El Niño y el Lobo (Spanish only) Review

El Niño y el Lobo (Spanish only)
Average Reviews:

Being dyslexic myself, I identified strongly with the main character of this short movie. I was picked on very much the same way he was, and suffered similar emotions. I agree with the preceding reviews that it should be MANDATORY viewing for all PK-8G teachers and administrators. I also especially liked the visuals in the background, but I don't want to give that away to those who have not seen it. That was the best part of the movie (for me) and was a very cleaver visual device.
The lead actor and the actress portraying his mother were great, but I found the rest of the cast stilted or too stereotypical. That may be more the fault of the writing than the fault of the actors, but it came off as amateurish.
Also, kids with dyslexia and other learning disabilities may excel at other activities other than reading and school work (math, art, sports, music, woodworking, sewing, scouting) and while there was a passing reference that he was good at math, none of his "victories" or "strengths" were depicted until the end of the movie. A kid with learning disabilities will often try to cover-up that fact by spending his/her time doing those things in which they excel and therefore gain acceptance from their parents and peers. But, since this movie was short, and had a focused message, that side was never explored or depicted.
The tags associated with this movie were wrong and inappropriate. This is not a "coming of age movie" and there is no sexual innuendo or nudity of any sort. Those references in the tags should be deleted.

David Copperfield (2000) Review

David Copperfield (2000)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A sumptuous, wonderful adaptation; unexpectedly and disarmingly excellent.
I was a little hesitant going into this: having read the novel a couple of times and declared it my own, I had long fondly imagined the scenes and characters without any need for assistance, thank you very much.
Consequently, I felt the way many Tolkien fans must have felt before those three recent movies came out: leery that my coveted imaginings would be sullied by what might prove to be a jarrring and irreversible contamination.
These fears were misplaced, however. The full vitality of Dickens's bittersweet classic -- all the heaping joys and sorrows of life -- comes through quite powerfully in this handsome BBC version. After about 25 minutes I was literally on the edge of my seat.
Oh, and speaking of this version: they spent some money on it, you'll be happy to know. It's not one of those innumerable stuffy BBC dramas that take place (for budget considerations if nothing else) in an intolerable series of drawing rooms and antechambers. No, they did this one right: the blokes went outside and built some proper sets, and it shows.
Yes, though fully prepared to dislike it, I find myself here with little ammunition for complaint. I wish Traddles hadn't suffered deletion; he is one character I have difficulty picturing and could have used some help. Also, the actress who played Dora was not exactly my conception of her . . . but this is nitpicking.

The classic David Copperfield was not just Charles Dickens' favorite work. It has been the most popular of his books since it was first published 150 years ago. Micawber, Peggotty, Betsey Trotwood, Uriah Heep, Mr. Creakle, Mrs. Crupp, and Mr. Dick... never were so many of Dickens' famous and vest-loved characters gathered together in just one of his works. They are all brought to life by a world-class cast including Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone), Oscar-winner Maggie Smith (The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie), Bob Hoskins (Hook), Nicholas Lyndhurst (Bullshot) and Pauline Quirke (The Elephant Man) in this sparkling adaptation. The most autobiographical of Dickens' work, David Copperfield often echoes the writer's own life. It tells a moving story of David's journey from birth to maturity, a journey which inextricably links his life with some of Dickens' most colorful and extraordinary families.Special DVD features include: Cast list; Masterpiece Theatre poster gallery; access to David Copperfield Web site featuring production notes, interviews with the cast and crew, a Dickens timeline, a guide to the featured characters, and more; scene selection; English audiotrack; and closed captions. One one DVD9 disc.Region coding: All regions.Audio: Dolby stereo.Screen format: Widescreen (Anamorphic)

Far From Home: The Adventures of Yellow Dog (1995) Review

Far From Home: The Adventures of Yellow Dog (1995)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A teenage boy named Angus (Jesse Bradford) gets lost after he and his dad were involved in a major boat crash during a storm at sea. Now it's up to Angus to survive in the vast woodlands with sea all around him, but fortunately, he is keen on survival skills. But that's not all. Not only does Angus have two GREAT parents (Mimi Rogers and Bruce Davison) who refuse to give up on searching for him, he has a new pet dog, Yellow, that stays alongside him and helps tremendously by providing courage and companionship.
"Far From Home - The Adventures of Yellow Dog" is a GREAT movie. Many critics scorched the film by saying that it's predictable and a little cliched. Maybe it is, but so what!?! It's a great family drama that the whole family can sit and watch together time and time again and it's one movie that never gets old.
I don't know about everybody else, but I think "Far From Home - The Adventures of Yellow Dog" is an all-around great movie in every way. Mimi Rogers and Bruce Davison do a spectacular job of acting as great parents would in that situation, Yellow (Dakotah) is a smart dog that has a likable charm, and everybody else in the film does a good job of acting. Just as great is the film itself. There are parts full of suspense, feel-good sequences, and yes, you guessed it, parts that are tear jerkers. Not to mention that a perfect musical score is also included to give "Far From Home - The Adventures of Yellow Dog" an even higher boost.
I've always been a huge fan of almost any kind of drama movie, and the ones about survival are one of my favorite genres of drama. If you want a great family drama to add to your collection, if you're a dog lover, or if you like great survival or drama films in general, do yourself, your family, or whoever a huge favor and purchase "Far From Home - The Adventures of Yellow Dog" today! You will NOT regret it! I hope they make a DVD version of this movie one day.

I enjoyed this film. The director throws in a monkey-wrench once in a while, changes the plot and surprises you. A bit crazy when the aliens and the robot enter the story. Obviously dubbed from the Spanish. I'm giving this 4-stars.

Three young brothers from Rio (Mario, Paco and Diego ) journey into the Amazon rain-forest with their not-so-normal uncle to help their grandfather save the planet from alien slavery. The boy's parents aren't too fond of the idea. In fact,Uncle Manuelo's last escapade landed them on the front page of the newspaper. Part adventure, as the boys soon become lost in the jungle and almost die of dehydration.Part sci-fi, as they are kidnapped by smugglers while tracking an alien robot and stowaway on their spacecraft in a thrilling climax to save the planet.Live action with 5-minutes of animation at the end of the film.

Al Otro Lado (2004)

This is a poignant, artistic and insightful movie perfect for Spanish classes for a lot of it is in Spanish, but for other classrooms as well. It delves into the lives of three young children whose fathers have left their countries in search of work or better opportunities and in a candid way shows the pain and desolation of those left behind. It also depicts the lengths that a child will go to in order to be reunited with his/her father.
Sad, but realistically beautiful!

Jack Frost (1998) Review

Jack Frost (1998)

This movie is a bit of a departure for Michael Keaton.. 1. It's a family movie, that younger kids will really click to. 2. Michael Keaton also sings a few tunes in his rock band, I found that a biut interesting.
The whole story revolves around a Father, and his son. The father never has enough time for his child,, and dies suddenly in a car wreck. Michael Keaton come back to Earth as a Snowman, and find that he has to spend some time with his boy. Winter doesn't last forever though, and it does have a sad ending.

The Quest (1986) Review

The Quest (1986)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The plot in brief: young Cody, played by Henry Thomas of E.T. fame, is a brilliant and inventive youngster living with a family friend in Australia after he is orphaned. After he discovers the body of a man who appears to have died of utter terror at an old, abandoned, flooded quarry, he begins to investigate rumours the waters hide a Loch Ness-like monster the locals call the Donkigen. With the help of his friends and a mysterious Aborigine named Charlie Pride, he ends up solving the mystery -- albeit at the risk of his own life.
By American standards, this film is very slowly paced and very innocent, which will no doubt lead to many bad reviews in this venue. If one is willing simply to sit back and let the film happen, as one must with many non-American films, one gains more appreciation for it. The opening sequence is a text-book example on how to create tension, at least, as is the underwater sequence when Cody goes exploring, and the whole is nicely filmed. What I especially liked is the balance between the rational and the magic; Quest constantly appears to be on the edge of the supernatural, only to pull back to a realistic point of view -- and yet you never quite lose the feeling that the magic is there, *almost* visible out of the corner of your eye.
Although I have grown fond of this film, I must say in all honesty it is not a great one. Still, it is amiable; the tension, although it never quite sets your heart to racing, is nonetheless very real; and for those with patience, the film does have its rewards. A child spoiled by dazzling special effects and jaded by too many graphic horror movies would probably be very bored by it; but there will be children, and adults as well, who would enjoy it.

I think young kids 6 years old and younger would really like this movie. Little kids love animals, let alone animals they think are talking! OK, it doesn't exactly follow the Rudyard Kiplings "Jungle Book" version, but I think this was suppose to be light and fun for young children to enjoy, not so much for us adults. My kids enjoyed watching this video over and over again.

Acla's Descent into Floristella (La Discesa di Aclà a Floristella) Review

Acla's Descent into Floristella (La Discesa di Aclà a Floristella)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This film was inspired by true events. It's an unflinching exploration of social mores and disturbing sexual practices. It exposes the endless cycle of religious hypocracy and poverty that allowed it to sacrifice generations of children.
Those who toiled in the sulfur mines had no access to their wives and family for 24/6. Both men and boys shared a communal sleeping chamber where the weak were subject to the spector of sexual abuse on and off the job.
The only thing that kept this film from getting 5-stars from me was the dialogue. At times, the dialogue was stiff and it seemed as if the actors were reciting their lines. I would highly recommend this movie for viewing for those who want to understand why conditions that the film presented could exist.

Oliver Twist (1997) (1997) Review

Oliver Twist (1997) (1997)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As others have said, if you want a quality retelling of Dickens' "Oliver Twist," then turn to David Lean or the glorious musical version, and not this bland re-hash with possibly the weakest Oliver (not to mention writing and direction) that I have ever seen for this story. There are only two characters that partially redeem it: an earthy, maternal Nancy and an Artful Dodger that, as portrayed by Elijah Woods, may not be what Dickens had in mind, but certainly becomes someone you care about and want to save - much more so than the annoying Oliver, who has two facial expressions (wide-eyed and not wide-eyed), a shrill voice, and an unhealthy obsession with his mother's locket, which stalls the plot at the most unlikely moments. The double irony is that this rather stupid, greedy child (who discovers a conscience quite late) is rescued from the streets to enjoy a life of ease and comfort, while the infinitely more promising Artful Dodger (whose tender response to Oliver's bout of conscience is the most moving two minutes in the film) is carted off to jail - a quip from him being enough to stop this Oliver making any move to save him! It's enough to make you want the REAL film buried here - the one about Woods' Artful Dodger, caught between confused loyalties, sensitive and intelligent in a world merciless to both, protective of both Nancy and Oliver but powerless to help either, trying desperately to seem more callous than he is and to pretend to himself that he has chosen this life.... It's his tragedy that is almost buried in this dull film, but it's hard not to be grateful it was made, if only for those scenes lit from within by Woods' amazing talent.

My class of fifteen "learning disabled" students read the book "Freak the Mighty". These are at risk students who for the most part, could care less about reading anything. They absolutely loved the book! Every day at bell time I would hear, "No, we can't stop here!" Some even wanted to take the book home and read ahead! While watching the film, I noticed some 6th grade boys with tears in their eyes and the girls were simply dissolved in tears. This is a wonderful movie for people of all ages but particularly for those kids who sometimes feel like they walk in Max and Freak's footsteps every day. We also read the sequel, "Max the Mighty" and found it equally as absorbing. We are hoping there is a movie sequel! Thank you Rodman Philbrick for writing such a beautiful, memorable story! Kudos to the cast of "The Mighty" for their performances.I intend to buy a copy for myself and several for gifts.

Flipper (1963) Review

Flipper (1963)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I grew up watching the Flipper TV series and it was always one of my favorites, so I couldn't wait to see the original movie that's humbly called "Flipper." It shows how Flipper earned his name and how he met his best friend named Sandy.
I liked this movie, but I don't like it as much as I like "Flipper's New Adventure." You won't see Flipper make any rescues this first time around, and he doesn't have the same 'voice' as he has in the series, but you will see the smart dolphin do plenty of tricks and show that he had a huge brain even in his first outing.
If you've ever liked the TV series or even if you haven't ever seen it, but you like dolphins or just good movies, I recommend getting "Flipper." It'd probably be especially good for kids of any age to watch, and possibly a good family movie. To make it short, it'd be a good buy.

E.T. - The Extra-Terrestrial (2-Disc Widescreen Limited Collector's Edition) (1982)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let me explain something that I feel a lot of people are forgetting. This set doesn't only include the new version, but the old as well. That's a great deal, since you can choose which one you would like to see. If you hate the new effects and CGI, don't watch it. It's that simple.
Now don't get me wrong. I think the newer version is very silly, and I wonder if Spielberg really thought it looked good when he did it. Maybe if he were to do it in around 10 years, it wouldn't look so animated.
I did like the deleted bathroom scene though, even though it was done with CGI. It would have been nice to have seen that in the original, but I guess that would be having my cake and eating it too.
There is nothing flawed about this set, it simply just gives some options that not everyone will want to choose. If you enjoy the movie, you will enjoy this set. It's a classic that hasn't lost it's flavor after all these years.

Father Hood (1993) Review

Father Hood (1993)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This very humorous and touching movie is about a self-centered hood, who is just days away from pulling off the biggest hiest of his life, when his big plans are unexpectedly hindered by his 2 children who are suddenly back in his care. The fact that his kids have had a bad experience in foster care does not make this movie hard to take as a comedy, but it allows the viewer to see that even a hood will try to do right by his kids, although in his own way. The conflict facing the father is that of being content with his life of crime and having no kids around to hinder that lifestyle, but at the same time, loving his kids enough come to their rescue when he learns they were mistreated in foster care. The kids long for their father to be "a father" to them while it is clear that his primary concern is for himself and that the lifestyle he has been used to for years, has no room for kids. This situation is portrayed brilliantly by all of the actors involved. So, what is funny about this movie? For one thing, the irony of having a father being the mischievous kid-like charachter getting into trouble while his children are down to earth, seeking a stable family life, but the humor in the movie is very compentently mixed with the problems faced by the kids, which are never made light of. Secondly, the very presense of the kids is disruptive to the father's lifestyle, which he sees as being more important than his role as father. His utter love of self, in contrast to his kids love of their dad ("Don't call me that!") is presented in such a way as to merge conflict and confrontation with a faint hope throughout, that they just might make it as a family one day.
