(More customer reviews)I just purchased this DVD being a fan of Richard Dreyfuss and was excited about seeing this movie because I have heard good things about it. I had to first purchase a Region Free DVD player though because it is not released in Region 1 which is crazy! I know all the hang ups about its release in the US and all but come on!!!!
Anyway, this movie is fantastic and Richard Dreyfuss is amazing in it. I won't go through what it is all about because it is reviewed above. It is a bit of a slow mover but in the end you really get that good feeling from it. This is a different pace for Richard Dreyfuss but he can adapt to every character with ease it seems and does a fine job. I definitely would recommend this film to anyone that can get their hands on it. Right now being that it is not availible in Region 1 it feels special to be able to view this movie and have it in my collection. For any Richard Dreyfuss fans, don't pass up this movie!

Meet Prince Charming (1999) Review

(More customer reviews)"Meet Prince Charming" looks like something right out of a Romance Film 101 class. You have two neighbors, Samantha (Tia Carrere) and Jack (David Charvet), who hate each other at the start of the film. Why? Who knows...they never tell us what caused the tension to begin with. They both end up at the same dating service in the quaint little borough of Manhattan, NY. The service they use has a website and both of them immediately find someone online who they like. Neither one knows that they are in reality becoming enamored with the neighbor that they so despise (Imagine that!). Eventually, they go on a blind date and find out that they are actually made for each other (Imagine that again!!). Some of your favorite movie cliches are here too. You know...like the one where somebody tries to stop somebody else from getting married while they are at the altar. Or the one where two people who don't like each other get stuck in an elevator all by themselves. You gotta love it! The best thing of all is the long list of annoying product placements. It's like watching one long commercial. In fact, you should check out the credits and see the list of all the companies who paid to have their products in this film! All in all, the acting of both Carrere and Charvet is competent. I just wish they could find better scripts than boring junk like this.

Oliver Twist (1997) (1997) Review

(More customer reviews)As others have said, if you want a quality retelling of Dickens' "Oliver Twist," then turn to David Lean or the glorious musical version, and not this bland re-hash with possibly the weakest Oliver (not to mention writing and direction) that I have ever seen for this story. There are only two characters that partially redeem it: an earthy, maternal Nancy and an Artful Dodger that, as portrayed by Elijah Woods, may not be what Dickens had in mind, but certainly becomes someone you care about and want to save - much more so than the annoying Oliver, who has two facial expressions (wide-eyed and not wide-eyed), a shrill voice, and an unhealthy obsession with his mother's locket, which stalls the plot at the most unlikely moments. The double irony is that this rather stupid, greedy child (who discovers a conscience quite late) is rescued from the streets to enjoy a life of ease and comfort, while the infinitely more promising Artful Dodger (whose tender response to Oliver's bout of conscience is the most moving two minutes in the film) is carted off to jail - a quip from him being enough to stop this Oliver making any move to save him! It's enough to make you want the REAL film buried here - the one about Woods' Artful Dodger, caught between confused loyalties, sensitive and intelligent in a world merciless to both, protective of both Nancy and Oliver but powerless to help either, trying desperately to seem more callous than he is and to pretend to himself that he has chosen this life.... It's his tragedy that is almost buried in this dull film, but it's hard not to be grateful it was made, if only for those scenes lit from within by Woods' amazing talent.

Leaves of Grass (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)Leaves of Grass isn't a movie that you can easily categorize. While it doesn't offer up laughs every few minutes, it's still a clever comedy in the vein of a Coen Brothers film. But you also can't quite call it a black comedy completely in the spirit of Burn After Reading or Fargo. It's equal parts crime drama, humor, romance and philosophy.
The film revolves around the intertwining lives of two identical twins, played by the incredibly talented Edward Norton. Ivy League philosophy professor Bill Kincaid is lured back to his Oklahoma hometown as part of a scheme cooked up by Mary Jane growing brother Brady. The first half hour of the film moves slowly but quickly gains momentum when the two siblings eventually cross paths.
The best part of this movie is easily watching Norton put on brilliant performances as both brothers. The supporting cast is top-notch as well, especially director Tim Blake Nelson in the role of Bolger, Brady's partner in crime. Nelson slips into the role effortlessly, which is no surprise considering he himself is a real-life Okie (a Jewish one at that, which influences a subplot of the movie). My only gripe with casting was Richard Dreyfuss as Jewish gangster Pug Rothbaum, with Dreyfuss giving one of the most bizarre attempts at a Southern accent in film.
I enjoyed the cinematography, Jeff Danna's work on the score, and the infusion of philosophy into the film. As a Southerner, I appreciated the fact that Brady's accent was no reflection on his intelligence. While not as well-read as his sibling, he still gets the occasional profound message across. The only real complaint I have about the film are the jarring scenes of violence. Considering it's not entirely a dark comedy, scenes that involved murders seemed extremely out of place in this movie.
Overall, watching Edward Norton effectively tackle two completely different roles was a real treat. If you enjoy a good drama or comedy that makes you think, definitely check this one out.
