Once Is Not Enough (1975) Review

Once Is Not Enough (1975)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In the lexicon of bad film, there is surely a top spot for the delightfully skewed adaptation of Jacqueline Susann's "Valley of the Dolls." "Valley" is perhaps the most famous side of Susann's literary "trash trilogy" which includes "Love Machine" and "Once Is Not Enough." All the novels were fabulously popular in their day and all have been produced into movies with varying degrees of success. Sublimely ridiculous, "Valley" is beloved as a camp classic for so many terrific reasons. If possible, the film of "Love Machine" was even more preposterous--and much more of a "love it" or hate it" proposition. And then we've got "Once Is Not Enough." Easily the most subdued of the film adaptations, "Once" doesn't actually benefit from this distinction.

The film starts out promisingly enough with Kirk Douglas as a down and out filmmaker willing to do anything for the light and love of his life, his daughter January (Deborah Raffin, alternately charming and annoying). He marries a wealthy acquaintance, the terrific Alexis Smith, in a business arrangement to secure his daughter's future. Disturbingly, Douglas and Raffin are as close and co-dependent as any father-daughter team can be. A smarmy George Hamilton is on hand as a possible suitor for Raffin, and a man hungry Brenda Vaccaro camps it up as Raffin's friend and employer (although for the life of me, I could never figure out why she was getting a paycheck). I genuinely enjoyed the beginning and set-up of "Once Is Not Enough," but when Raffin meets David Janssen--its all over. Raffin romances Janssen (an older man--she does have daddy issues--that despises her father) and the film turns a bit too earnest for its own good.

I didn't hate "Once Is Not Enough." However, when the picture changes its focus to this May-December pairing, it loses much of its vitality. In the end, only Vaccaro maintains a pleasing sense of absurdity and unpredictability. Spouting terrific one-liners and unabashedly over-the-top, Vaccaro was actually nominated for an Oscar! Yes, as hard as it is to believe, "Once Is Not Enough" is an Academy Award nominated film for, of all things, its campiest element. Still, I loved Vaccaro. It's hard to really recommend "Once Is Not Enough." It's not serious enough to be moving but not funny enough to be a guilty pleasure. For me, the nicest Susann adaptation, therefore, is the one I enjoy the least after all these years. KGHarris, 9/10.

I saw this movie on TV in 2001, and I LOVED it!! I can't really say why, except that the story line, Daniel Massey's dry humor,
the beautiful scenery, and last but not least - the happy ending just made my day. I especially recommend it for a busy, stressed person who needs to escape. Perfect!
I want it for my movie collection. ...

Love's Brother Review

Love's Brother
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
`Love's Brother' is an Australian film by first-time director Jan Sardi, known as the writer for critically acclaimed `Shine.' But the feel-good touch of `Love's Brother' is closer to `The Notebook' (for which he also wrote the script), and though the film is predictable like that Nicholas Sparks adaptation, this little film is equally romantic and heart-warming as the hit movie from Hollywood.
The film is set in a unique background (probably reflecting that of the director). We are directly introduced to the small community of Italian immigrants in Australia during the 1950s, where Angelo (Giovanni Ribisi) is looking for someone to marry, sending letter and his photo to the ladies (introduced by a kind but a bit officious matchmaking agent) to ask if she could come to his town and live with him. Unfortunately, every letter returns with polite refusal, and Angelo, being too timid and lacking self-confidence, sends his handsome brother's photo in the next letter, without telling anyone about it.
The problem is, his unsuspecting brother Gino (Adam Garcia) has already a girl friend Connie (Silvia de Santis). And things get more complicated when Rosetta (Amelia Warner) arrives from the South Italy, believing that Gino is the one with whom she has exchanges the wedding vow.
Jan Sardi shows steady and orthodox skills as director, not ignoring the details of the Italian community, and the four characters whose fate we truly care. The film is a romantic comedy, but the stress is given more on romance than comedy, and the photography of Andrew Lesnie (`Lord of the Rings' trilogy) perfectly captures the mood of the story with the delicate colors.
Among the four principal characters, perhaps Gibisi's Angelo is the least engaging and sympathetic one though he is playing the pivotal role, and I found he slightly overdoes the eccentric nature of the boy unlucky in love. Amelia Warner is stunningly beautiful, and Adam Garcia is good-looking and good-natured, but the film allows them to show little more than that. Veteran actor Barry Otto (father of Miranda Otto, Eowyn of `LOTR') appears as kind priest, but too short time is allotted to him. And sorry to report this, but `Love's Brother' will end in a predicable way like any good romantic comedy does in the end.
But I like the film, and love the atmosphere and optimistic, dream-like nature of it. It is like listening to a familiar story in a land where we know happiness is promised for everyone.

Desperate for Love (1989) Review

Desperate for Love (1989)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This video is based loosely on a true story of young love and obsession gone horribly wrong and ending in murder. The subject matter involves a young lady (Tammy Lauren) "desperately" trying to win the affections of a young man who is only mildly interested in her, and the consequences of her using his best friend (Christian Slater) to attract his attention. Christian Slater's character has been in love with the young lady for sometime, and the misplaced affection he receives brings the situation to a horrible end. This film had a lot of conversational drama and very little action. Fans of Tammy Lauren and Christian Slater are probably going to want to own this film out of a since of completism, because both young people have considerable camera time. As a huge fan of Tammy Lauren myself, it pains me to see her talents wasted in this movie, but her ability to come off as real and true to the character she plays still stands out in the performance.

A Stranger's Heart (2007)

I too saw this movie on the Hallmark Channel. It was recommended by a friend of mine who had a transplant 10 years ago. I also have a daughter who had a bone marrow and kidney transplant, 19 yrs and 3 years ago. This movie brought back memories I had forgotten. The feelings of helplessness, of living in hospitals, seeing other patients pass away, withdrawing from life ... so many conflicting emotions. I felt it was an accurate portrayal of what a person experiences. The characters could have been more developed and some of the details seemed a little bit stretched, but still believable. It is a heart-warming story and makes you want to truly treasure your health and the blessings you've been given.

Romeo & Juliet: A Monkey's Tale (2006) Review

Romeo and Juliet: A Monkey's Tale (2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Flipped over to this and was immediately floored. This was a bunch of out-of-context shots of various monkeyshines happening in Thailand overlayed somewhat with the plot from Romeo and Juliet. Regardless of the created plot, the viewer learns a lot about this particular urban monkey environment. The editing and music are fantastic, including high-tension action scenes that hearken toward summer blockbuster movies. The narration is pretty good but with a lot of groan-worthy Shakespeare puns (that have their own worth in a low-comedy way.) Overall, a very original take on the standard nature documentary, with thrills, ups, downs, crying, laughing, the whole bit. The narrator was excellent but I couldn't help wonder why they didn't go with a more Shakespearian British accent. Probably, that doesn't really matter. Highly enjoyable, and kudos to whoever greenlit this as it's quite daring. It is hilariously influenced by Baz Lurman's Romeo + Juliet. Five stars without even thinking about it. Extremely entertaining.

Okinawa - The Last Battle (History Channel) (2005) Review

Okinawa - The Last Battle (History Channel) (2005)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a Battle of Okinawa hobbyist and current resident of the island, I spend a lot of time reading about, visiting and talking to knowledgable people about the battle for Okinawa. I found this video to have some great video clips, and described the importance of the battle well, but since it was made for the 50th anniversary of the battle (1995), it is full of melodramatic comments and pro-US biased journalism. It tries to show aspects of the battle that were down and dirty, but doesn't capture the misery and absolute necessity to win that all three sides had to deal with, which makes it entertainment, not education. In fact, the Okinawan locals or 3rd side, is only referenced in the last few minutes of the show as only casualty numbers. Now if the Allies lost 13,000, and the Japanese lost 130,000, and the people who lived on the island lost 310,000, then I say that a little more should be said about what role they played. I think this show is valuable to have for a collector of battle of Okinawa memorabilia, but should not be relied on for a sole educational purpose. If you are really interested in a great wartime read, look into the myriad of great books available like The Battle of Okinawa by George Feifer, The Girl with the White Flag by Tomiko Higa or the online text, Okinawa: The Last Battle by Roy E. Appleman, James M. Burns, Russell A. Gugeler, and John Stevens.

Danielle Steel's Star (1993) Review

Danielle Steel's Star (1993)
Average Reviews:

_Star_ is a beautiful movie that can be seen before or after reading the book. The characters are chosen perfectly and the acting is beautiful. However, the chemistry between characters is not what is should be. The actor that plays Spencer Hill has more chemistry with the woman he was tricked into marrying than he does with Crystal, his true love. This video tells the story of Crystal Wyatt, a shockingly stunning true country girl who loves her ranch and Spencer Hill, a handsome veteran of the Korean War who does not like to let anyone down, which the reason why this story ever happens in the first place. The singing in this movie is splendid, as well; it put tears into my eyes. This is my favorite movie and I recommend it full-heartedly.

Journey of the Heart/Heart's Adrift Review

Journey of the Heart/Heart's Adrift
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I originally bought this DVD solely for "Hearts Adrift", which was a USA Network original movie that aired in 1995. I have been waiting for the DVD release for years and have searched pretty much every movie website & media store for VHS copies, but to no avail. Then, Amazon.com finally sent me notice that it was being released & would be available. I was thrilled!!
Sydney Penny & Scott Reeves are a winning combination as polar opposites, who come together, thanks to their widowed parents, whom happen to share a romantic past of their own. This film is a great testament to the adage that "sometimes you need to go back in order to move forward". It also happens to feature several well-known soap (daytime and primetime) stars. In addition to Penny (All My Children et al.) & Reeves (The Young & the Restless), it also features Kathleen Noone & Don Murray of "Knots Landing" fame and Nicholas Coster (Santa Barbara et al.). With a bit supporting part played by Julie Benz of Showtime's thrill ride "Dexter", as a young debutante vying for Reeves' Kyle Raines' affections with Penny's Max.
The other film in this double feature is "Journey of the Heart" with Cybill Shepard, whom I also enjoy and wish she would either return to TV or make more films, preferably with Bruce Willis. I have loved them together ever since "Moonlighting" and miss their effortless spark & terrific chemistry together. "Journey" is a very heartfelt film based on a true story of a blind, mentally challenged, musical savant pianist and his courageous mother/family. I recall seeing the movie on TV or cable many years ago. It was definitely a tender & heartwarming refresher.

Under the Lighthouse Dancing Review

Under the Lighthouse Dancing
Average Reviews:

I did not feel the movie at all sugary and "sentimental". One of the friends reveals she's dying. If the characters did not express sentiment, they'd be sociopaths. The movie was slow-paced, but not painfully so, and the scenery was beautiful. The film contains a wedding to end all weddings, certain to please many people. My only quibble with the movie is the music played at the wedding. It needed to be joyful and I'm sure the filmmaker thought this music was, but to me it was determined, abandoned, maybe defiant. I would have preferred something more emotionally in tune with the rest of the music of the film. Watching this movie a second time last night, I was reminded of the novel "Last Things, First Things." Both are set largely on a beautiful island, both deal with death, both involve love and relationships, yet both manage to be upbeat with satisfying endings.

Way We Were (1973) Review

Way We Were (1973)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As stated many times before, THE WAY WE WERE is one of only a handful of romantic blockbusters to actually feature an intelligent script and complex characters. Writer Arthur Luarents' based his screenplay (and subsequent novel) on girl he knew in college, who fought for liberal (and sometimes communist) causes. Three decades after it's release, THE WAY WE WERE remains one of the few cinematic depictions of the Red Scare that swept America in the forties and fifties; the backdrop of which lends the surrounding love story greater potency and depth. The film was a surprise box office smash when originally released, and became the fifth-highest grossing film of 1973 and was instantly embraced as a classic.
Katie Morosky is a character that Barbra Streisand born play, and she delivers on all accounts. Fierce and determined, yet vulnerable and self-conscious, Katie is a tricky character and Streisand inhabits her so deeply that she seems nothing less than completely believable. Justifiably nominated for a Best Actress Oscar, she inexplicably lost to Glenda Jackson's shrill performance in the barely remembered A TOUCH OF CLASS. This was clearly a major blunder on the side of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Robert Redford, who had actually turned down the role twice before director and friend Sydney Pollack talked him into taking the part, displays some of the best reflective acting ever seen on the big screen and effectively brings forth the dark side of being stereotyped as the All-American golden boy (although Redford did not receive an Oscar nod for playing Hubbell in this film, he was nominated for Best Actor that same year for his light comedic performance in THE STING).
THE WAY WE WERE is different from most romances in that it is not death, feuding families, or any other societal phenomena that directly tear the couple apart. Katie and Hubbell are simply passionate individuals with highly volatile, and contrasting, ideologies; the conflict of which is expressed in several brilliantly written and acted scenes that shimmer with the type of intelligence and honesty that is rarely seen in cinema today. The film's enduring popular success with the mass audience may very well be due to the magnetic chemistry between Streisand and Redford, the gorgeous cinematography, and the strong directorial hand supplied by Pollack. However, it is the complexity of the romance with politics and the strong characterizations by both leads that continues to make THE WAY WE WERE the best love story for adults.
About the DVD: The picture quality is very good, quite possibly the best the film has ever looked. You must remember that movie has always had a stylistically hazy look. The sound quality is also vastly improved. Pollack's commentary track is interesting, but the 60-minute documentary is the best extra on the disc. Featuring insightful interviews from Pollack, Streisand, and Laurents (as well as composer Marvin Hamlisch and lyricists Alan and Marilyn Bergman) the documentary is well-produced and entertaining, and it was great to finally see those much-debated deleted scenes.

I loved this film! Having read many of Sendak's books as a child it was wonderful to revisit the stories that filled my childhood and learn about their fascinating author and illustrator. Jonze and Bangs create an intimate and moving portrait of a brilliant man. Sendak's own personal life is filled with rich stories and his sense of humor is infectious. I would recommend this doc, if you ever read one of Sendak's books you need to learn about this amazing artist.

The other day at the video store my wife found this movie. We hadnt heard much about it. My wife brought the movie home.
This movie is a real find. One of those romance movies that will touch your heart.
The movie starts out with Danny Foster (Drew Johnson) and Melissa Curtis (Corinna Harney-Jones).
They grow up together as best friends. However all the time she is in denial of their love for each other.
He persues his baseball career and puts her initials on the mound everytime he pitches for good luck. She is simply unable to keep from thinking about him. I wont tell you much more about the movie because I dont want to ruin it. This is a movie that makes you feel good as you root for the two of them to finally be together.
Watch this movie with that special someone in your life.

The Love Letter (1998) Review

The Love Letter (1998)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This wonderful Hallmark Hall of Fame television film was adapted from a short story from the master of time travel novels, Jack Finney ("Time and Again", "Time After Time", "About Time", "From Time to Time", just to name a few). This story by Finney delves once again with time, in that a modern-day young man named Scott (played by Campbell Scott) discovers a letter hidden in a secret compartment of an antique desk that he had just purchased. The letter (as well as the antique desk) belonged to a woman named Elizabeth (played by Jennifer Jason Leigh) who (at the time of her writings) is living during the civil war.
Scott becomes so enchanted by the letter that he ends writing to her, and after some obsession, and on a lark, actually decides to mail his response at a post office with historical significance using an authentic-period one-cent stamp. Shortly thereafter, and to his utter astonishment, he discovers a second letter in the hidden compartment. This letter turns out to be her reply to his letter...and thus begins a fascinating relationship of two people falling in love, but separated not by distance, but by 130 some odd years of time.
Although this may seem to be a "You've Got Mail" with a time twist, it is really more similar to "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" and "Somewhere in Time". Believe me, if you liked either one of those films, you'll love "The Love Letter". This fantasy/drama pulls you in and keeps you pleasantly entranced all the way to the end. While this film does suffer a bit from situations handled too simplistically, I'm such a sucker for this type of film that I quickly forgave these missteps.
Both Campbell Scott and Jennifer Jason Leigh were pretty good in this film, but the standout performance (and the one most believable) was Daphne Ashbrook who played Scott's fiancée.
While this small film may pale in comparison to the typical big budget Hollywood films, it is, nonetheless, a film I think you will be delighted to have in your collection. My main concern, however, is the quality of the dvd. I've had difficulty with dvd's by Artisan Entertainment before, and so I did with this one (blurry on certain scenes and pretty jumpy). If you've had good luck with them (could be my player), by all means go get it (or maybe it might be wise to get the VHS instead). Between 1 and 10, "The Love Letter" (which feels like a breath of fresh air) deserves a solid 8.

I originally saw this movie on hallmark and thoroughly enjoyed it. The story is sweet and any gal that has ever brought home a guy that didn't quite fit her dad's perfect image for her will relate with all the "hoops" the guy in this film jumps through to try to please his prospective father-in-law. I found it offered both humor and an endearing quality with what this guy was willing to do for his love. Probably is more a gal movie but if you like the farm, hunting, or the outdoors you might enjoy it as well. In a time where a nice romance seems harder to find...this is a keeper! Just don't expect a big blockbuster movie frill budget effects with the male and female actors of the moment and you'll enjoy it.

A Very Long Engagement (2004) Review

A Very Long Engagement (2004)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My understanding is that France has declined to submit A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT for Oscar consideration as 2004's Best Foreign Film. I can't imagine why.
War is not glorious. Especially if you're Manech (Gaspard Ulliel), a young French soldier convicted by a military court, along with four others, of committing self-mutilation with the intent of escaping service in the front lines of World War I. The punishment is grotesque. Rather than death by firing squad, the five are forced over the top of the most forward trench and into the No Man's Land between the French and German positions - there to die by whatever bullet, mortar shell, or bomb strikes them down. The subsequent deaths of all five are attested to. Letters are sent to surviving family members by the French authorities saying their boys died in battle. This was in 1917.
Mathilde (Audrey Tatou) was Manech's fiancée when he marched off to war. She's also crippled in one leg after having been afflicted with polio at a very young age. In 1920, she's contacted by a dying survivor of the war, ex-Sergeant Esperanza (Jean-Pierre Becker), who'd been in charge of the provost detail assigned to escort the five condemned men to the front trench, as well as act as carrier of the last missive each was permitted to write home. He tells Mathilde of their bizarre fate, and gives her their last letters, which he's kept since the war's end. Using these and the veteran's story to provide clues, Mathilde embarks on a lengthy search for the truth behind Manech's death with the help of a private investigator (Ticky Holgado). Interviewing friends, family members, and lovers of Marech's four condemned companions, as well as other soldiers present in the trench, Mathilde needs to answer the question, "Is Manech truly dead?" She has no doubts; he's alive. But, the evidence is elusive and inconsistent.
As crafted by director Jean-Pierre Jeunet, A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT is a hypnotic tale of mystery, official cover-ups, lies, misperceptions, secrets, coincidence, tenuous clues, guilt, innocence, honor, and, ultimately, love. Jeunet has created a masterpiece of special FX, lighting, unusual camera angles, split screen images, breathtaking panoramas, and visual asides. And then there are the entrancing depths of Audrey Tatou's brown eyes, in which I could happily lose myself forever. There's not been the likes of this young actress since Audrey Hepburn.
Though not advertised as such, this film is a gut wrenching depiction of World War I trench warfare. It's perhaps the best I've ever seen, especially when shown in contrast to gentle Mathilde's quest through post-war Paris and the luminous French countryside.
Astute and sardonic Mathilde, perhaps because of her affliction, is a take-no-prisoners dynamo of perseverance. No obstacle is too great that it can't be overcome. In the end, she finds ... Truth. And, if you see A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT, you'll experience amazement, delight, and tears. For me, it's 2004's Best Foreign Film no matter what the Academy votes.

The film is set in France near the end of World War I in the deadly trenches of the Somme, in the gilded Parisien halls of power, and in the modest home of an indomitable provincial girl. It tells the story of this young woman's relentless, moving and sometimes comic search for her fiancC)e, who has disappeared. He is one of five French soldiers believed to have been court-martialed under mysterious circumstances and pushed out of an allied trench into an almost-certain death in no-man's land. What follows is an investigation into the arbitrary nature of secrecy, the absurdity of war, and the enduring passion, intuition and tenacity of the human heart.DVD Features:Audio CommentaryDeleted Scenes:With Director audio commentaryDocumentaries:Paris in the 20'sThe Zepplin ExplosionFeaturette:The Making of A Very Long EngagementTheatrical Trailer
