Yoga Class: Flexibility, Fitness, Relaxation Review

Yoga Class: Flexibility, Fitness, Relaxation

I have several yoga DVDs, but since I purchased Gary Bromley's, I've stopped using the others and use only this one. I do this yoga class every morning, and it is the best there is out there. The postures are for beginners but if you are a more advanced yogi and know the postures you can easily deepen and adapt them to make them more challenging (that's what I do). The pace is perfect and the background music complements his guidance very nicely and harmoniously. His style is calm, generous and he pays a lot of attention to details, so if you are distracted he brings your attention gently back to what you're doing, and this awareness of what is actually going on in your body and mind makes all the difference. His voice is very soothing and at the same time upbeat. It really helps me start out my day refreshed, calm and invigorated. Thank you, Gary, for producing this DVD and giving the opportunity to people from all over the world (I live in Brazil) to enjoy your delightful yoga class. Namasté.

Ashtanga, NY - A Yoga Documentary Review

Ashtanga, NY - A Yoga Documentary

The brilliant pacing and sophisticated filming of this documentary only allow the humanity of the characters to come through all the more clearly and touchingly. The potential of community action (here, through the lens of a New York yoga studio and the visit of a master yoga teacher) to guide people through even the most devastating of events comes through as a major lesson of this important documentary. I recommend it to everyone, even or especially those who are not yoga practitioners. Great work!

Transform Yourself with Jivamukti Yoga (2007) Review

Transform Yourself with Jivamukti Yoga (2007)
Average Reviews:

I've been practicing yoga for almost 10 yrs and 4 yrs ago I came to NY on a visit. While I was here, I went to the jivamukti center. I felt like I had finally made it home! However, this dvd falls way short of that experience. First, the good...*the practice itself is very good *I love the music(they have a live band playing) *I love the way it was filmed. But thats about it! I cant tell you how many times I looked up to see what pose they were doing, only to see a musician. This dvd is definately for advanced beginners. I think the more advanced yogi/ini's will be disappointed. I do have to add though, that I moved to NY to study yoga and the classes at the Jivamukti center are second to none! This dvd does not capture that magic or feeling. I hate myself for giving this 3 stars but I think you'll be better off with Bryan Kest Power Yoga or Kundalini Yoga w/ Gurmukh.

Trudie Styler's Warrior Yoga (2009) Review

Trudie Styler's Warrior Yoga (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ok, so I did this dvd this morning and all I can say is "interesting". This dvd is not your typical vinysa yoga class. It isn't challenging but you do get a good stretch without breaking much of a sweat, at least I didn't.
Trudie and her yoga, pilates, dance teacher lead the class outside in lush surroundings. The dvd has an unusual flow in that everything is done on one side (about 24 minutes) and then repeated on the second side. I felt like I had hit repeat segment on my dvd player. The sequence is as follows (might have missed some but basically this is it):
- tadasana to chair, reach out palms and fall forward to standing forward bend; rise to tadasana. Repeat 3x
- child's pose to snake thru to cobra to camel with hands on ankles or floor behind you. Repeat 2x
- cobra to one handed camel. Sweep around to other side and repeat 2x.
- Down dog to one legged split. alternate legs. Repeat 2x.
- one legged split to pigeon.
- Down dog to warrior variation to wide angle pose variations.
- down dog to triangle to extended side angle. 2x
- runners pose (knee on ground) to warrior pose variation to pyramid pose 2x
- standing one legged split to almost seated twist. 3x
- seated twist. one legged twist. bound forward bend. one legged forward bend. wide legged forward bend.
- hands underneath legs holding feet butterly. holding big toes, wide legs in air butterfly.
- plank to downdog to standing to tree.
- Repeat entire sequence on second side.
There is no savasana. No inversions. No backbends except moving camel. No abs. The focus is on the hips and by the time you repeat to the other side, your hips really open up.
The class just ends with a standing centering instruction and then the credits start rolling.
What I liked: The class has a nice dance like feel to it. All the poses flow together. This is a good class for beginners to advanced beginners. It is being sold as intermediate class. The only thing challenging is that you need flexibility in your hips. Otherwise all of the poses are doable. With the camel sequence, I put blocks by my feet to rest my hands on. I would use this class on days when I just want to stretch and not work too hard. I think it would be a great class for those 50 or older. Younger yogis may not be challenged enough. The teacher, in voiceover, has a very nice, soothing voice with precise instruction.
What I didn't like: The camera angles annoyed me in that I couldn't see all of Trudie's body. The camera focused on the top half of her body. Some poses make you face away from the screen and since I didn't know the sequence that well, I had to adjust my feet to see the screen. The class was too simplistic for me. It had great potential but for me it fell short. She could have included more poses, however, as I said earlier this is a class when you just want to stretch and not work hard. Also when the class ends it should go back to the menu instead of rolling credits. The menu has 2 meditations and bonus material which I haven't viewed. Lastly, the introduction is part of the class and should have been separate. As such you have to fast forward to beginning of the class.
There are two classes, 50 minutes and 20 minutes. The express class leaves out the camel and doesn't repeat the poses. It is the same as the 50 minute class but shorter.
All in all I think is was a good first attempt at a yoga dvd. I only gave it 3 stars because I just don't know what the shelf life will be for me before I give it away. I could do everything without much effort. Nothing to grow into.
UPDATE: I just did this dvd again for the 2nd time. This time I knew the routine and was able to enjoy it more with the pretty guitar music. I also did both meditations. One by Trudie and and one by yoga teacher D'Silva. They were a bit talky, but otherwise relaxing.

Crunch - The Perfect Yoga Workout: The Joy of Yoga & Fat-Burning Yoga (2001) Review

Crunch - The Perfect Yoga Workout: The Joy of Yoga and Fat-Burning Yoga (2001)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The philosophy of all videos in the Crunch line is to make working out accessible to all people, regardless of size or experience. Their yoga videos are no exception, as they take a non-mystical approach and are taught in a very straightforward manner by instructor Sara Ivanhoe. Ivanhoe's down-to-earth style (she frequently uses words like "scooch") is completely non-intimidating; she comes across as a friendly workout buddy.
Joy of Yoga begins with a focused breathing series involving forward bends and down dogs (there are many repetitions of this position) and then moves on to additional standing poses, including warrior, lunges, and twists. The floor portion of the workout consists mostly of relaxing stretches, but there is one tough segment which alternates arm/leg stretches with yogi pushups. This practice is about 35 minutes long. Fat-burning yoga is a more active practice, although not quite to the level of aerobic conditioning or power yoga. Again, the practice begins with breathing and then introduces the use of vinyasas: several poses are combined together in a flowing sequence and then the entire sequence is repeated several times. After a brief warm-up, there is a long, sun salutation-type vinyasa containing lunges, push-up pose, simple backbends, and many repetitions of downward dog. For each repetition, a slightly more difficult variation is introduced, and by the end of this series, your arms and shoulders have gotten an intense workout. Additional vinyasas include twisting lunges, proud warrior, triangle, and side angle pose. This practice ends with a short abs section containing a few boat poses, seated backbends, and two Pilates-like exercises. Finally, there are some brief seated stretches and an even briefer relaxation pose for about 45 total minutes.
Ivanhoe's cues are detailed enough for those new to yoga, and both practices are probably doable by most beginners, especially with the modifications provided. However, for complete yoga novices, I think that some prior familiarity with basic yoga postures would be beneficial. Also, it is important to keep in mind that both of these practices contain some fairly intense moves which demand some pre-existing fitness capacity; Fat-Burning Yoga in particular is a more strenuous practice that will challenge even intermediate yogis. Finally, Ivanhoe's strong emphasis on breathing is a plus for all levels of yoga practitioners, and those who like her friendly, no-nonsense style are likely to enjoy these videos.

""Upbeat, athletic-style yoga class of basic standing and floor postures."" Shape Magazine Two complete yoga workouts led by a friendly, down-to-earth instructor. They both feature a medley of classic yoga poses (e.g. downward facing dog, plank, warrior, cobra, triangle and mountain pose) ""Joy of Yoga"" provides the improved flexibility and relaxation benefits of traditional yoga without the intimidating attitude. Sara's unusually laid-back style makes it unusually easy to do (e.g. ""if your knees are doing this, just flop them out"" or ""now just kinda wiggle your fingers""). Her emphasis is always on enjoying the movement, not perfecting each one. It has more energetic, upbeat music than most yoga videos. The second program, ""Fat Burning Yoga,"" also features classic yoga moves. Sara's solid cuing and non-mystical style makes it an effective and exceptionally yoga workout. And by helping you achieve a balanced lifestyle and a deeper body-awareness, it provides a key element in weight-loss success (but it's really too slow to immediately burn much fat...). It ends with a short, but intense, segment of traditional ab-focused floorwork. Bright, colorful, airy set. ©1997 & 2001. (80 min.). Note: VHS version is only the ""Fat Burning"" program; it does not include ""Joy of Yoga.""Amazon.com description
