Betterman - Anime Legends Complete Collection Review

Betterman - Anime Legends Complete Collection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I heard that my friend watched this a while ago, I decided to pick it up and see what it was about. I was reluctant at first, thinking it would be a cheezy knock-off of some anime I've already seen. But at the end of the first episode, I was practically begging for more, pushing the next button for the next episode.
The main plot is that a virus is spreading across the world, known as "Algernon". Akamatsu Industries at this time is trying to find a way to stop the virus before it contaminates the entire world (some symptoms you may not pick up on right away)! Keita, the protagonist, is dragged into this conflict by getting himself lost in the Bottom World, where he meets the Betterman, who takes on a form of a dragon after eating a mysterious seed.
I would flush out more of the plot, but then I would be spoiling most of the fun! But I must say, even though the animation was on par with Escaflowne, the storyline just about surpassed Neon Genesis Evangelion (in confusion, that is. Shoot, it sort of has the ending similar to "End of Evangelion"!). The characters are presented very nicely, the story is incredible, although sometimes confusing, and they don't overexaggerate on the action, which some anime tends to do unintentionally.
If you feel like sparing thirty or so dollars on a fun, cutesy anime with lots of over-sized women anatomies and simple things like that, this anime probably isn't for you. However, if you want to get involved in a story that may change your way of thinking for a couple of days, then I would definately recommend this.
NOTE: You may suffer brain exhaustion by watching this anime in one sitting, take it a couple of episodes at a time!

Bastard - Complete Collection Review

Bastard - Complete Collection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I first heard of the "Bastard!!" series back in the early 90's and recalled many fans at an anime convention talking about how cool the series was and how funny it was because of the main character's name (Dark Schneider) and the many references to popular US metal bands (from the 80's).
After watching all six episodes, I just fell in love with this series. There have been several "Bastard!!" video games available for the SNES and Sony Playstation and the series has yet to be "fully completed", although the six-OAV episode arc is just totally awesome!
The series is about an evil warlock named "Dark Schneider" who has been freed from imprisonment and fortunately, the evil warlock has been combined with a very good kid named Rushe which makes him somewhat a hero to aid the people of Meta-Rikana" and take on his old generals and army.
The storyline is just awesome but since this anime includes combat, humor and wizardry...the battles can be bloody and too violent for some people.
All in all, an awesome anime featuring awesome characters (and character designs) such as Ninja Master Gara, Thunder Empress Arshes Nei and more.
Check out this anime, you won't be disappointed.

Death Note: Re-Light, Vol. 1 - Visions of a God (2009) Review

Death Note: Re-Light, Vol. 1 - Visions of a God (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

...I was quite disappointed w/this DVD.
First, the good stuff: The animation of the new scenes is lovely; the colors & design are brighter and crisper than in the original anime. It's really the only reason I gave it 3 stars instead of 2. The extra scenes are interesting, but don't add that much to the original series.
OK, now the bad stuff: This is basically a clip show, following just over halfway thru the anime (where a particularly lovable character dies). It's framed by Ryuk telling the story to another shinigami. But that's about it.
I'd had high hopes for this DVD (given the description), but, alas, they were dashed [siiiiigh].
I'd recommend this for (a) Death Note completists, or (b) someone who doesn't want to invest the time in watching the entire first half of the original anime.

Queen's Blade Wandering Warrior: Beaten Path (2008) Review

Queen's Blade Wandering Warrior: Beaten Path (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Queen's Blade is a series that is built upon its superb characters, and the second volume of the anime expands the cast past the introductory characters from the first volume. As the first season enters it's halfway point the foundation begins to establish itself by introducing more characters and expanding the characters of the existing ones. The action, character development, diverse vistas, and great music are all back in stronger form than in the first volume; sure to satisfy anyone who was not satisfied by the action in the first volume.
The fanservice is still in strong form in this volume, perhaps even stronger than the first, but, as always, the series executes it's fanservice with sophistication and toungue-in-cheek moments of humor. This is one of the main highlights of the series; how the fanservice in Queen's Blade never feels forced, unnecessary, or juvenile in it's execution. As a result, Queen's Blade comes across as a fanservice anime that one can respect for it's characters, story, humor, and action rather than one of those anime one hides under their bed.
With this volume, Queen's Blade is at the midway point of it's first season; however, the entire first season acts as a foundation for the simply stellar second season. This is why I give it 4 stars. The second season is definite 5 star material.

Dragon Ball Z - Broly - Second Coming (Uncut) (1996) Review

Dragon Ball Z - Broly - Second Coming (Uncut) (1996)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This has a really cool end fight, but overall weak story.
After Broly was defeated by Goku in the first movie, he managed to escape into a Sayin Space pod, only to crash on earth and be encased in a sheet of Ice. Flash forward seven years later, Goten, Trunks and Videl are searching for the Dragon Balls because Videl wants to see Shenron. They stumble across a village plauged by a demon. they volunteer to help only to unwittingly awaken Broly. Not understanding what they are up against they take him on only to be beaten badly until Gohan shows up. With the help of Krillan and a fallen hero they put an end to Broly.
This is overall an ok movie. The fight between Broly and Gohan was cool and the ending reminded me much of the Cell Games, but the fact that most of the movie is more comedic and revolves around Goten and Trunks, and Broly this time around is no longer the ruthless monster from the first, now he is an utterly insane beast who can only say the name Kakarot. Overall this one is good, but not the best.

Vampire Hunter D - Bloodlust (2001) Review

Vampire Hunter D - Bloodlust (2001)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Vampire Hunter D (from the Kikuchi Manga) is one of anime's most venerable titles. The original movie helped define what was to be expected of Japanese animation, and its influence was felt through titles like Akira and Princess Mononoke. So, when the sequel was announced, fans began to drool all over themselves in anticipation, and for good reason ' everything is improved in this movie (actually the THIRD installment of the Manga), from the animation to the handling of the story, and it's a true pleasure to watch on anyone's home theater.
The main character, D, is a half-human, half-vampire whose dark legacy affords him near-supernatural qualities. He uses his abilities to fight evil, and is considered the best vampire hunter in the land. His next prey is Meier Link, a gentleman vampire who has kidnapped a rich businessman's daughter. His competition is the Markus brothers, a group of mortal vampire hunters who, together, equal D in power, cunning, and skill. With the help of his symbiotic Hand (a wisecracking mouth that gives D advice and offers comic relief), D sets off to find Link, only to discover that things are not what they seem.
The animation is top-notch, fluid and vibrant, and the painstaking detail on the backgrounds puts the viewer smack into D's world. Crosses are everywhere, and each gothic spire serves as a reminder of the constant threat of vampires ' and of the heroism of D and his kind. The DVD transfer leaves nothing out, coming off clean and sharp all through. The DD 5.1 soundtrack is amazingly aggressive ' easily one of the best digital tracks available ' and Bloodlust could serve as a decent demo disc to show off a new home theater system. The creators should be applauded for their efforts, as sound is just as important as backgrounds in animation, and no detail was spared.
Much has been made about the fact that there wasn't any Japanese track on this DVD. Guess what folks? The movie was originally recorded, and lip-synced, IN ENGLISH. That's right, ENGLISH. So do your homework, fanboys! Really!
Even if you aren't an anime fan, at least give Bloodlust a try; with such a great video and sound transfer, and a great movie to boot, it's hard not to rave about it.

Bleach Movie 1: Memories of Nobody (2008) Review

Bleach Movie 1: Memories of Nobody (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Many anime movies based on a TV series are basically like extremely long episodes, though often with with better animation and music.
And such is the case with the first movie based on the hit anime series, "Bleach: Memories of Nobody." It's not a perfect movie adaptation -- several regulars are reduced to brief cameos -- but it is graced with some extremely solid action sequences, lovely animation, a solid mix of comedy and tragedy, and a nice little storyline for the perpetually stressed-out Ichigo.
After disposing of a Hollow, Ichigo and Rukia encounter puffy creatures with pointed red heads. When the things start getting pushy, a strange Shinigami girl named Senna appears and wipes many of them out.
Turns out these things are Blank (amnesiac) souls from the Valley of Screams in the Severed World, and the only way to get rid of 'em is to find the Memory Rosary, a being that contains all their memories. As Ichigo struggles to keep an eye on the flighty Senna, he is charged with finding the Memory Rosary and protecting it from the mysterious man who is leading the Blanks.
Guess who the Memory Rosary is. I'll give you a hint: it's someone not in the regular cast.
Anyway, a bunch of Soul Reapers are dispatched to bring the Memory Rosary back with them, only to have her snatched away by a strange man named Ganryu, who has a grudge against the Soul Reapers. Ichigo and Rukia discover the portal into the Severed World -- but there's only an hour before the worlds of the living and the dead collide, with devastating results. And even with the help of all his Soul Reaper friends, Ichigo may not be able to prevail...
Anyone not familiar with Tite Kubo's "Bleach" series will probably be utterly lost during "Memories of Nobody," especially given the vast cast of Good Guys who show up without introduction. The entire movie plays out like a very long anime filler episode, but with a lot more new characters, villains, and introducing an entire dimension between the Soul Society and the living world. And an accidental Ichigo-Kon kiss.
Fortunately "Memories of Nobody" does a good job preserving the flavor of the "Bleach" anime series. It starts off rather lightweight and a bit talk-heavy until Ganryu decides to show himself, leading into a clash between the Soul Reapers and his nasty little minions. Those rapid-fire battles are astounding -- quick, lethal and full of special powers (including Ichigo riding on Renji's zanpakuto). And the climax is simply spectacular -- a bloody savage duel between Ganryu and Ichigo on a vast leafless tree, even as the Severed World starts falling apart.
And the writers strike a good balance in "Memories of Nobody" -- we have acrobatic battles, flashy powers, a bit of Hollow-slaying, and some poignant moments for Ichigo and Senna. Fortunately amid all this serious stuff, there's some humor as well -- including a running gag about ambulance crews trying to resuscitate Ichigo's soulless body, which he has a bad habit of simply dropping any old place. I've always wanted to see that happen.
Even the animation has been souped-up here. It's a little more detailed and defined than animation for a weekly TV show, and there are some lovely visuals -- sprays of maple leaves, the nighttime lights of Karakura, and the explosive battles between Soul Reapers. And the soundtrack -- particularly the violin solo -- is simply lovely.
The characterization is one weak spot, though. Most of the main cast -- including Uryu, Chad, Orihime and all of Urahara's little gang -- are reduced to standing on a bridge waiting for Ichigo to come back. And somehow Ganryu is never quite compelling -- we never find out why he was exiled, or what motivations he has beyond wanting revenge on the Soul Society.
But this is a well-written story for Ichigo Kurosaki, -- his gruff, slightly awkward personality is captured beautifully, as well as his iron-clad determination to protect anybody he's become fond of. Senna is a character so completely flaky that she makes Orihime look like Eeyore, but she does manage to be likable and good-hearted despite that.
"Bleach: Memories of Nobody" is not quite as good as it could have been, but it's a solid adventure for Ichigo and his assorted Soul Reaper friends. An entertaining, fast-paced little ride.

Berserk Complete Review

Berserk Complete
Average Reviews:

I've uploaded some scans of the discs and cover/case onto Imageshack (I can't upload onto Amazon yet for some reason). Why? Because the disc artwork is, quite frankly, wonderful.
Discs 1 & 2: http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/8559/b1cz3.jpg
Discs 3 & 4: http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/9803/b2vn9.jpg
Discs 5 & 6: http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/3209/b3fh9.jpg
Case/Cover: http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/4645/12787150rz1.jpg
Now, as you can probably see by viewing my scan of the cover/case, the six discs are fitted in a standard sized DVD case. I never thought I'd live to see six discs fitted in a case so small but I have. Four of the discs go on the left and right sides of the case and the remaining two go on a piece of plastic that was fitted onto the spine of the case. The discs fit in nicely but it doesn't seem like much of a box set. At least the cover looks vastly superior to the cover of the old budget Berserk set...
My main complaint isn't with the cheap case, though -- it's with the video quality. On the back of the case it's pointed out that the series has been "beautifully remastered from film." This is confusing because there's little to no difference between the video quality on the old Berserk DVDs and the video quality on these 'remastered' DVDs that my eyes can see. When I watched both versions of episode 1, the only real difference I saw was that the Japanese Berserk logo didn't flicker during the opening on the 'remastered' DVD. Hardly worth re-buying the series for!
There are minor changes included, such as Japanese text replacing English text during the opening and some subtitle changes, but nothing major enough to warrant re-buying the series if you already own it. To be honest, the only impressive thing about this re-release is the new disc artwork, which is vastly superior to the old disc artwork. Even the DVD menus and extras are the same as before.
It's 100% worth buying the series for amounts as small as £17.99 (PlayUSA) if you don't already own the series on DVD because Berserk is up there with the best anime has to offer. But, aside from diehard Berserk fans, for everyone else it'd be a waste of money.
I'd normally continue beyond this point, explaining why Berserk is in my top 10 anime list, but it's an old series and there are plenty of reviews out there that highlight its many qualities. So, instead of rambling on, I'm going to just say that you MUST watch Berserk if you're an anime fan, or even if you're simply a fan of dark fantasy.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Part 2 (2010) Review

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Part 2 (2010)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In Japan, "Fullmetal Alchemist" (Hagane no Renkinjutushi) has been a popular long running anime and manga series created by mangaka Hiromu Arakawa. The original manga series was serialized in Square Enix's "Shonen Gangan" since 2001, while the 51-episode TV series created by BONES was shown on television in 2004 and was followed by a film to conclude the series.
The popularity of "Fullmetal Alchemist" has led to many novels, OVA's, drama CD's, soundtracks and video games and a lot of these releases have been distributed in various countries and its popularity is a testament of how people have come to love the series which has won many awards in Japan including being voted for the #1 most popular anime series of all time.
Despite it's popularity, the series could have gone on longer but because the anime series was created when the manga was only several years old, the anime series only lasted 51-episodes and there were differences between what the director featured on the anime series and what Arakawa had in the manga.
So, in 2009, a new series titled "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood" (Hagane no Renkinjutsushi: Furumetaru Arukemisuto) was created by BONES and this time around, the series would follow the manga much more closely. Currently there are over 60 episodes that have aired in Japan and the series is still ongoing. Also, unlike the previous anime series, this series would be created in HD (540p). The first 13 episodes of "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood" would feature its first 13-episodes covering the first 26-episodes from the original anime series but from that point on, the series becomes a whole new storyline which features more characters and for the most part, something new and different for the viewers, especially fans of the original series.
To make sure that there is a difference between this series aside from the storyline differences compared to the original, the staff is different this time around as well as the character designs. The director for "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood" would be Yasuhiro Irie (who worked on RahXephon", "Cowboy Bebop", "Macross Plus", "Gunparade March"), series composition by Hiroshi Ohnogi ("Eureka Seven", "Area 88, "Aquarion", "RahXephon", "RIN", "Skullman"), music by Akira Senju ("Red Garden", "Mobile Suit Victory Gundam", "Silent Service"), character designs by Hiroki Kanno ("Angelic Layer", "Eureka Seven", "Ninja Scroll", "RahXephon") and art design by Takeshi Satou ("Mobile Suit Gundam 00', "Ghost Slayers Ayashi", "Please Twins!").
"Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood" is a series about two young alchemist brothers named Edward and his younger brother Alphonse Eric (aka "Al"). Their father left them and several months after their father left, an epidemic hit their village and killed their mother. Grieving and alone without their mother, the two quickly tried to hone their alchemist skills and hope to bring their mother back alive by using a human transmutation (this is illegal and considered taboo by alchemist).
While performing the transmutation, a dark shadow comes and literally breaks apart the body of Alphonse and as for Edward, he is shown "the truth" but in return for doing the transmutation, there is a toll and in this case, he loses his legs and feet and his right arm. And the transmutation to bring their mother fails as Edward was only able to revive a disembodied figure. In a short time allowed before the dark shadow leaves, Edward was able to bond Al's soul to a suit of armor but there are some consequences. And these consequences and guilt have plunged Edward to the lowest he had ever been.
Meanwhile, a military figure named Roy Mustang has come and is shocked to see that Edward was able to survive a human transmutation and also anchoring his brother's soul and thus gives Edward a chance to join the military to fight with them but at the same time, gaining access that may give Edward a chance to bring his brother back to life and also his own body as well.
With this opportunity, this gives Edward a chance to repair what he did wrong and help his brother. But as they investigate on how they can get their bodies back and investigating what is known as a "Philosopher's Stone", an unknown group is out there, observing his every move and willing to kill in order to get to Edward.
In part two of "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood", the story begins to focus on the military encounter with the Homunculi, the investigation of Hughes death and Winry coming face-to-face with the murderer who killed her parents.
VIDEO:
"Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - Part Two" is presented in 1080p HD 16×9 via a HD native source. It's important to note that although the conversion was made to 1080p, I've read that the actual Japanese original masters were created in 540p. With that being said, this is a TV series and one can't expect OVA or film quality but I manage to compare the DVD and Blu-ray version and the Blu-ray looks much more colorful, much more detailed and looked much better and more colorful than its DVD counterpart.
I did notice edge enhancement and I'm sure the conversion of a 540p source to 1080p possibly led to the jaggies that can be seen at times. Granted, I'm a bit picky when it comes to video quality but the fact that this is created by BONES (a busy anime production company) and the fact that this is not an OVA or film, for a TV series, "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood" looks very good. Granted, it's not uber-vibrant but there is a good amount of shading, detail, blacks are deep and overall, I felt the Blu-ray looked much better than its DVD counterpart.
AUDIO:
"Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - Part Two" is presented in English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 and in Japanese Dolby TrueHD 2.0. Overall, the 5.1 lossless soundtrack sounds very good and there is a good amount of surround usage and its much more immersive than its Japanese lossless counterpart. There is quite a bit of action in this second volume, plenty of battles are featured and many episodes that utilize the surround channels.
The Japanese lossless soundtrack is still good, especially if you have a receiver in which you can change the setting to stereo on all channels. I do prefer the Japanese lossless soundtrack in terms of acting especially during the more emotional moments in this second volume (which there are many). But I've watched the series in both Japanese and English and for the most part, both are well done and similar to "Dragon Ball Z" and "One Piece", the English dub has caught my attention and this time around, I was watching many of the episodes in English. But both voice acting are well done.
Subtitles are in English.
NOTE: You can not use your audio button to switch from Japanese to English and vice versa while watching the series. You will need to press your guide button to switch to another audio. Also, you can not optionally remove English subtitles unless you choose the English lossless soundtrack. So, for those who want to watch the series in Japanese with no English subtitles may be disappointed by this.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
"Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - Part Two" comes with the following special features:
* EPISODE 14 Commentary - Audio commentary by Mike McFarland (ADR Director/Line Director and voice of Havoc) and voice talents Chris Patton (Greed) and Vic Mignona (Edward Elric) talking about reprising their role for "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood).
* EPISODE 23 Commentary - Audio commentary by ADR director and voice talent Mike McFarland (Havoc) and English Dub voice talents Todd Haberkorn (Ling Yao), Monica Rial (May Chang), Trina Nishimura (Lan Fan).
* Textless Opening and Closing Songs - The textless opening and ending theme songs.
* Trailers - FUNimation Entertainment trailers.
JUDGMENT CALL:
Like the first part of "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood", there is a good amount of episodes that will make you laugh and even make you want to shed some tears as not only does the series feature a good amount of action, fun and upbeat moments but also heartbreaking episodes. Especially those dealing with Ed and Al's realization of what happened to their good friend Hughes and when we see Winry confront the man who killed her parents. Heartbreaking scenes but definitely added to the enjoyment of this series.
Aside from the more emotional scenes, the battle between the military and the homunculi is starting to ramp up and we get to see a number of awesome battles between the military and the Homunculi and also an introduction to Lin Yao, Lan Fan, May Chang and also a confrontation with the murderer Scar.
If anything, while the first series was more or less trying to jam pack a lot of story (that people saw in the first series) in its first 13 episodes, this time around the storyline becomes much more focused on what took place on the manga series. More character development was needed on the military characters and the writers have done a wonderful job in including more scenes with Roy Mustang, Jean Havoc, Riza Hawkeye and also on the newer characters Ling Yao, Lan Fan and May Chang. As well as showcasing the homunculi and what they are capable of.
I really enjoyed part two of "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood" and how well-paced, how action-packed and how much deeper the episodes were. This latest volume was quite addicting and I definitely enjoy how the series has continued to grow and improve with each episode.
As for the Blu-ray release, as explained with my review for the first volume, some people may have issues that this series is not true 1080p but created in 540p and then upscaled to...Read more›

Dragon Ball GT: Season One Review

Dragon Ball GT: Season One
Average Reviews:

Unlike most of the people giving this a bad rap, I actually own the product in question. This is not just some kid howling because they hate DBGT since it's not as OMFG H4RDC0R3!!!1ONE!!!... THREE MONTHS BEFORE IT'S EVEN ON SHELVES. Come on.
The box itself is the same as the DBZ sets, although it is a few millimeters longer vertically, so it doesn't sit flush with the DBZ sets on a shelf. The booklet inside has some character biographies and short episode summaries. There is no "About the Transfer" blurb on the back of the booklet as there was on the back of the DBZ set booklets.
The transfer on here is pretty much on par with the DBZ remasters. Not a lot of spots or scratches to be found. There isn't any evidence of compression here even though they squeezed 34 episodes on 5 discs instead of the usual 6, so I was impressed. You are unable to switch the visuals to the original Japanese, so you're stuck seeing the "comical" Funimation episode titles.
The standard audio track is the 5.1 English dub with original Japanese audio, and they remade the opening track. Instead of the horrid rap track they originally made, they had Vic Mignogna sing the original Japanese track in English. Even if you switch the audio track to the US broadcast version, you will still hear this remade track. The rap version is nowhere to be found. The Japanese track is in mono as always.
Extras (on the 5th disc) are pretty sparse, following the recent DBZ box sets. You can see clean opening and ending videos as well as some trailers for upcoming releases, although they are a little dated. The Dragonball Z trailer is for Season Seven, which released last month. You'd think they would use the most recent trailer for Season Eight instead.
The set includes episodes 1-34 (Black Star and the majority of the Baby sagas), so it encompasses all of the "Lost Episodes" that were originally released out of order. The next box set, featuring SS4 Gogeta on the front, will include the last half of the series as well as the special "A Hero's Legacy" to wrap up the series. No release date was shown on the trailer.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Part 5 (2011) Review

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Part 5 (2011)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ok, so to date the final volume of the Funimation release of Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood part 5 has not been yet released, but the entire series finished airing in japan last year, so this is my review of the final chapter of the series.
Ok, I'm one of the rare few folks who started into watching FMA:Brotherhood without having seen the original series at all. To be honest, while I like some shounen series like DBZ, I do find the classic shounen anime cliches and tropes to get a little repetitive and when the original FMA series aired on US TV, I caught a few random eps and it seemed pretty good, but something about the show failed to hook me in. Fast foward to the present and I learned about the new remake series that came out in 2009 and thought 'whats the point?' and was intrigued at the premise that this series follows the manga series faithfully, which was reportedly a much better story than the original anime, which thru no fault of its own, had a very incomplete (barely the first quarter) manga story to work with. They stretched out what they had to work with into half a tv series then completed the rest with their own original storyline that concluded with an ending that runs hot or cold with fans.
Luckily, hearing about FMA:Bro late, the entire series was already aired and fansubbed but since the first 4 volumes were out commercially, I rented all the available discs released by Funimation and finished the rest of the series with what I could find elsewhere. And all I can say is:
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood probably ranks among my top 10 favorite anime series...of all time.
And that is saying something for someone who has been watching anime since the late 80s. Eventually I watched the original series afterwards which I found relatively dissapointing compared to this incredible successor.
Part 5 covers the final 12 eps of this 64 episode series and what can I say about this series.
You're looking at nonstop, exhausting action as the main villain Father, aka the original Homunculus, reveals his grand plan, which far outshadows anything that the frankly lame villain, Dante, from the original series could have ever dreamed up. Basically you have our heroes Ed & Al, allied with all their friends from Amnestris, Xing, even the Ishbalans all banding together to deal with the last of the Homunculi while trying to stop Father from carrying out his plan that threatens the whole world, God, and all of reality itself. All I can say is the finale climax approaches a scope that rivals the end of Evangelion itself and really reveals the genius of manga authors Arakawa's imagination and storytelling skill.
Without giving any spoilers as to how this incredible series ends, I can safely say that by the final episode of this new series, you have a definitive ending with full resolution of all plotlines and characters, unlike the the original series which required another movie to finish of the storyline with somewhat iffy results. You finally see the end of Ed and Alphonse quest the way that should have been written in the first place. This last chapter will evoke every emotion out of the viewers leaving you drained, but ultimately satisfied. Perfect end to a near perfect shounen series that elevates the entire genre and providing a VERY TOUGH act to follow.

Resident Evil: Degeneration (2008) Review

Resident Evil: Degeneration (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Resident Evil series has become one of the top selling titles for video game company CAPCOM. Known in Japan as "Biohazard", the series has sold over 34 million games and among the series, one of the most popular titles was the 1996 Sony Playstation game "Resident Evil 2' which introduced us to the characters of Racoon City rookie police officer Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield (sister of "Resident Evil 1' hero Chris Redfield).
The two were popular characters that fans enjoyed and in 2005, "Resident Evil 4' featuring Leon Kennedy became a huge hit earning "Game of the Year" by various publications.
With the popularity of the character of Leon Kennedy, how fitting was it when CAPCOM announced the reuniting of both Leon and Claire. As a fan of the video game series, I was definitely excited and couldn't wait to see the film. "resident evil: DEGENERATION" takes place seven years after "Resident Evil 2'.
VIDEO & AUDIO:
Picture quality is pretty good. The film is entirely in CG and was created in Maya. The CG was well done but not as fluid as "Final Fantasy: Advent Children" but still looked very impressive. The rendered character models were just great to look at (especially at the beginning when you see the airport or even the WilPharm HQ. Both look very realistic!) and Leon, Claire and Angela Miller model renders were just very well done. If anything, there is slight jerkiness when it comes to a close up of a character and trying to make it do natural and realistic movements during a conversation. But during the action scenes, the movements were very nice and overall, the CG was very well done.
If anything, fans of the video games will more than likely enjoy these CG rendered scenes.
As for audio, the audio is featured in Dolby Digital 5.1 and during the action scenes (which there are many), sound does come alive and sounds very good on my system. Dialogue is quite clear. As for the music, the ending theme "Guilty" is by Japanese music artist ANNA TSUCHIYA.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
The DVD features quite a few special features which include:
* The Generation of DEGENERATION featurette - This featurette interviews Makoto Kamiya and other CAPCOM staff and their goal with the film, why they used the actual English voice actors in terms of the motion capture (including having them learn how to hold a gun) and more behind-the-scenes footage on the creation of the film. Also, fan reaction at San Diego Comic Con.
* Character Profiles - Profiles feature a text blurb on each character and you can access a video or photography profile (from parts of the film).
* Voice Bloopers - This is more or less bloopers but not sure if it was intentionally created or if it was actual bloopers. One featured Leon Kennedy telling the others about his "fee". Quite funny to watch.
* Faux Leon Interview - I'm not quite sure what this feature was about. A man is interviewing one of the motion capture actors and the actor is talking about working with Kamiya-san and others on the film.
* Resident Evil: Degeneration Trailers - Trailers for the film
* Resident Evil: Degeneration Tokyo Game Show Trailer - Tokyo Game Show trailer
* Resident Evil 5 Special Game Footage - Promotional video for the upcoming Playstation "Resident Evil" game.
* Resident Evil 5 Game Trailers - Trailers for the upcoming Playstation 3 video game.Let me first say that I am a big fan of the "Resident Evil" series and I own nearly all the US releases. "Resident Evil 2' really was innovative when it first was released for the Sony Playstation and was my favorite R.E. game until "Resident Evil 4' was released and that video game was just incredible.
So, that being said, watching this film had me smiling because I absolutely adore both the characters of Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield. How this film furthers the storyline of the two characters but also builds on certain situations that may have major ramifications for future video game releases is quite exciting.
So, with that being said, I enjoyed the film because the creators really wanted to pay homage to "Resident Evil 2' and "Resident Evil 4' video game series and its fans. But I realize that many people who are not familiar with the video game series are wondering how the context of this film is to the live-action film series featuring Mila Jovovich.
There is a relation by name and of course, the virus that turns people to zombies but really, this film was created for the fans of the video game series in mind.
Also, with this being a video game-related film, many who crave a deep storyline with character development of who is Claire and who is Leon may feel disappointed. The reason why video gamers who played the video games is that through those video game moments of playing these characters for hours, there was a vested interest.
I would assume that many viewers not familiar with the video game series won't pick up the importance of Claire or Leon to the actual "Resident Evil" storyline. In fact, some may wonder why they should care about these characters especially at the end with the politics surrounding the viruses.
So, with that being said, "resident evil: DEGENERATION" is an awesome film for those who followed the video game series. The film features plenty of non-stop action, bloody violence courtesy to the zombies and you even get a scene with blood that splatters on to the camera. But the enjoyment comes from those who had the experience of playing "Resident Evil 2' and "Resident Evil 4' and to see Claire and Leon again.
The CG looks great and there are some moments that I was just really in awe but at the same time, there are some movements that were jerky and robotic at times. But overall, the model renders were good and Leon and Claire look very good. So, the bottom line is that this film is just total fan service for "Resident Evil" video game fans. So much that I highly recommend this DVD.
For those who are not familiar with the video game series, you may enjoy it but if you are expecting a continuation of the live action films, then this DVD may not be for you. In fact, some may be disappointed because there is no strong plot for them to truly enjoy these characters especially without playing the video games. So, I can understand if they don't get into it.
Again, if you are fans of the "Resident Evil" video games, you can't help but have a smile on your face because there is now a "Resident Evil" film that was created with the RE video game fan in mind. And for that, I recommend this DVD for you!
