Cannibal (2006) Review

It has taken me awhile to write this review because I was so shocked by this movie after I saw it. It has stuck with me for the past week and it is probably a movie that I will never forget. What makes it so scarey is that it is based on a true story and is very factual. Be warned: this is a very gory movie and some of the scenes are very graphic for the gore. This movie also doesn't have much for dialog, but it really doesn't need dialog for the story being told. If you want a truely scarey horror flick, then see this movie. I do highly recommend it.

In 2003, a man with a lifelong cannibalistic obsession placed an advertisement on the Internet in search of a victim to eat. Unbelievably he received a reply from a willing victim, whereby the stage was set for one of the most awful and depraved crimes of modern times. The gruesome incident was captured on camcorder and the footage formed part of the evidence at the trial of the world's most infamous cannibal. CANNIBAL is a horrifying dramatic reenactment of the gruesome relationship between two depraved human beings: One with an insatiable appetite for human flesh, the other with a yearning to be consumed and thereby become one with the predator. Gruesome, repulsive but riveting, CANNIBAL cannot help but hold an awful fascination for devotees of the macabre.

Edgar Allan Poe's The Pit And The Pendulum (2009) Review

Edgar Allan Poe's The Pit And The Pendulum (2009)

A dominatrix hypnotist, lesbians making out, a mad scientist who is an abusive father, classical music (Chopin I think), buff boys wrestling in their underwear, hundreds of ticking clocks and cactuses (excuse me JB - CACTI) lots and lots of cacti. These are the main ingredients in David Decoteau's THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM, one of the most fascinating, beautiful and peculiar films it has ever been my pleasure to see. This one is really Decoteau at his absolute best, certainly one of the finest films of his career, ranking right up there with the original BROTHERHOOD and LEATHER JACKET LOVE STORY. This one wont be to everyones taste but if you are adventurous and love truly original film making this one is a genuine must see. The film has a great script and some really fine performances. How great to see Michael King back in a Decoteau film. He made quite an impression in WITCHES OF THE CARRIBEAN and he truly outdoes himself in this film (particularly in the aforementioned wrestling sequence). The music score is very good with selections from many different genres. Howard Wexler is once again the director of photography and the results he gets are astounding. This is a beautiful looking film, in fact I would dare say it is the most beautiful film Dave has made to this point (although BLONDE HEAVEN aka MORGANA is a close second). The shots of the lethal pendulum in action are breathtaking. / The mood of the film ranges from incredibly (almost hilariously) erotic to genuine suspense to high camp and under the skilled direction of Decoteau it all comes together quite nicely. I suppose viewers should be advised that this bares no genuine resemblance to the Poe story (although there is a pit of sorts and most definitely some impressive pendulums) It's obvious I'm a real fanboy of Decoteau but anyone who appreciates well made independent erotic horror films should love this one. The DVD provides a flawless anamorphic transfer and 5.1 Dolby soundtrack. Also included is a trailer for BROTHERHOOD 5 and the trailer for PIT. An hour of behind the scenes footage is included and it is the real stuff, not some cleaned up series of self-congratulatory interviews but a genuine look at Decoteau and his crew and cast at work. You will get a true feeling for how his films are made from watching it. Only minor complaint is that Dave's name is spelled incorrectly on the back of the box. This is an outstanding DVD release of an outstanding film. Don't miss it, don't miss it, don't miss it. It's amazing.

Score (Uncut & Uncensored) Review

Score (Uncut and Uncensored)

Yowza! "Score" is a product of it's times, the early 1970's, and it explores the sexual freedom spreading through society during that period with great insight. But be forewarned, the uncensored version took me by surprise. Radley Metzger adapted a New York City stage play about multiple seductions and transposed it to a Mediterranean setting. The acting, the camera work, and the setting combine to make a great looking product, without a doubt the best 'sexploitation movie' I have ever seen, and I've seen a bunch.
"Score" is a fast paced comedy about the interactions between two couples, and things eventually get pretty down and dirty without ever being X rated. Even better, the Blu-Ray looks magnificent, and there is a long interview with actress Lynn Lowry, behind the scenes footage featuring Radley Metzger in action on the set, and best yet an audio commentary by the reclusive director, all items alone worth the price. But the icing on the cake is that the movie is finally uncut for the first time in over 35 years.
I have seen the VHS of 'Score" and it was obviously the censored version. The interplay of dialogue and characters was there, but 15 minutes of man-on-man love making was missing. While not explicit, it is pretty graphic and I was shocked. If you are a homophobic male or think such images might upset you, STAY AWAY! However, if you truly want to see the 1970's swing in all directions, this is the best possible movie available in terms of acting, script, and direction.
Radley Metzger is generally considered the one true auteur of the sexploitation movies, and he consistently produced superior work even after drifting into porn. "Score" is perhaps his best work, literate, funny, and incredibly daring. Even 38 years after it was shot it still caught me off guard! If this sounds interesting, you can find no better document of the Sexual Revolution than 'Score".
