How lucky was I that on the same day Bruce Campbell's "My Name is Bruce" came out that the long awaited DVD release of the Sci-Fi channel classic "Terminal Invasion" also starring Bruce came out. I have had this movie recorded on vhs for ever, since it debuted on the Sci-Fi Channel years ago. So of course we watched this movie as part of our marathon that ended with "My Name is Bruce", this one right before it since I bought them at the same time. Now I must say that this is a classic with out a doubt but I mean that in the sense that it is a classic for the Sci-Fi Channel, think about it this film had a low budget and also was restrained by being a TV movie. So with that said for a TV movie this is by far a classic in my mind
Deep in the mountains a car is pushing threw a snow storm trying to reach its destination in time, the reason is they are carrying a convict [Campbell] and transporting him to another prison. While driving they crash into a tree and are forced to find shelter else where, the find a small airport full of people who are stuck waiting for the storm to pass. Naturally they are not happy that they are in the company of a convicted murderer, still they must deal with it. Once everything is set up we meet a preacher who talks with the cops and prisoner in the bathroom but all is not what it seems, turns out the preacher is a creature [that rhymes] from another planet. Of course after he kills the guards are reluctant hero [Campbell] kills the alien, naturally all the people there swear he killed them as there is no trace of the preacher [they disintegrate after they die]. So from here the movie goes into a kind of who is who type film since no one knows who else could be an alien, of course that is after the witness them for them selves. So they all must survive the night and each other in order to make it out alive, if they can trust each other.
I love the story behind this film it really is an entertaining plot and keeps you guessing as well as to who is who. Writers Lewis Abernathy, John Jarrell, and Robinson Young should be credited for their story line because it really is quite good. Sure the dialogue could use some work and some of the characters seem flat, but hey this is a Sci-Fi Channel made for TV movie. Also director Sean S. Cunningham who is famous for the original Friday The 13th movie does a good job with this movie and keeps things moving nicely and keeps you guessing on who's who. I can't say enough good things about this movie since I enjoyed so much, sure it is low budget but it is what it is. Sure at times the film doesn't make sense, but I won't give things away. Still this is an enjoyable movie that even with its flaws makes for a good time.
Bruce Campbell of course does a great job as Jack the convict who must rise up to help them make it through the night. He gives another great performance on another low budget flick that honestly may not have been as good with out him, ok it would not have been. Kedar Brown also turns in a good performance as Darian and that is all I can say on him, can't ruin it. C. David Johnson does a good job as well as does most of the other cast but to be honest some of them need to go back to class, hate to say that but it is true. Most of the cast turn in believable performances but the ones who do not know how to make the flat characters come to life struggle. With that said it is still a fun movie that actually is not easy to predict as far as whom are aliens, and that is true.
Over all I really believe that for this type of film this is a classic in that realm, and you should buy it. The DVD comes with a wonderful commentary from director Sean S. Cunningham and executive producer Chuck Simon, both speak not only of the film and the actors but also what everyday people can do now a days to get into the business and learn. This was a wonderful film and a classic Sci-Fi flick, come one and all and purchase this film.

Paradox of the Andes (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)The paradox of the title is that the equator is supposed to be the warmest place on Earth, but the higher one is in altitude there, the colder it is. A subplot is that there are no distinct seasons there, but in 24 hours, it can go from below zero to scorching hot. This doc looks at the animals who live there. (It's implied that humans wouldn't live there.)
Vicunas, animals that must be related to llamas, only give birth in the day because a newborn couldn't survive the cold night. Hummingbirds can flap their wings 20 times per second. There is only one bear species in South America and it is not a carnivore. Both males and females incubate condor eggs. Some plants are so deep that frogs can rest in the ponds they make. This documentary is full of insightful facts.
The work says the equator is the most biodiverse place. It goes on to discuss many mammals, plants, and birds that live there. Close to nothing is said about fish and insects. Perhaps the those animals aren't as diverse as the others. However, I wonder if this were Jungian and the documentary makers know that most humans don't care to see insects.
This would be a great thing to watch in a biology class. It reminded me of how most featurs on living beings have a reason for being there. This might be the type of thing that the Discovery Channel or PBS would show all the time. Still, I enjoyed it. Thumbs up!

Scary Movie 3.5 - Special Unrated Version (Dimension Collector's Series) (2003) Review

(More customer reviews)I wondered when I watched the trailer for Scary Movie 3 why I was laughing so hard.Sure I enjoyed the first two films, but they seemed... amateurish. Yeah, I know the entire series is nothing but crass, low-brow humor, but that trailer was SO funny. I found myself on the Internet Movie Database (http://www.imdb.com) trying to figure it out. Much to my surprise, I found David Zucker (one of the three masterminds behind Airplane!) directing and writing AND Kevin Smith producing and writing the film. Zounds!
I don't know why or how the Wayans brothers aren't involved, but frankly it's for the better. The movie is absolutely hilarious. Oh sure, there are jokes so obvious they are like seeing a jumbo jet landing in your front yard, but there are also enough surprises that catch you off guard to more than make up for that.
The "plot" purees The Ring, Signs and Eight Mile into a mismatch of parody and slap-stick well enough that you wish the Zuckers and Jim Abrahams would get back together and come up with one more. This is mostly for two scenes that sustain laughs so long they actually hurt. Don't get me wrong. This nothing more than stupid, sophomoric humor, but when in the hands of talented comedic film makers, it becomes a film that demands repeated viewings much like Airplane! and Top Secret. In other words, a laugh riot.

Scooby Doo: Alien Invaders (Std) (2000) Review

(More customer reviews)You wouldn't think anyone could come up with anything new for Scooby Doo, but amazingly, the movies released in the last few years have done just that, and been pretty good.
Scooby Doo and the Alien Invaders is brilliantly made to appeal to adults, in ways children won't catch. For instance, there's a very subtle visual indication at the beginning of the movie that Fred and Daphne are actually sleeping together, but it's so mild no kid could possibly realize it. Velma's closing line has a similar bit of business that will have adults laughing out loud, but no one under high-school age would even notice. There's a calculated cutaway from a scene where a character describes his supposed alien abduction, exactly when it is obvious (to an adult) he is discussing - er, a "delicate" personal probe.
Funniest of all, though, is Shaggy and Scooby simultaneously falling in love - with a cute '60s hippie chick, and her dog. Shaggy shaves his trademark scraz, combs his hair, and actually dresses up. He sings a wonderful love-fantasy song that expertly parodies Sonny and Cher's "I Got You, Babe," which will definitely have you laughing yourself off your chair if you've ever been a fan of either Scooby Doo characters or 1960's music. It's just very funny.
Following the lead of other recent Scooby movies, the gang find themselves up against not only the usual crooks in masks, but actual aliens as well, all in pretty clever style. And, just as former entries in this cartoon movie series have included vocals by recognized artists, Jennifer Love Hewitt gets into this one's act by singing the theme song. This one isn't quite as good as Scooby Doo and the Witch's Ghost, but it's well worth watching - especially for the adults, but kids will love it too.

Independence Day (1996) Review

(More customer reviews)I have to say that I'm a big fan of this film, and I already own the DVD. Most of those wanting to buy this film on Bluray are those who have already seen it and liked it, so I won't comment on the movie content itself, but rather the technical and supplemental aspects of this release.
I borrowed a friend's copy of the BD version of ID4 just a few weeks ago, as I was contemplating whether to add this to my small but growing blu-ray collection. The picture and audio are superb, and watching this on my new LCD at 1080p with the lossless DTS-MA audio track really transported me back to the July of '96, when I watched this on the big screen. This movie has certainly aged well these thirteen years, and the special effects are still terrific even today. While watching, I was pretty much set on adding this to my collection.
That is, until after I finished watching the movie and wanted to see the extras in HD.
The DVD version I have contains two discs and a lot of extras, including an alternate ending, making-of feature, trailers, and cast/crew interviews. Sadly, in this BD release there are none, not even in standard definition. The only "extra" is a commentary track, which, as an another reviewer already pointed out, is laughably outdated. At $25, I would expect more than just a movie and nothing else.
The Dark Knight BD had two discs plus a digital copy for the same price- that was justifiable, even in this economy. This... isn't.
FOX is notorious for double-dipping their DVD and Blu-ray releases. I would imagine that a two-disc or dual-layered "special edition" version will come out over the next year or so.
Needless to say, this BD release is quite a disappointment.

AVP - Alien vs. Predator / Aliens vs. Predator - Requiem (Unrated Two-Pack) (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)Having recently watched AVP Requiem on Bluray I ended up really disappointed with this version. Being a fan of the first film (I'm among the few probably) I highly enjoyed the 2nd one in that it really pays homage to the old Aliens and Predator films, lots of violence, much better creature FX than the first AVP film and just a truer representation of the Aliens and Predators really makes this a fun film to sit through, BUT something happened with the Blu-ray release of this film. First the Unrated edition on Blu-ray is missing footage that the Unrated regular DVD has and 2nd, the movie is insanely dark. Having seen this at the theater when it was released I know for a fact that the movie was NOT this dark, something must have happened in the transfer process but unless this movie is watched in total darkness its almost impossible to see A LOT of the film, even the HD trailer on the SAME DISC is brighter, clearer and easier to see. I emailed FOX about these problems and I got a simple reply in that "We are looking into this issue but do not have a solution yet" So obviously there is a problem and I hope the institute an exchange.
Besides this the first AVP looks good, the visuals in Paul Anderson's films have always been great, whether you are a fan of his work is another story ;)
In either movie dont expect top notch performances from the human cast, neither movie is great on that front but I dont think you are watching these movies for oscar worthy performances anyhow.

Bikini Girls From the Lost Planet (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)Oh boy! Another bikini movie from Retromedia. And it's a good one. It reuses a classic B movie plot that never gets old. A planet populated entirely with women sends two cute, scantily clad girls to Earth to find virile men that can be brought back and used to insure the survival of their race.
There are seven sex scenes. Four are boy/girl. One is girl/girl. One is boy/girl/girl/girl. And one is boy/girl/boy/girl. The women are all hot and include veteran bikini girls Nicole Sheridan and Beverly Lynn, as well as some new faces: Christine Nguyen, Syren, Michelle Lay, and Rebecca Love. All the women do a great job during their sex scenes. Unfortunately, Rebecca doesn't have a sex scene is this movie, she just stands around topless.
Extras include some bloopers and trailers for other Retromedia bikini movies.
I recommend this one.

Out of the Blue - The Definitive Investigation of the UFO Phenomenon Review

First of all, everything is up to date and there is excellent footage of UFO's and modern computer simulations where video of sightings are not available. Forget the blurry blobs of the past. Feast you eyes on relatively sharp images and clear shapes in colour.
Secondly, it makes use of old footage of statements made by Government officials during the late forties and fifties to great effect. Each statement on it's own seems insignificant but when many such statements are seen together it soon becomes clear that something "funny" is going on. By the end you'll realise that the government position is a joke. How stupid do they think we are?
Thirdly, this documentary is suitable for skeptics and those who know little about the subject. You will be informed about the origins of the "flying saucer" phenomenon and where it's at now. A case will be presented in which the evidence cannot be denied. Only a fool would persist in saying there is nothing to it. People who believe in the existance of extra-terrestrial life will get a lot out of it as well. You may feel like shouting "See - I told you so!".
Another interesting point is that this documentary covers the religious aspect and interviews two theologians to great effect. What they have to say is fascinating.
This is easily the best UFO documentary I have seen and I commend its creators. They have presented the evidence in a professional and exhaustive manner. The DVD contains a 1 hour bonus entitled "UFO's Fifty Years of Denial" which is also excellent. I cannot recommend this DVD highly enough!

Emmanuelle in Space: A World of Desire (1999) Review

(More customer reviews)This DVD was an improvement over First Contact. It has more humor and best of all more Krista Allen. People who were disappointed with FC because Krista Allen was hardly in it will love this DVD because she's featured quite a lot in this one.
I know of at least 4 scenes that appear on this DVD that I've seen bouncing around the internet and there are even more KA scenes on this disk.
Of course this video is a continuation of the story started in FC. Emanuelle is helping a group of aliens try to understand sex and love. The quirky humor that was in the first one is even better on this DVD. I also thought there was a more coherent story that makes its point clearly at the end.
The only extras on this disk are bare bones ones. There are bios for some of the cast and Roger Corman. The "trailer" for the film and for a couple of others by the same company are included.

(More customer reviews)Let me explain something that I feel a lot of people are forgetting. This set doesn't only include the new version, but the old as well. That's a great deal, since you can choose which one you would like to see. If you hate the new effects and CGI, don't watch it. It's that simple.
Now don't get me wrong. I think the newer version is very silly, and I wonder if Spielberg really thought it looked good when he did it. Maybe if he were to do it in around 10 years, it wouldn't look so animated.
I did like the deleted bathroom scene though, even though it was done with CGI. It would have been nice to have seen that in the original, but I guess that would be having my cake and eating it too.
There is nothing flawed about this set, it simply just gives some options that not everyone will want to choose. If you enjoy the movie, you will enjoy this set. It's a classic that hasn't lost it's flavor after all these years.

Dan Aykroyd Unplugged on UFOs (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)While it's true that I found the production value lacking, I hate to see this video maligned by people with short attention spans and fragile egos. You must consider Akroyd's motivation in doing this. It's not for fame or fortune; he already has that. He risks credibility and marketability with this project; yet proceeds, albeit calmly, to express sincere belief in these " vehicles" moving in our atmosphere ( and just outside of it, too. ) I particularly found the infra-red footage very compelling. Strangely, no reviewer has mentioned it. Perhaps they turned it off too soon. ( There are, after all, no explosions or MTV-like editing tricks to hold your interest. ) There are many who found "March of the Penguins" boring and failed to consider the implications of that film as well. But for those seriously trying to understand our world and the times we live in, this video is an excellent wake-up call and jumping-off point for further study of higher technologies, alternative histories and our future. Decide for yourself. Don't let somebody else decide what is or isn't significant for you. ( That seems to be a common motif in our world now. ) Those with an open and inquisitive mind will be highly entertained to say the least, and maybe even profoundly affected.

RoboCop Trilogy Review

(More customer reviews)I already have the Robocop Trilogy on DVD. I bought this blu-ray version of the box set because I was expecting to see an improved High Definition re-master. And it's not. This transfer to Blu-Ray looks no better than the DVD's. So, it's a waste of money, isn't it?
So, I've done a little research of some of my other re-purchased films on to Blu-ray (from MGM) and I've noticed that they too, were disappointments to me as a blu-ray transfer. So, I know now: If it's released by MGM, it won't be any better than the DVD. MGM just doesn't seem to care WHY we would re-purchase our favorite movies on to Blu-ray.
The first Robocop in this box set is the same 2007 release. They didn't even bother to change the brownish artwork of the disc to match the other two movies bluer artwork. And of course, there are no extras on any of these discs.
With the HDMI cable I had with my older regular DVD player, many of my regular DVD's were greatly improved in picture quality. So, it's proving to be very few and far between that a Blu-ray reissue of a film is actually going to look any better. Some do. I have about 75 Blu-Ray discs now, and only about 45 of them look greatly improved. (When I buy the Blu-Ray, I compare them right away, side by side, Blu-Ray against the DVD, with my two TV's in my den) I guess some movies can't be helped, while some other movies were great masters from the start so no re-mastering effort would be required.
I outta just re-cellophane this Robocop Blu-Ray and give it to somebody for Christmas because my DVD's are just as good anyway. MGM? Again, thanks for nothing. Thanks for wasting my money. So, never again.

War of the Worlds - The Complete First Season (1988) Review

(More customer reviews)The War of the Worlds t.v. series came at an interesting time in television history. In 1988, more and more shows were being directly released in syndication, effectively side-stepping the big networks (and thus big network costs). I've read that some people saw this on Saturday afternoons, but my Fox affiliate carried it on Friday nights (the well-known graveyard for good sci-fi).
As a huge fan of the original 1953 film, I was delighted that the series paid tribute by incorporating footage of that film into its opening credits, as well as a recurring role for that film's female lead, Ann Robinson as Sylvia Van Buren. The last primetime alien invasion series had been the late, lamented "V." And War of the Worlds owes as much to that series as to its source film and novel.
It's universally acknowledged that the first season was far superior to the second, which changed the format and killed off 2 of its stars in its first episode. But the first year was pretty solid, detailing the government-sanctioned battle against alien invaders by a small group of people. Jared Martin as Harrison and Richard Chaves as Ironhorse were standout performers. True, the syndicated format allowed for some occasionally over-the-top effects (similar to Freddy's Nightmares, also syndicated at the same time; and prefigured the X-Files more graphic scares five years later), which I recall being a turn-off to some fans of the original film. But War of the Worlds was an action-packed sci-fi series, and one that deserves another look.

The Forgotten (2004) Review

(More customer reviews)I've heard the critics and I've read the viewer feedback and I'm still scratching my head. The most common thing I've heard was that people expected it to be a different kind of movie and were let down at what it turned out to be. Obviously these people either didn't see the trailer or didn't give it any thought.
The trailer sets up the premise, and the only way someone seeing it could imagine it playing out would be as either: 1) a psychological thriller, 2) an alien abduction movie, 3) a supernatural thriller. Given what's revealed in the trailers, those are pretty much the only options. If you go to the movies often, you probably saw the trailers more than once, in which case it doesn't take any great deductive powers to figure out exactly what it's going to be.
From this point on, there may be spoilers!
OK, a bit more on the trailer(s)... We see that Julianne Moore's character has lost a son and that people around her have apparently forgotten he ever existed. Next we see that pictures have been altered. At this point, the options are still open. Next we see her ripping the wallpaper and revealing to Dominic West's character that he, too, had a child who apparently died. A few moments later, we see her in official custody with him shouting through the window that he remembers. Since we have two people with shared memories of people who weren't supposed to have ever existed, the psychological thriller plot line is eliminated. This has to be some sort of conspiracy, whether supernatural, alien or pod people. The shots in the trailer aren't creepy enough for a supernatural plot, so that pretty much leaves some sort of aliens. Duh!
Knowing this, I went to see it with suitably calibrated expectations. As with all such plots, there were holes and lapses in logic, but surprisingly fewer than I would have expected. Julianne Moore gives a typically excellent performance and the other parts are well cast and performed. I must admit my wife had the nature of Gary Sinese's character nailed while I was still undecided about him.
Altogether, not a great flick, but certainly a lot better than many people have given it credit for. I enjoyed it, my wife stayed awake through it (a major endorsement!), and I left without wishing for my money or 96 minutes back.

Threshold - The Complete Series (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)"Threshold" reminded me of something Norm from Cheers said in an episode; "It's a dog-eat-dog world and I'm wearing Milkbone underwear". The networks put Milkbone underwear on a lot of their TV shows metaphorically speaking and if they can't get a large audience they get thrown to the dogs. CBS cancelled the show far too soon as the show only aired 8 of its 12 episodes (the pilot was a double length episode). The good news for fans is that when the producers found out the show was being cancelled they were in the middle of shooting the last episode ("Alienville")and this allowed them to rewrite the ending to provide a conclusion (of sorts)to the series.
**Caution some minor spoilers ahead for those who haven't seen the show*** Skip the next three short paragraphs.For those that haven't seen the show the premise is very powerful allowing for suspense and very effective; an alien probe with 4 or 5 dimensional properties shows up. It's signal effects the crew altering their DNA from our normal double helix rewriting the DNA of the crew into a triple helix. It's an alien invasion done by making US the aliens.
Dr. Molly Caffrey (Carla Gugino best known from "Spy Kids" and "Sin City")created a protocol for first contact including hostile first contact. She assembles a team of top notch scientists in their field including Dr. Nigel Fenwya (Brent Spiner of "Star Trek:The Next Generation"); Lucas Pegg (Robert Patrick Benedict from "Felicity") a brilliant physicists and designer for NASA; Arthur Ramsey (Peter Dinklage "Elf" and from the film "Find Me Guilty")a brilliant mathematician and linguist and covert ops agent Sean Vavennaugh (Brian Van Holt from "S.W.A.T." and "Black Hawk Down"). They form the basis with Assistant Secretary of Defense J.T. Baylock (Charles S. Dutton)of "Red Team" whose job is to identify the threat, find out the aliens agenda and neutralize them.
The USS Big Horn's crew is infected with many of them dying while others develop superhuman strength, rapid healing abilities and all share a dream of the alien world and race that wants to "Bioform" humanity and terraform our planet for their own purposes. Suddenly Red Team has an outbreak on their hands and they must capture the sailors before they can infect others. The fact that the sailors choose multiple paths of infection make their job that much more difficult. When various members of their team accidently experience some level of infection it gives them a link to the aliens but also could potential pose a danger to the team.
**End of potential spoilers***
Well written, with top notch acting, writing and direction the show may have suffered from an inconsistent tone as the show was looking to establish its identity but towards the end of the run the show truly did find its voice. Unfortunately the best episodes of the series (the last four) never aired at all and fans of the series are in for a real treat. It's a pity this show wasn't given a chance (the producers had a three year story arc planned out)but what we do get provides for a marvelous and entertaining "mini-series".
The DVD comes with some very nice extras for such a short lived series. We get a four part documentary on the making of the show from the origin of the concept, through casting, the planned story arc and other elements. We also get a good featurette on the visual effects of the show. There's also an Easter Egg. Finally we get a very good featurette with science advisor/producer/writer Andre Bormanis ("Star Trek: The Next Generation") discussing the fractal geometry of the alien "message" that coverted people over and its real scientifici basis. He also discusses real efforts to work on adding a third strand of DNA to the double-helix in labs to modify food, etc. We also get a commentary track on the pilot by producer/director/writer David Goyer ("Blade")and Brannon Braga ("Star Trek: The Next Generation", "Enterprise"). The fact that the show was able to attract some top notch film directors/TV directors (Peter Hyams, Bill L. Norton, David S. Goyer among others) and writers is a pretty good sign of the high quality of the show.
An excellent series "Threshold" was the best of the science fiction shows that appeared in 2005 and one of the best (by its end) of the new crop of shows on the air. It's a pity it was cut short. The show is spread out over four discs and housed in individual slimline cases with two discs in each set.
I'd highly recommend this underrated show that was cancelled far too soon.
