cover graphic and trailer. (I'll admit I was drawn in by the images on the box of flying dragons spouting flame. They appear nowhere in the actual movie. Think I have a case to sue for my four bucks back?)
Sound in plain stereo and a 4:3 aspect ratio make, in this age of DTS and 16:9, for a presentation nearly as lacking as the content. Possibly amusing - albeit unchallenging - fare for MST3K-style mockery, but unrewarding else. Oh, and naturally they're planning a sequel. Imagine my delight.

This is a great Walt Disney original Cartoon Classic. (I believe it is only available on VHS at the present time), which features 4 different Cartoon Classics: Mickey and the Seal (1948) starring Micky and Pluto; Bubble Bee (1948) starring Pluto; Mickey's Trailer (1938) starring Mickey, Donald and Goofy (Mickey's Trailer is mine and my daughter's, now 25 and 27, all time favorite); All in a Nutshell (1948) starring Chip'n'Dale and Donald. These are all great Cartoon Classics for all ages, from very young children to even us older adults, which will bring out the kid in us again... A Great Buy, a must have in everyone's home for a good old fashioned family fun night!!!

Maze DVD Collection (2005) Review

Maze DVD Collection (2005)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all, only watch it in Japanese with English Subtitles. As a rule, I never watch the Dubbed version of Anime. Because the Japanese voice actors are almost ALWAYS way better than the American voice actors.
Second, don't take it seriously. If you are looking for a Cowboy Bepop/Trigun experience this isn't it. If you are looking for an intellectual experience like Lain, this also isn't it.
Third, If you are offended by off color sexual humor this is not for you. If anime like Slayers, Sorcerer Hunters, Golden Boy, and Excel Saga bother you, then you wouldn't enjoy Maze.
However...!!!...if you are looking to purchase a low cost, fun, WTF, kind of anime - I completely recommend this series. I picked it up b/c it was only 30.00$ and had 52 episodes. I figured it would be something to keep me entertained for a couple of days. Plus, how can you not buy an anime that describes itself on the cover by saying, "Maze is a college girl who one day lands on another planet, has amnesia and discovers she has super powers."
Overall, this anime is fun, fast-paced and completely wacky. And it is absolutely re-watchable. I wouldn't pay more than 40.00$ for it but I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys the wacky anime humor. BTW, I have all of the anime discussed in this review, to give you an idea of my taste.

Pleasure Island Review

Pleasure Island
Average Reviews:

The graphics are nice on this, but the plot feels like it's part 2 in a trilogy. Like they skipped the part (a few hints) of how or why they got stranded on the island, and leave it open for sequels. They do however include plenty of adult scenes to make up where the plot leaves off, but even those look a bit mechanical with loops. Spoiler- there's a tentacle monster for those who are into that sort of thing.

Pufnstuf (1970) Review

Pufnstuf (1970)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I saw a bootleg letterboxed copy of this about seven or eight years ago at a friend's house up in Northern California, and I was astonished. All this is, really, is a 90-minute "H.R. Pufnstuf" episode, but it's one of the best ones ever conceived. In keeping with the times (and, quite possibly, the film's "real" potential audience) there are quickly intercut visual effects that look like they were stolen from the "Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite" section of "2001" throughout. It's a little thin plotwise (who watches this stuff for plot, anyway?), but there are plenty of musical numbers to keep the viewer entertained and amused. It's worth the price of admission alone to see Mama Cass Eliot (she plays Witchiepoo's friend Witch Hazel - yuk yuk) talking on the telephone while sitting in a bathtub full of food! Sadly, there's no "See You Next Week!" sign-off at the end of the movie, which may disappoint some. That's just a small quibble, though. Fans of Sid & Marty Krofft's work shouldn't miss out on this, and it also deserves shelf space in the collection of any fan of camp or Psychotronic stuff. Incredible.

Tuck Everlasting (1981) Review

Tuck Everlasting (1981)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've seen both this and the remake. This is by far the better. The acting is better, the characterizations more believable, and some of the dialogue I would put in a class with Shakespeare and Lois Bujold. The remake merely has a bigger budget, so the picture quality is better.
But it is as a *story* that this movie shines, for we are shown the world through the eyes of a young girl just on the leading edge of her womanhood, thrown into immortal peril, and given both a terrible choice and a great responsibility. Winnie and all the Tucks are brought to vibrant life, and we can empathize with each of them, and the joys and burdens their unwanted gifts bring them.
I mentioned dialogue earlier, and to this day I cannot think about Jesse Tuck's reply to the Sheriff's warning without shivering at just how profound that reply is. For that exchange alone, I would watch this movie again and again.
I hope and pray that THIS edition finally finds its way to DVD, where it, like the Tucks, may live forever.

Muppet Sing Alongs: Billy Bunny's Animal Songs (1993)
Average Reviews:

I first saw this video about 9 years ago when my mother was a nanny for a little boy who watched it incessantly. I recently saw something that reminded me of it and wanted to find it for my 2 year old. Needless to say, it wasn't an easy task. I did finally find it in the amazon.com marketplace and purchased it. It was everything I remembered with the fun songs and the hilarious characters. These are songs you don't mind having stuck in your head for a day or two and my 2 year old loves it too.
I recommend this for anyone who has a child who likes music and dancing and singing. They'll love it.

Finale (2009) Review

Finale (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, please disavow the ghastly cover artwork that implies things that this movie simply doesn't revel in. I fell in love with the photography, with so much beige tones, big grain, and that "big head" screen filling where the entre frame is taken up by tight close ups of someone talking, that I felt like it could have been a Paragon release from 1982. Kudos are in order for making a film with so many old cars, phones with cords, and early 80s decor that when the scene with the son and the cll phone came up at the end I felt it was a deus ex machina until I realized, hey, it just adds to the phantasmagorical aspects of it all. The plot concerns one mother who finds a demonic plot in her son's suicide, which at the onset of the film may be a descent into her insanity, and winds up with her fighting tooth and nail against a devil cult led by someone who may be another mother- or Maeter of B. (something I kept from writing out fully to avoid ruining the plot, just keep an eye out for the feather boa to see who I mean), as it were, as this films quickly veers into what could be construed as another option of the Third Mother of "Suspiria De Profundis". I am going to take heat for this one, but I felt like this film would have made for a more satisfying conclusion to the Mothers' trilogy than the film Argento eventually made as it has more of a rabbit hole approach to it, and has a dream-like aspect to it- so much so that it reminded me in parts of "Inland Empire." And hey, when was the last time you saw a DTV horror flick that didn't have gratuitous rock music during the end credits. Overall, I think I will be watching this one again- it would make a great 80s throwback double bill with "House of the Devil." (And don't take offence at the Argento comment because I am- and will always be- a great fan of his work!)

The Pagemaster (1994) Review

The Pagemaster (1994)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the first movie I remember seeing as a kid. I LOVED it. It was my favorite. Then, I didn't get to see it again for several years (stupid Blockbuster!) When I finally saw it again, I STILL liked it. I like it as I write this very day. The music is good (the background music behind the movie that nobody really conciously listens to, but helps the mood anyway). The animation's good, too. And I ACTUALLY KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT! (How often does that happen?) See, what happens a lot of the time, is that people blame colors they don't like, or designs that are annoying, or WHATEVER on the animation. But it isn't the animation's fault! The way the thing on-screen MOVES is the only thing the animators do, mostly. So, if you really want to criticize the animation, look at how they MOVE, not what they look like. Do you see?
I think that, really, most of the reason that this is one of my favorite movies is that it is about BOOKS. When I was little, my dad read me "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" and "The Hobbit"; things like that. So, naturally, I loved books and stories. This is practically the only movie I've seen that encourages reading so much while still being sincere. It's obvious that the filmmakers themselves (or at least, a lot of the people working on it) actually like to read. THAT'S really why I like the Pagemaster.
So, if you like to read, watch this movie. If you don't (you utter nincompoop), stay away, and don't criticize what you have no comprehension of.

This is my favorite production of the ALICE books. I love the sets, songs, and casting. It's also very British, which I think adds another great element to the mix.
However, skip this DVD edition. I got it, excited to see ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND in widescreen and, perhaps a better print than what's previously been available.
No such luck.
The DVD appears to be struck from the same crappy VHS version that's been out there for ages. Faded colors. Pan-and-scan. In this age of DVD, quality like this is such a shame.

This movie is a bit of a departure for Michael Keaton.. 1. It's a family movie, that younger kids will really click to. 2. Michael Keaton also sings a few tunes in his rock band, I found that a biut interesting.
The whole story revolves around a Father, and his son. The father never has enough time for his child,, and dies suddenly in a car wreck. Michael Keaton come back to Earth as a Snowman, and find that he has to spend some time with his boy. Winter doesn't last forever though, and it does have a sad ending.
