OK, briefly, women's prison movie, two guys show up, they help the girls escape, kill warden, the end. Franco, so that means a lot of silly camera effects, but no red and green lights this time. I think that about covers it.
The most interesting thing about this particular version is that everyone is topless, all the prisoners, most of the guards and even the (female) warden, all the time. Aside from lingerie, they don't even appear to own tops! There's a lot of R sex and nudity, and that's about it, practically no torture or whipping (which, considering Franco's lack of skill in filming such scenes is probably a blessing). There's also a lot that makes no sense, like, what exactly is the topless chain gang trying to accomplish hacking at the soil most of the way through the picture? And why, after all their breasts get dirty from working all day, is there no shower scene? There should be ten shower scenes in this thing, it looked pretty hot and sweaty to me, wherever it was filmed. Of course, the main purpose of shower scenes is to display some nudity, and there's no need for an excuse here, this looks like a nudie parody of a women's prison film.
Well, never mind, picking at a Franco film is a pretty empty exercise, but there's really not much here for fans of sex sleaze, despite the screaming DVD box descriptions, as usual. There's one minor pinning the medal on the prisoner (no shirt and no medal), but it pales next to the "Wicked Warden" pin scene. But all those swinging and bouncing boobs . . . we'll have to give it two stars for the NTRL factor alone (nudity to total running length), which is about 98%, a record.

Marquis De Sade: Dark Prince (1997) Review

Marquis De Sade: Dark Prince (1997)

Im fed up! I can't rely on the movie industry to put out a reasonable, (purely)fact-based representation of the Marquis' life!I actually had high hopes for this movie bacause it was said to be based on the true story. SORRY! TRY AGAIN! I was apalled!Bad acting, bad directing, horrible story line, and low budget. Thats not even all of it. When are the creators of movies going to realize that enough happened in his life that its not even nessesary to make things up? Theres no way in [heck] that the things that happen in this movie could have happened, so why proclaim it "based on a true story"? It's clear to me this is not so, and that he is merely a character in a line of events (so distorted and rearanged!) based on a loose description of De Sades' life (with some conveinient changes).I'm sorry, but I thought this movie was atrocious, and I once again wait to see a biographical movie worthy to carry his name.

Exorcism (1981) Review

Exorcism (1981)
Average Reviews:

EXORCISM is a good but not great film. Like so many of Franco's films EXORCISM is at once brilliant and amatuerish. Franco stars as a kinky priest who serves GOD by ridding the world of sinners with his "Sword of the Lord." Crimes of Passion anyone? His best moments are shared with his lover/partner Lina Romay. It's always interesting to watch the couple interact together especially during sadistic scenes. Towards the end of the commentary track Producer Kevin Collins asks Franco how many times he has been killed on film? A more interesting question is how many times has Jess Franco killed Lina Romay on film?
Despite it's strong scenes of violence EXORCISM is not a gory film. The bloodiest scenes involve the beheading of a pigeon and the removal of a woman's entrails. Franco claims (on the commentary track) that the pigeon is a special effect. I seriously doubt that what Franco says is true. The film budget was much too small to afford such a fine effect and the disembowelment is further proof of Franco's meager budget. When the murdered woman is found by police her body (which should be mutilated) is smeared with thin blood. Not a single puncture wound to be found. Now, it is true that the excessive gore was added after Franco completed the film but a smear of blood on the body of a woman who has just been repeatedly stabbed to death is not quality special effects. You do the math.
The presentation of the film is not the best but it is superior and much clearer than its various video incarnations. EXORCISM is marred with bad edits (one abrupt edit even startled Franco), faded color, and unsteady frames. The commentary track by Jess Franco and his current producer Kevin Collins is a mixed blessing. Franco's English is a bit rough and the director is getting on in age. There are many moments when he gets on a roll but because of his low voice and difficulty with the language it is hard to understand him. During Franco's clearer moments he provides an insightful and often amusing commentary. The DVD also comes with an alternate clothed sequence which contrasts sharply with the nudity filled beginning, a trailer, and production photos. The keepcase is attractive and versatile. One side of the cover is the Synapse artwork for EXORCISM and the other contains the airbrushed art from the old Wizard Video case.

Macumba Sexual (1983) Review

Macumba Sexual (1983)

I liked this. I bought it together with Franco's "Mansion of the Living Dead" and while I found the latter disappointing, this earlier work from 1981 is closer to the classic Franco that I enjoy. It is sexploitation done well and with class. Lina Romay is in her second role as the blond-wigged Candy Coster. She is fuller-bodied than in her previous films but not as chunky as in "Living Dead". Here she plays the lovely Alice Brookes who has recurrent nightmares about a black Princess and her slaves. For some reason, the trio repeatedly attack and ravish her. She takes a trip to the Princess' desert island home to find out more. Her husband also goes in search of the Princess and ends up enslaved. What does Princess "Oingo-Boingo" have in store for Alice? Well the plot's just an excuse for naked bodies and kinky sex. The black transexual, Ajita Wilson plays Princess Obongo. Kudos to her plastic surgeon. She looks perfect. Take Amazon's editorial comments with a pinch of salt. It doesn't quite amount to the "fever dream of unbridled depravity" or "erotic shocker" as advertised, but it is still fun to sit through. Highlights include the Spanish couple who are led around like dogs on leashes, Alice's libidinous welcome by the Princess and her slaves and a nice scene with the ivory phallus...
Watch for Jess Franco's extended cameo as the local "retard" at the beach resort. The film is beautifully shot on Gran Canaria on Spain's Canary Islands.
Once again, Severin impresses with its beautiful transfer of the fully restored and remastered print. It is presented in its original 2.35:1 OAR (Anamorphic) and looks simply gorgeous. The original Spanish 2.0 Mono track is provided with optional English subtitles. The only Extra is a 22-minute interview segment with Franco and his wife Lina Romay. They discuss the film, Ajita's sexuality, how they met and how they've stayed together for over 20-years. Interestingly, Franco conducts the entire interview in English while Lina Romay speaks completely in Spanish. Optional English subtitles are provided and I'd advise you to turn them on, more to understand Franco's garbled English than Romay's Spanish.

It is the film that shocks even the most hardcore connoisseursof Euro-Sex sagas, a fever dream of unbridled depravity from the bizarremind of writer/director Jess Franco! The ever-alluring Lina Romay - as heralter ego 'Candy Coster' - stars as a young wife haunted by erotichallucinations of the mysterious Princess Obongo (an eye-poppingperformance by allegedly transsexual Ajita Wilson of SADOMANIA fame). Butthis self-proclaimed 'Goddess Of Unspeakable Lust' has still more in storefor this yuppie sexpot and her unsuspecting husband, including lesbianecstasy, frenzied threesomes, bisexual orgies and beyond!Robert Foster(MANSION OF THE LIVING DEAD) and Jess Franco himself co-star in this lushlyatmospheric and relentlessly erotic shocker, now fully restored from therecently discovered original negative, with all-new Bonus Materialsfeaturing Jess & Lina, and presented totally uncut & uncensored for thefirst time ever in America!

Lorna The Exorcist (1974) Review

Lorna The Exorcist (1974)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Mondo Macabro unleashes yet another rare entry in the pantheon of perversity from the demented mind and elder statesman of Eurosleaze extraordinaire, Jess Franco, and the results are noteworthy to all Francophiles and Eurotrash enthusiasts alike. For the first time on dvd, we're treated to a 'lost' gem from the early 70's, probably Jess's most prolific period of filmmaking, and certainly ranking high among those films worth watching.
A French film from 1973, with only a few folks seeing it upon its initial release, the original print was lost or destroyed. It was later recut into a porno flick back in the early 80's by its producer, and most of the cut scenes were never recovered. This restoration utilizes three different 35mm sources and four different audio sources and, seeing as how it's been cobbled and sewn together much like Frankenstein's monster, the finished film quality is quite remarkable all around. It must have truly been a labor of love by Mondo Pete and Co., and a round of applause is well-deserved. Granted, there are an inordinate amount of jumpy edits and disjointed scenes, but this is a quality inherent in all Franco flicks, some more than others, but this time we can give him the benefit of the doubt and blame someone or something else... personally, I was impressed with the results.
Being a noted jazz aficionado, the directorial credits again go to Clifford Brown, the legendary trumpet player who frequently worked with drum wizard Max Roach, though we all know Jess helmed the camera, wrote the script (probably on his palm), edited and appears as the doctor in a mental ward, among other chores in this film. The widescreen ratio seems correct, and its languages are English audio or French with English subtitles. I viewed it in French w/ English subs, and aside from some occasional hiss, the sound was near perfect for a film of its age and history.
The title's a bit misleading, as there's no exorcist or exorcism anywhere to be found (see 'Exorcism' from 1974 on the Synapse label for Franco's take on that genre), this one's another Faustian pact tale or a perverse retelling of 'The Devil and Daniel Webster'. Patrick, a down-on-his-luck businessman, had an affair with a woman, Lorna, who was also a Succubus eighteen years ago, who enabled him to gain wealth, a happy family and prosperity. As it turns out, she reappears now to collect a debt in the form of his daughter, Linda (Franco's muse, Lina Romay), on her eighteenth birthday, while the family's vacationing at a casino resort. When Patrick unequivocally states that he will not relinquish his daughter to her, Lorna infects his wife (Jacqueline Laurent, who also appears in 'Sinner', another great, recent Mondo release) with the worst case of crabs you could ever imagine. It would be heresy to divulge more about that one. Patrick has to stop Lorna before she destroys his family and himself, and time has just about run out.
Now, on to the good stuff - the sleaze quotient's been cranked up to a Spinal Tap '11' everywhere - Lina Romay looks about as attractive as I've ever seen her (this was made around the time of 'Female Vampire'), and if you were her gynecologist you couldn't see more of her, Jacqueline Laurent is a fine specimen of middle-aged splendor (before the term MILF was coined) and looks fabulous writhing around a bed nude, and Pamela Stanford would be fine if she didn't have some bizarre transvestite eye-makeup on to make her look 'occult-like', but her form is not easily forgotten. Franco friend and regular Howard Vernon makes his usual cameo (doesn't this guy own a mirror or a comb?) that is easily forgotten seeing as he doesn't speak a word. Back to the naughty bits - there's gratuitously abundant full-frontal female flesh on parade, plenty of clam-shucking and box lunches to be had, more bush than the African Serengeti, and the afore-mentioned vaginal 'Attack of the Crab Monsters'. (Roger Corman would be proud).
As usual, we can always count on MM to heap loads of extras our way - this time out there's an 'About the Film' featurette, a cast and crew bio, 'Fear and Desire' on Franco, writer Stephen Thrower comments on 'Lorna', deleted and extended scenes, an interview with Gerard Kikoine on working with Franco (but it's the same one that's used on 'Sinner: Diary of a Nymphomaniac') and the extended 'More from Mondo Macabro' trailers that never get old. Kudos to these folks for delivering the goods to an eagerly-waiting audience yet again.
This is another example of what Jess does best - feverish, erotic delirium that's barely coherent but hauntingly mesmerizing to the Nth degree. God Bless him.
