(More customer reviews)Amazon's listings, normally accurate to a fault, erroneously tag this item as "full screen." In fact it's widescreen, 1.85 or 1.78, it's hard to tell, and the jewel case itself only states (in English) "Letterbox." So it's the original theatrical release aspect ratio. Don't worry about its being a Brazilian pressing: the language is English, the opening titles are English, everything English. Only the jewel case text is in Portuguese.
Quality wise? A-okay, certainly better than Fox's own VHS version which is full of streaks, scratches, and quivers. But it needs to be digitally remastered and released in DVD by Fox itself, Dolby 5.0 all that stuff. Meanwhile, this version is the best thing going, and it's damn good.
As for the movie. Well . . . de gustibus and all that. For me, the most fascinating persona is not Lot (Stewart Granger) but the "Queen of Sodom," a lady of tastes sapphic and sadistic ("Next only to the pleasure of giving death is the excitement of watching it" she burbles to a horrified Lot), played to a perfect lip-snarl by the French actress Anouk Aimée.
Most of all though is the MUSIC SCORE, which outclasses every other element of the movie and is a bit incongruous to find accompanying this biblical pabulum, amusing and visually stunning as much of it is. To me the score is simply one of Miklos Rozsa's absolute finest, his third best after Ben-Hur and Quo Vadis, utterly LUCID and free of the mushy dissonances that occasionally, just occasionally muck up the Rozsa repertoire. Take just one example: a pastorale Rozsa called "By the River," which plays when Lot is courting his wife-to-be (Pier Angeli), a little gem-of-a-gem that stands with ANY pastorale in any of his films.
So we need to have this DVD remastered in state-of-the-art by Fox itself in Dolby 5.0, the whole works. But meanwhile, kudos to the Brazilians for doing Fox's work for it, a very very credible job. Buy with confidence.

St Patrick: Irish Legend (2000) Review

St. Patrick is one of the most well know, yet least "known about" significant personalities in world history. God used Patrick to transform Ireland and Ireland's influence helped shape the world. The story starts with Patrick as a reckless youth, captured by slave traders. In slavery to a Irish Warlord he has a Divine encounter that grows into a holy passion for God. He is miraculously delivered from Ireland and returns to his family. Back in his British homeland He hears the call of God to return as a missionary to Israel. Despite numerous obstacles, he refuses to let go of the heavenly vision and soon returns to Irish soil as the Bishop of Ireland. Through power encounters with the druid priests and a servants heart of love for the Irish people, Patrick becomes the catalyst for a spiritual awakening. Patrick Bergen's portrayal of St. Patrick is convincing and compelling. Malcolm McDowell ideally personifies the religious hierarchical antagonists who oppose Patrick. The special effects leave something to be desired but they do not take away from the powerful and moving story of St. Patrick. I highly recommend this movie to all those looking for inspiring family entertainment.

Vanished (2001) Review

(More customer reviews)I have watched all of Cloud Ten's end time movies. While none of them were stellar, this one was abysmal. It seemed like it was John Hagee's effort to showcase himself, more than anything else, by calling it a documentary. It was a bottom dweller when it came to production values, using recycled clips from Apocolypse more than new footage. It completely lacked both plot and character development. If it was to be a documentary, then it should have had some scripture to it. If Hagee's preaching is as lean on scripture as this film is, then I think I will skip ever watching that the same as I advise skipping this waste-of-time. There are plenty of halfway decent films out there for sharing with friends about the end times, but this one is totally worthless.

A Thief in the Night (1972) Review

(More customer reviews)This movie is important in that it began the whole Christian apocalyptic genre. In 1972 Thief in the Night was cutting-edge church drama. Of course the acting seems a bit stiff, the dialogue forced, the message delivered without a hint of sublety. However, this effort served as a catalyst for the many sophisticated media presentations of a popular Christian view of how the world as we know it ends (and begins).
I remember seeing Thief in the Night roughly a quarter of a century ago--how it inspired me to greater dedication, and how a number people became serious about their faith for the first time.
Seeing The film today is akin to watching some of the earliest Star Trek episodes. The dated styles, the archiac technology, and the paper-shuffling government authorities are fun to remember. Yet, in spite of the 30 years that have passed since its production, Thief in the Night's message remains timely.
Perhaps the reintroduction of the Thief in the Night series will garner new appreciation for such modern productions as Left Behind, and the Apocalypse series. Religious producers still do not have the budgets and tools available on the scale Hollywood uses. Nevertheless, meaningful messages are being meaningfully done.
Bottom-line: Thief in the Night will prove most interesting to Christians who came of age in the 70s and 80s. The acting is stiff, but not sloppy. The message lacks nuance, but communicates clearly and realistically. As a pioneer effort in the genre, the movie earns a solid 4 stars.

Meet Prince Charming (1999) Review

(More customer reviews)"Meet Prince Charming" looks like something right out of a Romance Film 101 class. You have two neighbors, Samantha (Tia Carrere) and Jack (David Charvet), who hate each other at the start of the film. Why? Who knows...they never tell us what caused the tension to begin with. They both end up at the same dating service in the quaint little borough of Manhattan, NY. The service they use has a website and both of them immediately find someone online who they like. Neither one knows that they are in reality becoming enamored with the neighbor that they so despise (Imagine that!). Eventually, they go on a blind date and find out that they are actually made for each other (Imagine that again!!). Some of your favorite movie cliches are here too. You know...like the one where somebody tries to stop somebody else from getting married while they are at the altar. Or the one where two people who don't like each other get stuck in an elevator all by themselves. You gotta love it! The best thing of all is the long list of annoying product placements. It's like watching one long commercial. In fact, you should check out the credits and see the list of all the companies who paid to have their products in this film! All in all, the acting of both Carrere and Charvet is competent. I just wish they could find better scripts than boring junk like this.

Even those who don't know them will love the simplistic comedy from the "little people" to the stunt hampsters. This movie is great for all the ages. I recommend this movie to anyone looking for a good comedy movie and a night of laughter.

(More customer reviews)This sensitive documentary chronicles the lives several gender-bending and mind-bending sets of transsexual couples. The central character, who has become a man, is ironically dying of ovarian cancer. He was repeatedly refused treatment by the medical establishment because of his identity as a transsexual. The unconventionality of these individuals is touchingly contrasted with their fight for basic human rights, and their desire to enjoy the simple pleasures of domestic life taken for granted by most Americans. Despite some petty differences, they achieve compassion, humor, and tolerance in their interractions among themselves and with their "straight" families and friends. The dignity of their struggle brilliantly reveals that it is actually "mainstream" culture which is freakish, both in terms of its outrageous persecution and its irrational phobia of them. The final line of the film really stayed with me (I'm paraphrasing): "Nature delights in diversity, why can't human beings?" I was tempted to give the film five stars but I felt the cinematography could have been more creative and the editing could have been tighter. In terms of content, though, this film has a rare and transformative vision which would merit the highest rating.

The complete book of Acts is brought to life in this film and remaining biblically integral. It really helps with understanding the events of the early church. I am also a hugh fan of black and white films.

The video does not follow the book at all and barely touches on the story. I wish they would have just told the story as it is written. Forget the video, and buy the book.

(More customer reviews)These videos are so clever. They include humor that only an older child or an adult would understand while still having great kid-appeal. This series is truly whole-family viewing material!
In this particular episode, King George (aka Larry the Cucumber) is playing in the bath with his rubber duckie. He has a whole collection of duckies, but he spies a little guy taking a bath with *his* duckie from his window. (Think of David and Bathsheba here) Even though he has plenty of duckies, he wants the little guy's (Junior Asparagus') duckie!
Before the story begins, Jimmy and Jerry gourd try to take Bob and Larry's place introducing the show - with hilarious results!
I guarantee you'll love this video - it's for children of ALL ages!

The Scarlet and the Black (1983) Review

(More customer reviews)Gregory Peck and Christopher Plummer give outstanding performances as Monsr. Hugh O'Flaherty(Peck) and SS Col. Herbert Kapler(Plummer). The action and suspense of the movie keeps it going at a brisk pace. The story follows Peck as a Vatican official trying to save Italian Jews and Allied escaped POW's from the hands of the German SS. Plummers portrayal as Col. Kapler is both chilling and frightening, especially when he personally executes a Catholic priest who was caught helping the Resistance. Peck's portrayal of Father O'Flaherty is very moving to watch. The intelligence and compassion of this man truly shows through and shows how much Father O'Flaherty deserved the awards and decorations he received from the Allies after the war. And the ending is very surprising as well! It is also a plus having the movie shot in Rome where the actual events took place. A truly classic movie. I highly recommend it.
