Whitewash: Clarence Brandley Story (1994) Review

Whitewash: Clarence Brandley Story (1994)

Finally, somebody made a movie that showed the truth about the corruption in Montgomery County. I used to live there and I remember this case. This is 2004 and they still (even county officials) freely use the "N" word. These guys are as racist as it gets. This county's primary resource is crack amphetimine labs and they have a reputation for "unaccounted-for" bodies that still mysteriously surface from shallow graves occasionally. It was by the grace of God that Clarance Brandly was freed. Courtney Vance is awsome in this movie! You can watch Chuck Norris on "Texas Rangers" - that's Hollywood hype-nonsense. Whitewash's Texas Rangers - that's reality.

Ring of Fire (1991) Review

Ring of Fire (1991)

After almost 12 years of looking hopelessly for this edition of Ring of Fire on VHS and DVD, and even asking people online and searching the web to see if someone taped a copy off of TV, the real deal is finally here on DVD! If you don't know what I'm talking about, there was about 4 minutes of sex and nudity cut out of all versions of this movie on VHS and DVD and was only shown on premium channels back around 1991 or 1992. After almost 12 years they finally decided to release it with the nudity. Even if you already own a previous edition on DVD or VHS this is still a MUST BUY for Maria Ford fans. You won't be disappointed and the movie's (finally) great now!!

King Leopold's Ghost Review

King Leopold's Ghost
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
King Leopold's Ghost the book is profoundly challenging, and this movie which shares the same title and used the book as source material, is even more so. What the book describes, the movie shows, and the difference in impact is astounding. Using a steady stream of atrocity photos accompanied by Cheadle's unwavering voice overs, this can be very hard to watch. The sheer inhumanity of what took place in the Congo falls into the worst of the worst of human history, right up there with Auschwitz.
The tale of western imperialism and the drive by European powers to carve out a chunk of Africa for themselves, the movie details the fate of the Congo, colonized by King Leopold of Belgium. The drive to export more and more rubber led to the enslavement and wholesale slaughter of literally millions of natives. The brutality and wickedness of what took place is presented in detail in this film.
The film is important as both a reminder of the depths of what men can fall to, as well as a historical account of western Imperialism. It is unflinchingly accurate. Relying on historical documents, first person accounts from both Congolese and European alike, and even government documents, it conveys a historical authority that only intensifies the film's impact.
5/5 Stars. This movie will profoundly disturb you, and that is a good thing. Only by learning from the mistakes of the past can we move towards healing the wounds the west inflicted on the African continent.

Texas Lightning (1981) Review

Texas Lightning (1981)

When I heard that one of my favorite B movies from the 80's was coming out on DVD I was happy!! I ordered this DVD from MEDIA BLASTERS / GUILTY PLEASURES (known as RAREFLIX on EBAY) for a reasonable price. After quick delivery I anxiously put the disc in to watch!
Well.... first the good news. The old saying "Better to have something than nothing" is true. The Bad News? To start the source print is less than spectacular. The film is dirty, grainy at times. Multiple splices throughout disc. Full Screen transfer, no widescreen. Extras include 4 trailers from other films. There is a 'promotional' trailer of "Texas Lightning" on disc which is nothing more than the montage of scenes from the film's end made up as a teaser trailer.
Also to squash any rumors that might be floating about regarding the 'MAUREEN MCCORMICK NUDE SCENES', Uh.. They don't exist. At least not in this DVD version. Yes she does have a fling in a motel with one of the central characters but nothing more. I do recommend the VHS tape from MEDIA HOME VIDEO if you can locate it. Their transfer was from a better quality 35mm print. However if you are dying to see this film and do order the DVD, don't say I didn't warn you.

The Alcove (1984) Review

The Alcove (1984)

Reading the synapsis for this flick you'd think you've stumbled onto the Holy Grail of Laura Gemser, Annie Belle and Joe D'Amato exploitation flix. Yeah, I did too, but this simply isn't the case. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I was disappointed. Sure, we've got luscious Laura brought back from Africa as a 'gift' given to the White Hunter who saved her Abyssinian Chief father from his enemies (a fair trade?) strolling around semi-nude while the white women, Annie Belle (a secretary) and Lili Carati (the Hunter's wife), who've been having sapphic sessions in his absence, feign horror at the "smelly negroid woman" (no joke) thrust into their 1940's societal lives. When asked why she's never fully clothed, she replies, "White women have ugly bodies so they cover them to deceive their men". Classic. And we've got all the elements necessary for the Holy Grail of Eurosleaze, but something's missing. Most of the sex scenes are girl/girl until the end and are brief or edited. Annie Belle doesn't get fully naked, Laura is in only one worthwhile scene (a travesty), Lili's scenes are brief but the best, and the big finale sex scene was full of promise, but ultimately disappoints by showing us nothing. An abundance of missed opportunities left me wanting more. It's an OK soft-core flick that D'amato didn't have his heart in, like most of his 80's output. It's a box of fancy wrapped chocolates you can't wait to sink your teeth into, only to unwrap, bite down and find them hollow...

From the infamous Joe D Amato, director of such EuroSleaze classics as Emanuelle In Bangkok and Papaya: Love Goddess Of The Cannibals comes perhaps his most sumptuous skin saga of all! Legendary sex goddess Laura Gemser (Black Emanuelle) stars as an African princess brought home as a slave by a 1940s military officer, only to be sucked into a depraved new world of voyeurism, drugs, pornography, lesbian seduction, unholy nuns and more. Annie Belle (Laure), Al Cliver (Devil Hunter, Zombie, The Beyond) and supermodel-turned-porn-queen Lilli Carati (Escape From Women s Prison) co-star in this stylish-yet-filthy flesh-fest, now presented totally uncut and uncensored for the first time ever in America!EXTRAS:-Interview with Director Joe D'Amato-Theatrical Trailer

The Pistol - The Birth of a Legend (1998) Review

The Pistol - The Birth of a Legend (1998)

This is a must see movie for all Dads and sons (or daughters). FYI: Re the previous reviewer that gave it one star. The movie is not a lie. Before Pete Maravich attended Needham-Broughton high, he did indeed play at Daniel High in Clemson, SC. He holds the record there with 483 points in one season. Without this uninformed one star review, the movie would get the five stars that it so richly deserves.
