As a producer on this film, I have a unique perspective. I knew the script, I saw the film being shot, and I watched pieces of the editing process. However, it wasn't until we screened the film for an audience that I really got a feeling for the film. The script read like a murder mystery, but as the film played out on screen - there were a number of scenes where the audience ended up laughing. That's when I realized that although meant to be a murder/mystery type of film, it comes across more like a black comedy.
There are some great one liners in the film. 1) Where were you yesterday morning? Wait a minute, it's coming back to me now....I was in bed....with your mother. 2) I've been doing this long enough, that I can smell a murderer, and Mr....You Stink! 3) Sorry? I think we're a little late for sorry! - look at her, she's dead!
When I watch the film in it's entirety, I'm reminded of other black comedy films, such as "The Ice Harvest" with John Cusack and "Fargo".
Give it a try, and all of us at Winter Morning Pictures hope that you enjoy it!
Mike Hamilton

Haunting of Sarah Hardy (1989) Review

Haunting of Sarah Hardy (1989)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This one's a mixed bag--but Sela Ward and Michael Woods are AWESOME in every scene they have together. I wouldn't spend the money that this website is charging for the video, however. Seventy bucks for a made-for-TV movie? Come on. Even the hot, hot theatrical releases don't cost that much on DVD when they first come out. That's gotta be a typo. . .but I digress.
I caught this one on ABCFamily Channel the other night, and while the setting is beautiful and the actors do a great job with the material they're given, something about the whole thing was just. . .off.
Sela Ward--who stands with Jennifer Aniston and Susan Sarandon as one of the most beautiful women in show biz today--has the title role. We also see Roscoe Born--who played Joe Novak in "Ryan's Hope"--as the childhood friend who's always been in love with Sarah and still is, even though she's chosen another man to marry. And Morgan Fairchild--another beautiful lady who, alas, always gets stuck with the second banana, duplicitous friend role. Michael Woods--a man with a very familiar face, maybe from print or TV ads--is Sarah's sexy new husband. (Someone give this man a starring role of his own--he's worth watching!!) Veteran actress and former cosmetics executive Polly Bergen is almost unrecognizable here as a longtime secretary/housekeeper to Sarah's family.
This film is lovely to look at. Most of the action takes place at the mansion where Sarah grew up and has now returned to live as a newlywed. Both Sela and Morgan are elegantly dressed--although Morgan's clothing is always flashier, where Sela's is more understated and everyday elegant. And don't get me started on Michael Woods again--the man is a hunk:)
The problems with this film begin in about the last half-hour to 45 minutes. It seems as though the directors took too much time setting things up, and then had to race to the finish, leaving out some things in the process. At the end of the film, you realize that there are two main characters who simply vanished from the storyline--and this would have been out of character for them, given the established plot. This is a real problem in the final scene, when it's implied that the previous scene happened early in the day and now it's night-time. The character who does not show up in the last scene would have definitely had time to get there and possibly change the outcome. Hello? What happened? Is there something we didn't see on the cutting room floor?
This needs a sequel or to be re-released with the Director's cut. Like I said, it's just out of whack in some way. Again, I wouldn't pay anything to buy or rent it. But next time it's rerun on TV, I would watch that first half-hour or so again just to watch Sela Ward and Michael Woods in the wedding and newlywed scenes. Someone give that man a show of his own!!

I don't think the critics cared much for this film but I remember seeing it when I was younger and thought it was pretty intense. Charlton Heston does a great job with his role. Kim Basinger also does a good job in an early role for her. The story line is tense and leaves the viewer guessing up until the end. I was also very impressed with the locations and the sets used in the film. The scenery of the British Columbia location is impressive and the scenes in the mine set a great tone. All in all I really enjoyed this film and hope to see it re-released in the future.

The Secret (2008) Review

The Secret (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"The Secret" stars David Duchovny as Ben Marris, a successful ophtalmologist who is happily married to Hannah [Lili Taylor of The Haunting]who is a housewife. They have a rebellious 16-year-old daughter Sam [Olivia Thirlby]and from the beginning we can see the antagonism Sam feels towards her over-protective mother. Both mom and daughter head out on a weekend trip and an accident causes both to be critically wounded, eventually resulting in a bizarre occurence in which Hannah's spirit transfers over to Sam's body whilst Sam's spirit lingers somewhere in limbo-land.
The rest of the movie deals with how Ben comes to grips with this bizarre turn of events and how Hannah struggles to cope not only with having lost her material body, but having to try to 'find' her daughter's spirit within Sam's physical self, whislt at the same time traversing the tension-fraught life of a high school teen. Both Ben and "Hannah as Sam" also have trouble dealing with the weirdness of their situation as being deeply in love, they come to certain realisations about the impossible situation they are both in. Ben is torn between wanting to satisfy his and Hannah's emotional and sexual needs whilst not wanting to cross the boundaries presented by his own daughter's material body.
The leads do a credible job of portraying three individuals trapped in an intolerable situation, though it is Duchovny's Ben and Thirlby's Sam that carry the movie for the most part. Olivia Thirlby's performance as Samantha/Hannah is commendable as she portrays both mother and teen credibly. Viewers can really tell when she is playing either mother or daughter. Thirlby is definitely a young actor of promising talent based on this performance.
This is supposedly a remake of a Japanese movie titled Himitsu, and though I haven't watched the original, this movie can stand alone on its own merits. Though it has a supernatural premise, it never really delves too deeply into that aspect for the movie deals more with how individuals cope under strange circumstances. Ben and 'Hannah' do seem to accept the situation way too quickly [which did strike me as very odd], but at 1.5 hrs long, the movie really didn't have the luxury of time to go in depth into the topic of spirit transference/possession.
On the whole, I found "The Secret" to be quite an engrossing drama and well carried by credible acting.
SPOILER ALERT
For those viewers who are very much concerned about the taboo aspects of this movie, i.e. a dad having to deal with a daughter who has her mother's spirit residing within her and the physical issues of dealing with that, do not fret. The movie never crosses the line towards actual physical consummation nor any explicit displays of affection between Ben and "Hannah as Sam".

In the spirit of Ghost and Birth, Hannah and Benjamin (Lili Taylor, Six Feet Under and David Duchovny, The X-Files) are a happily married couple whose love is tested in ways they never could have imagined in this touching supernatural drama. But when Hannah is killed in a car accident, the couple's strong bond may be responsible for an unusual twist of fate that keeps their love alive -- at the expense of their daughter (Olivia Thirlby, Juno).

Monroe: Class of '76 (2005) Review

Monroe: Class of '76 (2005)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Everyone else thinks Pat Fisher was a suicide. Detective Inspector Tom Monroe (Robert Carlyle) isn't so sure. A paranoid, stumbling man, Fisher finally eased his pain one night by running onto a highway into the path of a truck.
In Fisher's room, Tom finds a class photo of a group of 10-year-olds taken in 1976. Fisher had circled three of the children's faces. They were part of a small group of the kids who played together. Then there was the tape recording Tom discovers with Fisher's frightened voice rambling on..."Amy was the first. It happened on a Sunday. She was picking bluebells. The place where they found her was always a favorite. We built our tree house near there then, our sanctuary." With Amy the first in 1976, those whose faces were circled have all died, some when they were adults. Another odd thing; the photo shows 33 children, but there were only 32 in the class of '76. One of the children in the photo is smaller than the others. His face is blurred. Tom, a gloomy sort of lonely man, starts investigating.
Monroe: Class of '76 is a British two-part television mystery that leaves port with great promise and then slowly sinks. At times it seems to take forever to get to the conclusion, which turns out to be a flat, disappointing letdown. The writers created an eerie, intriguing and puzzling story...and then evidently realized they needed to find a way out of the set-up they'd created. They took a hurried, easy and unlikely route. It doesn't help that they had to fill about 150 minutes of screen story time. There's a lot of talk. There's a lot of watching Tom staring off into the distance while he reflects on his own sad issues. There's a major red herring that adds nothing to the plot but eats up time.
Why bother with this? First, Robert Carlyle. This Scot is an outstanding actor. He's not handsome. He's small and on the scrawny side. He's so good and so versatile that he brings interest to just about any movie he's in. He does here. Second, the movie's gloom and eeriness comes through. Monroe: Class of '76 is well photographed and edited. Third, the set-up: People murdered after a class picture was taken of them as school kids...a mysterious additional child in that picture no one seems able to identify...and the murders are continuing. For me, these three elements were hard to resist.
I stayed with the movie to the end. The conclusion, plus the sluggishness, turns the movie to two stars from four. Still, I like Carlyle. I'll make it three stars.

Siren Review

Siren
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Remember the legends in Greek mythology about seductive Sirens who seduce sailors and drive them mad with lust and greed? Well, Japanese director Satoshi Torao attempts to explore this myth in this Japanese pink horror film "SIREN" (a.k.a. Erotic Ghost Siren, 2004) with JAV-superstar Sora Aoi (aka. Sola Aoi) in the lead. The film is a low budget film that was just arguably made for Sora Aoi to show her stuff in her first non-AV role. I liked her in "Man, Woman and The Wall" and "Tsumugi", so I wanted to check out how she fares in a horror movie.
It was the perfect plan as 5 individuals stage the perfect bank robbery dressed as women. None knew of the other's real names and they have taken fake names like: Freddie, Jason, Jaws, Lector and Chucky (cast of Ikki Funaki, Junichi Kawamoto, HideakI Mizuki, Kazuyoshi Ozawa and Yuuken Yoshida). (Horror films anyone?) so that even if one was caught, no one can sell out the rest. After the heist that made them $ 1,520,000; they would go on separate ways after waiting a few days when the heat dies down. But after they stumble upon a beautiful woman named Yumi (Sora Aoi) who was supposed to deliver supplies, they decide to kidnap her after she saw them with the money. They take her to an abandoned goldmine so that they can hide out. The quintet make the decision to keep her around and take advantage of her sexually. But something begins to become amiss as they find one of their number dead and they slowly begin to turn against each other. Little do they know that they are ensnared in the web of a succubus-sea ogre who preys on the greed and lust of men...
"Siren" is a B-movie affair and the film has very low budget sensibilities. There are hardly any special effects and the movie is mostly shot in the woods. I was expecting another of those exploitive pink horror films and while it is, "Siren" isn't actually all that bad. The film serves as a cautionary tale for men who are after riches and the lust for women. I guess this is where director Torao incorporates the mythic tales of a woman who feeds on the lifeforce of greedy and lustful men. An incubus is the demonic counterpart of a succubus who preys on women if you're curious. The men are left quite dehydrated after they have intercourse with our lovely succubus. It does succeed a little, as the characters do have their potential and for a pink horror film, the sex scenes don't exactly take control of every plot device.
This is Sora Aoi's first non-AV role and while her acting is very uneven in this film, I've already seen her mature both in looks and acting ability in "Tsumugi". She is very 'cute' and sexy; I guess it helps that a woman with such girlish features can be a succubus; one look at her, and my male hormones went into overdrive that I wouldn't suspect her as an evil ogre. Sora Aoi gets naked quite often and her nude scenes in the film are the film's main draw. Of course, any pink horror film would have its share of gratuitous sex scenes and "Siren" doesn't disappoint. There are about three sex scenes with lovely Sora Aoi and they are all quite erotic and arousing with the famous trademarks of pink films such as `hand inside the panty shots`. Nope, there are no scenes of full frontal nudity unfortunately but the crotch areas don't' get "fogged" either.
I've mentioned that the film's devices doesn't revolve around the sex scenes and this is true. The film's script instead focuses on the bank robbers who slowly begin to distrust each other. They play poker to see who gets to sleep with Yumi first. They are all taken by their beautiful hostage but they should have found it odd that Yumi never once try to escape; she seemed to be enjoying her situation. The acting by the supporting cast is pretty wooden except for the actor who played Jason, he displayed the most talent out of the five.
Overall, "Siren" isn't really anything special and is very routine; thankfully it doesn`t fall on the usual softcore category played on late night cable. I sure wished that the film could've been more intense and suspenseful, but I guess I shouldn't complain, I knew what I was getting into with "Siren". The film's strengths lie on Sora Aoi as its eye candy and she is definitely a looker. "Siren" isn't a good movie but it is a fun `guilty pleasure' that makes you feel very naughty.
Rent It! But Recommended to fans of Japanese cinema [2 ½ Stars]
The dvd sports a decent letterboxed picture and 2.0 Dolby Digital track with excellent subs. Features are limited to trailers of Switchblade Sisters releases

So..I had some time to kill while doing my laundry and saw this movie was on my ONDEMAND. I decided to take a chance and watch it. I was surprised to be completely entertained through the whole film. There are some points where the acting is a bit overdone and the story does have a few ways it could be improved...but... how many big budget, over advertised, movies have crappy acting and yet make a lot of money just because they are either A) a sequel to a famous franchise (how many Jason movies do we need?) or B)have big name actors. This film is pretty darn good. I believe more movie makers should quit trying to make the next big, arty, trend setting, overly thought out movies and just do what films should REALLY be...a couple of hours of decent entertainment. I beleieve this movie accomplishes just that.

Murder in Coweta County (1983) Review

Murder in Coweta County (1983)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This movie is amazingly good. Originally made for television in 1982, this film is based on the true story of a brutal murder that took place in Georgia in 1948. The production is beautifully directed and shot, and the sets, props, and vehicles look very authentic; above all else the acting is superb from the entire cast.
Playing against his stereotype is Andy Griffith as John Wallace, the "King" of Merriwether County, Georgia. Wallace is a brutal man with an iron grip on the community. The pivotal murder is cleverly staged, but Wallace's fundamental error is to become embroiled in a car chase that takes him into Coweta County, where the murder actually occurs.
In Coweta County the Sheriff is Lamar Potts, portrayed with strength and nuance by Johnny Cash, who refuses to be intimidated by Wallace. The investigation process and courtroom scenes are particularly well done. The climax occurs when Wallace takes the stand in his own defense with an unreal account of the killing.
Particularly noteworthy are the scenes with the psychic, who I knew I recognized, but couldn't put my finger on until the very end of the movie due to the excellent makeup (and acting). The surprise for me was that the psychic was none other than June Carter Cash, who shines in her role. The chilling portrayal by Griffith is amazing, and is visually stunning at the end as his head is shaved and he is strapped to the electric chair. (It's also a visual wake up call to see Johnny Cash in a color other than black.) The entire supporting cast is particularly good.
This is a very powerful movie, not corny or over dramatized: the story and acting are as powerful as any other crime drama I have ever seen. This movie is relatively obscure, but it is worth searching for.
I could not recommend this film more highly.

Yes this may be one of the really bad movies I have ever see.
The trailer has everything of any importance that happens in the movie. The reason that the trailer might indeed be far better than the movie is that there are no fake ear piercing screams.
Yes scream after scream after SCREAM, I stopped counting after 345 screams.
Oh and by the way the cover has nothing to do with the movie nor does the name.

Let Me Die Quietly (2011) Review

Let Me Die Quietly (2011)
Average Reviews:

First off, let me say that I am not really one for low budget independent films, as they tend to disappoint heavily in both story content and acting ability, but being familiar with Charles Casillo's books I threw caution to the wind and decided to give Let Me Die Quietly a shot. I was completely blown away! The film is a well-crafted, phenomenally acted little thriller that builds slowly with each little plot twist and turn until the final shocking moments. Even in big budget Hollywood films, you would be hard-pressed nowadays to find a film with a shred of an original plot device, but Casillo manages to take a genre that has been done to death and injects a ton of originality into this thriller. Kudos to Casillo for a stellar script and storyline that held my interest throughout, as well as for his spectacular, haunting performance as Mario. Dana Perry is also outstanding as Gabrielle. There were several plot twists that I did not see coming at all - I won't give them away here - but for a debut independent film I was extremely impressed by the acting, the writing and the overall production values of everyone involved. I am so glad I took a chance and bought a copy and didn't go the usual route and do the rental thing!

Circus of Horrors/Theater of Death (1967)
Average Reviews:

Here are two gems with two yummy and hot male foreigners! The first film, Circus Of Horrors with the lead male played by Anton Diefring. Diefring plays a totally psychotic and over sexed plastic surgeon that takes over a carnival and subjects his female circus stars to some time under the knife with him. (HA HA) Diefring is a creepy, sexy, cold, megalomaniac intent on making disfigured women beautiful and then having his way with them. A youngish Donald Pleasance (the psychiatrist in the Halloween movies) has a bit part in the film. For the date the movie was filmed in (1960) it is QUITE THE horror/sexploitation film. The second film has Mr. Horror Guru himself, Christopher Lee as a creepalicious, power hungry theatre (of death) director and owner. The special effects are well done and the set of the theatre and Lee's home with secret passageways and the like is top-notch. This is the weaker of the two films, however, but still an enjoyable pic...

Alex and Zoe discover a secret passageway in the public library that leads to a strange and wonderful land. Here all the inhabitants are fully articulate animals who walk upright, wear clothing and understand advanced technology. They are amused at the children's idea that humans are a more evolved species. Welcome to Animalia!
"The Core" is the key to Animalia, a big glowing mass located in the library at the center of the city. When the Core is healthy, there is positive communication and the animals co-exist peacefully. Unfortunately, the Core has cracked, which is causing the citizens to act like ... animals! Alex and Zoe must find the elements necessary to repair the Core and restore peace to Animalia.
There is a strong storyline, which means viewers will eagerly anticipate each episode as the tale unfolds and the action mounts. With the Core in disrepair, the animals are losing their refined personalities, submitting to their instincts instead. For Alex and Zoe, this means Animalia is becoming a dangerous place if they choose to remain.
These videos are absolutely spellbinding. The characters are nicely developed and the illustrations are bright and interesting. Best of all, the animals are hilarious! Each has a wonderfully quirky personality that is not dumbed down for younger children. They are attributed specific accents and mannerisms that had us laughing straight through. We loved every minute of this series!
It should be noted that these videos are intended for children ages 6 - 9, and could be a bit scary for younger children.

Avenger (2006) Review

Avenger (2006)
Average Reviews:

Soft-spoken, hard-eyed, and traveler of a million rough-and-tumble miles, Sam Elliott plays Calvin Dexter, an ex-army special forces warrior who served as a tunnel rat in Vietnam. Armed with a .45 and a flashlight, these guys faced enemies and traps as they wound through miles of underground tunnels. In AVENGER, Dexter is grieving over his daughter's murder and putting his gun out for hire to people who have had loved ones murdered by predators the law won't touch. Contracted by Stephen Edmonds, an affluent businessman, Dexter travels to Bosnia to find out what happened to Edmonds's grown son. Then he has to travel to South Africa and confront a covert op team put into place by the United States to bag his prey.
Sam Elliott is one of those guys you just don't forget. His presence on the screen -- whether as cowboy (THE SACKETTS, CONAGHER), cop (FATAL BEAUTY, SHAKEDOWN), military officer (THE HULK), or hunk (LIFEGUARD) -- leaves a lasting impression. Frederick Forsyth, bestselling author of several thrillers (AVENGER, THE DOGS OF WAR) wrote the book the movie was based on.
I'm a Sam Elliott fan. The man can simply do no wrong in my eyes. I loved him in THE SACKETTS and in MASK (he co-starred with Cher), and I enjoyed him in AVENGER. The made-for-TV movie is a solid piece of work, not like the over-the-top action of "24," but a nice movie to watch and relax while enjoying a story that grips you enough and a character that warms to you. Although the movie doesn't have the frentic pacing of many of today's films, and doesn't rely on a lot of violence or computer generated effects (I love those too, but they are a different venue), it delivers a great story. The scene cuts and movement through the various viewpoint characters is solid as well, pushing the story along quickly.
People who might find Jack Bauer too violent or too unbelievable will probably enjoy AVENGER. And for Elliott's many fans, this is another dependable delivery.

Insomnia (Full Screen Edition) (2002) Review

Insomnia (Full Screen Edition) (2002)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Insomnia, director Chris Nolan's second full length feature, doesn't have the same gut-wrenching and mind-bending plot twists that his feature length debut, Memento, had, but does an excellent job telling an original and gripping detective mystery.
The pleasure of Insomnia is to be found in its rich cinematography, beautiful landscapes, and excellent performances. The movie is one of the most visually compelling pieces of filmmaking I have seen in years, creating surreal juxtapositions with the vast, harsh Alaskan landscape and with close-up shots of crime scene evidence. The amazing visual landscapes (both large and small) are used effectively by director Nolan to emphasize the films themes of isolation and overpowerment, of losing oneself within ones environment and in ones choices.
Insomnia's plot will disappoint those looking for a new Memento, in that it does not have the sort of turns of action and motivation that Memento does. Insomnia works well without elaborate plot twists, however, it's mood benefits from a certain lack of ambiguity of action, although the ending is perhaps a little to predictable and cliched. Insomnia would have benefited, however, from more ambiguity of motivation - while the acting is top notch, especially on the part of Robin Williams, the connections between the characters actions and their motivations and decisions is too closely drawn by the script.
Overall Insomnia is an excellent movie, and a good entry into the detective/suspense movie cannon. It suffers slightly from a couple of bad edits (in a movie filled with amazing editing and shooting) and from its desire to clearly spell out the principle characters motivations, but these minor flaws are more than redeemed by the director's excellent camerawork and sense of pacing, a strong script, and very solid acting performances. Insomnia is a must see movie, and a welcome change from the "blockbuster" summer movie scene of 2002.
