(More customer reviews)I love this movie. I watch it on TV when it's on but some years it's only on once or not at all. It's not a movie all about Santa Claus. I'm religious and love the message of the movie, however it does not have a religious theme to it. You don't have to have that background to appreciate that it's all about love. It's about what love really is and what it takes for a man to realize how much he loves his wife and how far he will go to show that love. The ending is perfect. I can't believe they have not made this for every region. Before purchase, I called the company who made one of my DVD players because it did not have the region on it. They told me it would play any region but they lied. The only way I can play this movie is through my portable DVD player. I can hook my portable DVD player up to play through my TV so the whole family can enjoy the movie. It will also play on my computer. The movie is wonderful, but I would caution everyone to make sure they have a way to play it before purchase. I really don't understand why they don't make it for region 1 players.

Truman Capote's a Christmas Memory (1967) Review

It's a rare pleasure to watch this dramatization of a piece of great
American literature, and it has become a ritual in my home to watch
this movie with friends and family each year. Donnie Melvin and
Geraldine Page work so well together, they truly bring the story to life.
Hard to imagine, but the original short story was written while author
Truman Capote was vacationing in Hong Kong.
A Christmas Memory was filmed in direct collaboration with Mr. Capote,
and it won many awards, including a Peabody and three Emmys, after it
first aired on ABC Television's Stage67 series.
One problem: This VHS cassette is in black and white and thus offers a
diminished experience from what was created in the 1966 color original.
The story still shines through, but this small masterpiece deserves
better. A color copy of A Christmas Memory of equivalent quality to the
above can be found online elsewhere.
If you wish to someday see a restored version of this movie on DVD,
won't you please logon to The Criterion Collection site and submit a
title suggestion on their Ask Jon Mulvaney page? Maybe with enough
interest expressed to Criterion for a restoration, this dream of many
will one day come true.

As the movie opens you see a young boy, Terry McQuinn, eager for his father's attention and approval. But his father is so focused on his work as a caretaker for the vacation homes of the wealthy that he has little time to realize how much his motherless son needs care-taking. One of the families for whom he works is coming to their vacation home, Serenity Cottage, for the Christmas holiday and Terry's father has reluctantly allowed him to come along as he prepares the home for their arrival. The Wentworth family shows up while Terry and his father are still at the home--a happy little girl named Katherine, her adoring father, and her seemingly cynical, unhappy mother. The father has a tradition of taking gifts to children in a hospital at Christmas and he invites Terry to go along with him and his daughter to the nearby hospital. It is a very snowy evening and there is an accident which takes a life. Mr. Wentworth blames himself and wanders off, never returning home. Mrs. Wentworth takes her daughter, gets a divorce, and never returns to the vacation home.
As time passes and Terry has grown to be a teenager, the tension between his father and himself has also grown. The final straw is when Mr. McQuinn fails to come to his son's graduation because he is doing some work for one of the wealthy families. He and Terry have bitter words between them and Terry takes off.
Flash forward many years. Terry is a successful attorney in L.A. His father, from whom he is still estranged, dies and Terry returns home to settle his affairs. While there he sees a note his father had made about the current owner wanting Serenity Cottage opened for the holidays. He calls and explains that his father has died, he is just there to tie up the loose ends and will be leaving soon so he can't help them, but will find someone who can. After he learns that the owner is the daughter of the former owner, the little girl that he had known, he stays on and is there to meet Katherine and her very unique daughter. She has forgotten that one visit she made as a child and has no memory of ever having known Terry. He does not tell her otherwise. The story takes some interesting turns from there.
Throughout the movie it deals with some serious issues--dysfunctional families, grief, homelessness, adoption, disabilities, and deception. Of course, there is romance in the air--and also intrigue, as you learn the fate of Katharine's father. The storyline holds your interest and the characters are not one dimensional. The acting is good and the movie is well worth the viewing. I highly recommend it, but if you have young children it might be a little deep for them.
At the time of this writing the price of this movie through the marketplace sellers started around $35. If that doesn't drop you should be able to get it at a Hallmark store for around $20 or from their website for an additional $7 in shipping.

Miracle on 34th Street (1994) (1994) Review

(More customer reviews)Few remakes do justice to the original classic and even fewer improve on it. This one does both. Mara Wilson is wonderful and gives a once in a lifetime performance. In an effort to put a twist on the original they changed the scene where Santa speaks a foreign language to a child come to sit on his lap and instead he uses sign language to speak to a hearing impaired child. The result is a very touching scene. John Hughes has done it again!

Snow (2004) Review

Snow is charming and loveable, with great characters and a winning role by the always-wonderful Tom Cavanagh. I watched it twice last year and am so thrilled that ABC Family decided to release the DVD. This is certainly a new holiday classic in my house!

Warner Brothers Classic Holiday Collection, Vol. 1 (Boys Town / A Christmas Carol / Christmas in Connecticut / The Singing Nun) (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)This is a great dvd collection with plenty of extras. For me the extras add so much to a movie. Since all of these movies have been around for a while I just want to make some comments about the extras.
Boys Town
Unlike a previous reviewer my copy of Boys Town came with some great extras. The disk is double sided with the one side having Boys Town and the second including the less successful sequel Men of Boys Town also starring Mickey Rooney and Spencer Tracy.
Other features include the featurette "The City of Little Men" which is a 10:56 long and includes Father Flanagan. "Girls and Boys Town" is a 2:07 look at the modern Boys and Girls Town. There is also and excerpt from "Good News of 1939" which is a 16:42 long radio broadcast with Tracy and Rooney in excerpts from the movie. This is sound only with no video. Also included are theatrical trailers from both movies.
Christmas in Connecticut
This includes a superb Oscar winning short called "Star in the Night" which is 21:24 long. It is a modern story about a man and his pregnant wife who stop at an inn on Christmas evening only to find that it is full. Included in the movie, set in the southwest of the United States, are three wise cowboys attracted to a star at a gasoline station at the inn. It is a great story and highly recommended. Also included is a theatrical trailer for the movie.
A Christmas Carol
This includes a number of great extras aside from the theatrical trailer. It includes "Jackie Cooper's Christmas Party" a 9:00 long featurette in which Jackie Cooper convinces the Metro Goldwyn Mayer studio to have a Christmas party for his football team and the servers include some well known stars of the time. There is a brief 1:41 film of Judy Garland singing "Silent Night" in front of a church choir. Finally there is an Oscar nominated cartoon called "Peace on Earth" which 8:47 long. This is the one feature I was troubled about. It is a cartoon that takes place after mankind has destroyed itself in a World War and the animals are the only ones left on the earth to sing holiday songs. While it makes a good statement about the dangers of war it is something that may trouble youngsters.
Singing Nun
Finally, there is the Singing Nun which includes a theatrical trailer. Importantly the movie does not include any chapters so if you want to skip to Debbie Reynolds singing Dominique you have to fast forward or use what ever chapter feature you have on your dvd player. This is the only disappointment in this great set of movies. The movie is fine but I like chapters on my dvd's.
This is a great set that is well worth the price. It is a treasured part of my Christmas movie collection.

The Christmas Story Lady Review

The original title is "The Story Lady". This is just a warning not to be fooled as I was believing it was a Christmas squeal as the movie has nothing to do about Christmas. Thus the reason why the title fooled me, that and they changed the movie description!

Funky Monkey Review

(More customer reviews)They just don't make very many good family-friendly films these days; they're too busy taking classics and making modern-day mockeries out of them. Funky Monkey, though, is a very funny, perfectly family-friendly film that just about everybody can enjoy (I guess it's the fight scenes that earned it a PG instead of a G rating). Normally, I shy away from movies built around chimpanzees - give me a chimpanzee that knows martial arts, though, and I am there. Clemens is no ordinary chimpanzee - he's been specially trained by former CIA agent Jack McCall (Matthew Modine) to be some kind of simian super agent. When the training is finished, though, McCall's boss sends him packing and makes plan to transfer Clemens to some kind of biological research place (where study means death, of course). The ultimate plan is to make an army of chimps just like Clemens. McCall's not about to let that happen, so he rescues the chimp and rides off into the night with him.
The pair turns up in San Diego, where they meet Michael Dean (Seth Adkins) - after a certain little action-packed episode at the zoo. Thanks to Michael and his mother Megan (Roma Downey), McCall and Clemens have a place to hide out for awhile. The bad guys, including two complete idiots, eventually track them down, of course - but before that happens, McCall has time to make buddies with the kid and even give him a little guidance concerning the ladies (which apparently includes changing his height at will, as he's about a foot shorter than Christina (Kaleigh Krish) at one point, a few inches taller at another). Tommy Davidson and Gilbert Gottfried make short but memorable appearances, and I believe a good time was had by all.
McCall does the lion's share of the fighting here, but Clemens acquits himself well in various physical situations. He's not exactly Jackie Chan, of course, but he's still fun to watch. I was figuring on giving this film four stars until I got to the last twenty minutes or so - those later scenes are so funny, I just had to give Funky Monkey five stars overall. Sure, the whole film is completely unbelievable, but who cares? It's a funny movie that children will almost certainly enjoy, and I believe most adults will find a lot of entertainment value in it as well. Best of all, it's a film parents can let their children watch without any hesitation.

A Stranger's Heart (2007) Review

(More customer reviews)I too saw this movie on the Hallmark Channel. It was recommended by a friend of mine who had a transplant 10 years ago. I also have a daughter who had a bone marrow and kidney transplant, 19 yrs and 3 years ago. This movie brought back memories I had forgotten. The feelings of helplessness, of living in hospitals, seeing other patients pass away, withdrawing from life ... so many conflicting emotions. I felt it was an accurate portrayal of what a person experiences. The characters could have been more developed and some of the details seemed a little bit stretched, but still believable. It is a heart-warming story and makes you want to truly treasure your health and the blessings you've been given.

Jack Frost (1998) Review

(More customer reviews)This movie is a bit of a departure for Michael Keaton.. 1. It's a family movie, that younger kids will really click to. 2. Michael Keaton also sings a few tunes in his rock band, I found that a biut interesting.
The whole story revolves around a Father, and his son. The father never has enough time for his child,, and dies suddenly in a car wreck. Michael Keaton come back to Earth as a Snowman, and find that he has to spend some time with his boy. Winter doesn't last forever though, and it does have a sad ending.

The Christmas Box (1995) Review

(More customer reviews)I am a big fan of Richard Paul Evans, and the news that his classic "Christmas Box" had been made into a movie was enough to send me scurrying. As they do with his books, video snobs will dismiss this movie for its spiritual and emotional message, but I say pooey to them. This is one of the best movies I've ever seen.
The ever-loved Richard Thomas ("Good night, John boy!") plays Richard Evans, a young man with a wife and preschool daughter who is overworking himself, because "I want you [wife Keri] and Jenna to have EVERYTHING!" As a result, he is always late and always preoccupied with his ski-supply store and impending expansion.
Tired of being the apartment manager, Keri convinces him to answer an ad, placed by an old woman with an enormous house. The old lady, Mary Anne Parkin, gives them a trial period in her home (Keri does some cooking and cleaning, and Richard does a bit of yardwork) and soon befriends Jenna and Keri. Richard, however, finds her weird, cryptic, and rigid. He's also having strange dreams abou an angel beckoning to him. But as Christmas approaches, changes for the family and for Mary will alter their lives forever, with the secrets of Mary's past and the underlying question, "What was the first gift of Christmas?"
Every scene of this movie is excellent scripted and filmed; scenes ring extremely true, such as the scene where Mary finds Richard drinking straight from a pitcher of orange juice--their expressions are priceless. Richard Thomas perfectly fits the overachiever yuppie who shies away from certain questions and concepts--perhaps because he's afraid of them. Annette O'Toole is equally great as his wife, who is sick of their personal lives playing second-fiddle to business; Kelsey Mulrooney is remarkably good as Jenna, occasionally experiencing flat moments (such as times when Jenna's ashamed) but overall above-average for child actors. Maureen O'Hara is pure gold, playing Mary to perfection; you can see the shell melt away during crucial moments, her eyes shining with warmth.
The camerawork is excellent: the apartment looks cramped and overcrowded, compared to the airy spaciousness of Mary's house. Which, BTW, is gorgeous--I'd love to know where they shot it, because the house is truly beautiful, old and ornate, but with just the right amount of lived-in atmosphere.
I don't watch this movie just at Christmastime--it's far too good to be restricted. If you're in the mood for a beautiful movie, this is truly for you.
(My only questions: When will they put this out on DVD, and when will they also put out the sequel?! I'm waiting for a copy of "Timepiece" people!)
