Knockin' on Heaven's Door (1998) Review

Knockin' on Heaven's Door (1998)

A little bit like "Lock, stock, and Two Smoking Barrels" with less people involved in the story. Great movie if you can watch it. The German only made it a bit difficult for me!
Once the major downfall I found with the film was the lack of subtitles on the copy that I had purchased. This time I gave it a 5 star so people might actually look at it, one. Two, because the film itself was a 5, and this region 2 version may have the one thing I had missing.
*I do not own the DVD listed here on amazon, but this is the only copy I have ever seen with English language listed on it.

Inside Club Wild Side (1999)

This wasn't a great movie, even by softcore standards, but it does it's job. A barely-there plot combined with pretty, yet flexible women equals a decent way to spend 85 minutes. Ahmo Hight doesn't get as flexible in this movie as she does in Hotel Exotica, but she's good to look at anyway. Once again, Monique Parent steals the show. This time around she's a primary character instead of a supporting character like in the first "Club Wild Side" movie. Look for plenty of naked chicks; don't look for anything else.

CHAIN REACTION (1996) Review

CHAIN REACTION (1996)
Average Reviews:

I was hoping this movie would be either a porn or a documentary. It turned out to be neither. Although I'm an admitted fan of the Bel Ami boys - especially Johan - I was pretty disappointed. It's about as close to an R-Rated gay porn as you can get.
It's trying to be a documentary about a young gay's "struggle with being gay" (Can you say... Cliche?) and it is missing the mark completely. The only dialog in the movie is a British voice using an annoying echo to represent Johan's thoughts. I'm sure even the real Johan is disappointed with the "thoughts" which are more like random ramblings.
If you like looking at naked Bel Ami bodies (presented in the "Playboy Channel" style) and are willing to use ALOT of imagination, this is your film. But be warned, there are much better ways to spend your dollars and see these same bodies doing much more. These are all XXX gay porn stars. This must have been a walk in the park for them.
My advice is not to waste your time or money on this movie.

Cannibal (2006) Review

Cannibal (2006)

It has taken me awhile to write this review because I was so shocked by this movie after I saw it. It has stuck with me for the past week and it is probably a movie that I will never forget. What makes it so scarey is that it is based on a true story and is very factual. Be warned: this is a very gory movie and some of the scenes are very graphic for the gore. This movie also doesn't have much for dialog, but it really doesn't need dialog for the story being told. If you want a truely scarey horror flick, then see this movie. I do highly recommend it.

In 2003, a man with a lifelong cannibalistic obsession placed an advertisement on the Internet in search of a victim to eat. Unbelievably he received a reply from a willing victim, whereby the stage was set for one of the most awful and depraved crimes of modern times. The gruesome incident was captured on camcorder and the footage formed part of the evidence at the trial of the world's most infamous cannibal. CANNIBAL is a horrifying dramatic reenactment of the gruesome relationship between two depraved human beings: One with an insatiable appetite for human flesh, the other with a yearning to be consumed and thereby become one with the predator. Gruesome, repulsive but riveting, CANNIBAL cannot help but hold an awful fascination for devotees of the macabre.

Road to Love Review

Road to Love
Average Reviews:

2001's "Tarik El Hob" (The Road To Love) is billed as a "Drama" but views more like a documentary, with the subject being homosexuality among French-Algerians. Karin is a student living with his girlfriend in Paris, who decides to tackle a sociology video project on that topic, and seeks out those open enough to be interviewed on camera. One of the early interviewees is Farid, a gay flight attendant, and the chemistry between the two is evident in their first meeting. Karim rebuffs Farid's good-natured flirtations, but it is clear he is flattered by the attention and somewhat intrigued by the possibility, though he repeatedly states that he is heterosexual and in love with his girlfriend. Farid's travels allow him to collect additional footage and research for Karim's project, and they get better acquainted in future meetings to review the information he obtained. Farid comes up with some tough questions for Karim, including why he doesn't see himself ever marrying his girlfriend, and why he chose this particular topic for his project. In time, the two make a journey to Morocco together, supposedly to do more research for the project, but both know it is a "honeymoon" of sorts for Karin to think about and reconcile his desires.
Beyond the story above, the film (actually, shot on video, in Paris, Marseille, Amsterdam and Morocco) is an informative and intriguing study of homosexuality among some Islamic cultures, where it was seen as an acceptable activity for young men before they married a woman, and where same-sex marriages actually took place until the mid 20th century. The story is told well, with attractive, non-stereotypical "actors" (Though obviously scripted, one wonders if part of this may be somewhat autobiographical, with the characters having the same names as those who play them.) and commendable techncial quality given the tiny budget. In French with English subtitles, some male nudity but no explicit sexual activity. DVD features deleted scenes and expanded versions of some of Karim's interviews.

Naked Fame Review

Naked Fame
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Two members of a gay male couple want to leave the adult film industry. One wants to be a singer, the other an actor. You only get to see brief nudity near the start and finish of this film. I guess you have to get their REAL performances to see more. Yes, Glenn the wannabe-singer was/is talented. However, he sings with that George Michael-esque voice that can be common. Such a voice was imitated in the South Park movie back in 1999. Further, he wants to go into dance music which really doesn't bring fame to its makers. Think about what happened to Salma Hayek's character in "54," for example.
This movie confirmed every controlling image of West Hollywood. It's filled with men who are young, muscular, beautiful, and of course full of attitude! They are very fashion-conscious and totally nonchalant toward drug usage. That whole area might as well have a sign saying, "Non-beautiful guys not welcome!"
I guess all that butch behavior in adult features is just acting. These guys have stereotyped accents. They make comments such as "I am so over this!" and "I had to take a pill just like Judy Garland." There's crying, hissy fits, recounting what therapists told them, etc. Homophobes (and of course, I disapprove of such bigotry) will cringe here at what some refer to as "gay accents."
I do think this may be an instructive documentary for people of all sexualities who want to be famous. This guy had to market himself in New York City. He had fights and splits with his manager. His boyfriend is told, "Stay away, because future stars need to look single." The wannabe singer has to take advice (read: criticism) from as many places as he could get it. This taps into the aspects of stardom that people enjoy seeing in the "American Idol" series.
Like documentaries for Ron Jeremy, Annabel Chong, and Seymore B*tts, this documentary showed relatives who are knowledgeable and accepting of their family member's work in the adult business. You only see Glenn's parents briefly at the start and finish of this work. I wish you could have seen more of them. Countless gay works show family members abandoning their gay relatives, but here they are supportive. It would have been great to see how these straight parents learned to accept their son's sexual orientation.
Despite the numerous gym bunnies in this documentary, there were several bears here: Chi Chi LaRue (which I learned is pronounced with a "sh," rather than a harder "ch"), Bruce Vilanch, and a nameless impresario. For those of us who like big guys, it would have been great to see these bears. Why do the thin guys get so show so much flesh and yet, we only get to see a partially unbuttoned shirt on one of the bears?
Glenn's partner reluctantly returns to being a nurse. However, nurses can make a TON of money. This man stated that he only made $30,000 at most in adult features: that's a fraction of what nurses can make, especially nurses that don't have children. He didn't fail by returning to this profession since it's more lucrative. He grows a beard when he does so. I think it's meant to be a sign of respectability, but it makes him look a lot like the gay conservative editorialist Andrew Sullivan.
In many ways, this was just the GWM's version of "Hoop Dreams.

Thinking XXX (Extended Cut) (2004) Review

Thinking XXX (Extended Cut) (2004)
Average Reviews:

Thinking XXX (Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, 2004)
I've been stepping up my watching of documentaries these past few years. Sort of a combination of feeling like too much of the time I spend in front of a screen is wasted and wanting to find out more about subjects that I know nothing, or little, about. It's not that much of a sacrifice when you've got stuff like this out there waiting to be seen. Celebrated photographer Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, while taking the photos for his book XXX: 30 Porn-Star Portraits, decided to film the process as well. The result is a fascinating look at the people behind the porn, as it were.
One (or, at least, I) always expects porn stars to be nice, bubbly, somewhat vacuous. I know, prejudice is a horrible thing, but there it is. And to be fair, a few of the folks who get camera time here come off exactly that way. But the majority are quite another thing entirely. Everyone, by now, knows the Jenna Jameson story, how she went from being "just another porn star" to being one of the biggest movers and shakers in the adult entertainment industry. (One of the interviewees notes that the E! True Hollywood Story episode on Jenna Jameson was the series' most watched episode of all time.) that sort of drive, intelligence, and ambition is very well represented here, and by many more stars than Jameson. Yeah, there are a lot of naked bodies to look at, and they're aesthetically pleasing, but the flesh on display is not the only attraction here; these people, and the other commentators Greenfield-Sanders ropes in to give their opinions (among them Gore Vidal, Nancy Friday, Karen Finley, and John Waters), really have interesting stuff to say about the business, about their lives, about the cultural mystique that allows such an industry to become the billion-dollar juggernaut it is. These is good people, these is! (And I had no idea Nina Hartley was still making movies-- I remember her from almost a quarter-century ago. More power to her!)
As well as all that, there's what (I assume) Greenfield-Sanders originally set out to document, the art of composing the pictures themselves. He works on antique equipment, so this isn't just a documentary about point-and-shoot camera technology. Even if it were, his idea here-- portraits of the stars clothed, then nude, in the same positions-- required a lot of forethought, a lot of retakes, and, no doubt, a lot of patience from everyone involved. Ever wonder what goes into one of those big coffee-table books of photography? I have little doubt that what Greenfield-Sanders shows us is no more than the tip of the iceberg, but it's enough to get a person wondering.
Rent this, send the kids to bed, and watch it. Prurient interests aside, I think you'll learn something. This one was definitely not filed in the "wasted time" folder in my head. ****

Locked Up Review

Locked Up
Average Reviews:

Erotic content good (requisite shower/rape scenes with ample full frontal footage). Dramatic content NOT very good or believable. Do German prisons really allow inmates to choose their cellmates and to set up housekeeping as lovers? Attractive actors. The "special features" interview with the 2 lead actors is very "honest" and worth listening to to hear their views on porn. Apparently the sex scenes are "hardcore" according to the actors, although the scenes appear to have been edited--perhaps for the US release?

Lady Chatterley's Lover (1982) Review

Lady Chatterley's Lover (1982)
Average Reviews:

A mainstay on HBO around 1982-83, "Lady Chatterly's Lover" is a soft-core romance, but not a sleazy one. It wasn't successful in theaters, maybe because nobody knew what audience it was targeted to (surely not literature addicts or art-house filmgoers; maybe Sylvia Kristel/"Emmanuelle" fans). Consequently, it was popular on cable and video, where viewing privacy can elicit whatever reactions necessary (mostly giggles). It isn't very well-made, but the acting is decent and the passion is convincing. The editing is sloppy, with some sequences, and the ending, cut short, but it does have a few steamy scenes, frisky nudity, and good location filming.

Shank - Unrated Director Cut (2009) Review

Shank - Unrated Director Cut (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The film, "Shank" was one of the offerings at the 14th Annual Gay and Lesbian Film Festival at the Carolina Theater in Durham, NC from August 13th through August 16th, 2009. It was not an easy film to watch because it depicted gang members who spent their days drinking and using drugs and filling their nights as a group picking out gay men who happened to be alone and defenseless, beating them senseless just for fun. In that gang was a young man named Cal who was a closeted gay man fighting it with everything he was worth. The problem was, he was in love with the defacto-leader of the gang, so much so that the desires he felt had bubbled up from their depths and in spite of himself, he found himself seeking out ways to meet those needs with strange men. The tightrope he had to walk was this: meet those desires but at all costs never let the gang discover he was doing it. He was so conflicted that after he would give in to his desires, he would become physically sick and woe to any man who happened to be his pickup if he assumed after the incident that Cal was gay.
One night, the prey that the gang selected for their gay bashing was a young college student and before the beating completely got out of hand, Cal stopped it surprising both the gang members and the victim, as well as himself. The victim, Oliver, was so thankful to Cal for saving him, he brought him home and treated him nicely giving Cal his first opportunity to have a decent relationship. But, the gang members couldn't let Cal drop out of the gang. That would be treason and would require revenge, so as each day passed they planned and plotted to win him back, but that was before they discovered his secret. When they found out what Cal had been up to, pay-back was required and a scheme that would outrank anything they had ever done began to take shape.
Again, it was not an easy movie to watch but we need to see these kind of films to be reminded that there are places in this world where gays and lesbians are not safe without others to back us up. And don't be fooled that America is exempt from this hatred (it has only been a few short years since the incident of Matthew Shepherd occurred). Many hate us and would rather see us dead or never born than to see us walking around gay and proud.
But, back to the film itself and what I think made it not just a good movie but a great one. Near the end of the film there was a scene where no words were spoken. Two actions were taken by two of the characters in the film one of which was a request for forgiveness and the other was a granting of that request. The scene simply accomplished what the most elaborate words could have never achieved. It was a scene that will live forever in my memory. Rent the DVD when it comes out in October and see if you can pick out the scene I'm talking about.

Shank is a blistering British indie pulsating with untamed sexuality and aggression. Cal (Wayne Virgo) is a handsome teenage thug so desperate to hide his gay cravings from his fellow gang members that he binges on drugs, secretive anonymous sex and acts of violence. But the bad boy s secret desires are uncovered when he rescues a kind-eyed French exchange student from one of the clan s sadistic hate crimes. Though the two boys fall passionately in love, Cal s crew is bent on revenge for his betrayal and the young lovers are placed in unspeakable danger. Unapologetic and as poignant as it is shocking, Shank is a must see...
