The Savage Is Loose (1974) Review

The Savage Is Loose (1974)

The odd subject of this screenplay could only have been made into a movie during the sex-ploitation craziness of the early '70's. Produced, directed, and eventually distributed by Scott (ostensibly because not even the major studios would touch it) the movie is about a man, who, with his young wife (real wife, Trish Van Devere) and their 4-year old son, David (played by both Lee Montgomery and John Carson) get marooned on a desert island in 1907, the only survivors from a ship that crashes onto the rocky shore during a terrible storm at sea. Five years later, it's 1912, and the toddler is now a happy-go-lucky 9-year having the time of his life in what starts out like a realistic version of "Swiss Family Robinson". However, once the lad starts going though puberty over the next few years, we are lead to realize (as the voyeurs that we are) there is no outlet for his growing desire for the opposite sex, except for the only woman of the island, namely, his mother.
Eight more years pass, and now David is a very healthy, vibrant 17-year old man. His father taught him well - to be self sufficient in a world where the strong survive and the weak must die. Driven by lust after his mother, he creates a sort of "sex dummy" out of coconut shells, canvas bags from the ship, and other materials around the island. His mother eventually stumbles upon it in the jungle and is horrified by what her son has become. Soon she learns that he plans to kill off his own father so that he - being the stronger of the two males on the island - will reap the spoils, that is, his mother.
The movies drifts off at this point like the raft Mom and Dad built to escape their son, which David sets loose in order to keep them from fleeing the island. While the father is away hunting down his son for a confrontation, David sneaks into his mother's hut and holding up the Bible, demands to know where Cain's wife came from if his mother, Eve, was the only woman on the planet. He tears the crucifix from around her throat and leaves her in shock while he turns to hunt down his own father.
David's mother gets the hint, so she burns down the treehouse and the huts, lets loose the animals, and waits at the edge of a cliff with a knife behind her back to kill her son when he finds her. Will she take her own life as well now that she's destroyed her home, her only protection from the jungle? Meanwhile, David has captured his father and has him hog-tied in the jungle where the fire from the huts is heading. Unfortunately, the incestuous theme is never developed, and eventually, David finds his mother, but before he rapes her, he is suddenly overwhelmed by guilt and confusion. He drops to his knees in tears, his mother drops the knife, embraces her crying son, and just as her husband (having escaped the fire with 3rd degree burns all over his body) is about to plunge a spear into his son's back, she holds up her hand in protest. He backs off, she kisses her son on the lips, and he kisses her back - passionately. The camera pulls away and focuses on the derelict on the beach, and we are frustratingly left to ponder what happens, assuming the three eventually accept the unusual relationship of their strangely particular situation.
The movie is gorgeously photographed and Miss Van Devere is stunningly beautiful throughout the film, but it is a very long, drawn out, and quite frankly, a boring production. I ended up looking for the rescue ships myself - hoping for some life to be kicked into this Oedipal study of a civilized family ending up marooned on a desert island, and slowly becoming savage in their characters.
Hence, "The Savage is Loose" works neither as an adventure film, nor as an exploration into psychological melodrama. It's been out of print for a very long time, and there is a reason for this. However, for movie philes or George C. Scott fans (if there is such a group) you may be able to find grainy used videos selling on Ebay or Amazon, and you may still be able to download it from the public domain for free, as I did - before deleting it.

Fast Lane to Malibu/Fast Lane to Vegas (Unrated) Review

Fast Lane to Malibu/Fast Lane to Vegas (Unrated)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Here are the plots for the two movies:
Fast Lane to Malibu. Brian has a fight with his girlfriend Monica (Renee Rea). Thinking she's through with him, he agrees to go to Malibu with his friend Zach. There's a sorority party there that's supposed to be a guaranteed weekend of eager, horny women. Monica finds out and convinces her friend Ashley (Tracy Ryan) to help her chase him down so she can tell him she still loves him.
Fast Lane to Vegas. Zach and Brian are headed to Las Vegas for Brian's wedding to Monica. Along the way they encounter many opportunities to have sex with beautiful women. In Las Vegas, Monica and Ashley have a couple of opportunities for their own bit of fun with a hotel employee and a male stripper.
That alone probably would have been good enough to make these above average softcore films, but the producers have also thrown in another little bit of fun. Throughout the films, there are several places where the characters are faced with a decision. The viewer gets to decide what they do. It's a good use of DVD technology and keeps things interesting.
The stories provide plenty of opportunity for numerous sex scenes and ample amounts of female skin.
In Malibu, there's a sexy hitchhiker (Stephanie Schwartz), the mechanic's horny wife (Susan Featherly), and two hot female cops (Kira Reed and Nikki Fritz). There are nine sex scenes. Five are boy/girl, one is boy/girl/boy/girl, two are girl/girl, and one is girl solo. In addition, there is a nice shower scene with Renee and a wet t-shirt contest that Renee and Tracy participate in. All the women are super hot and give great performances. The music is a little too loud, but you can still hear the sounds of the actors during the sex scenes.
In Vegas, there are nine sex scenes. Five are boy/girl, two are boy/girl/girl, one is boy/girl/boy/girl, and one is girl solo. I thought all but one of the sex scenes were very good. The other one was just decent, mostly because the two girls were just phoning in their parts. The women include A list stars like Renee, Tracy, Mia Zottoli, Sasha Rochelle, and Flower Edwards. The rest of the women are plenty attractive, just not in the same league as those five. All the sex scenes play out to completion, and you can hear the sounds of the actors during the sex scenes over the music. The music isn't as loud as it was in Malibu.
These are two great movies at a bargain price. Very recommended.

Emmanuelle 2 - The Joys of A Woman Review

Emmanuelle 2 - The Joys of A Woman
Average Reviews:

This rating is not for the movie which is good and every bit what the other reviewers have noted. My beef is with the DVD which is 85 minutes and even shorter than the VHS version which is 92 minutes. Can someone tell me why? If anything, the director's cut should have been produced on DVD. What a disappointment!

Emmanuelle (1974) Review

Emmanuelle (1974)
Average Reviews:

It is amazing that over a quarter of a century since its original release that Emmanuelle remains in the top three best selling French films on video. But is it so remarkable? Here we have a piece of pure eroticism which has scarcely been matched in all those years. Emmanuelle is not about explicit sexual action - those that buy it will be disappointed if that is what they expect, with the exception of the notorious nightclub smoking scene which I feel sure director Just Jaeckin must now regret including. If it is possible to feel outraged by anything when watching a movie about sex, then this scene provokes that reaction. No, this is a mainstream movie which has the power to move both men and women viewers - not least because of a towering central performance by the gloriously sexy Ms Kristel. She is never self-conscious about her body nor at the same time ever flaunts it. Her nudity is completely natural and her joy in her exploration of her sexuality totally convincing.
This is because Kristel - and a high-profile supporting cast - are all extremely capable actors, and are very well directed by Jaeckin. I guess one should not take the overall premise of totally liberated sexual experimentation too seriously, but you completely believe in the characters and want them to come out of the other side unscathed. I first saw this movie as an 18-year-old on its original release, saw it again with its original French dialogue in Paris several years later and have watched it countless times on video and TV since. Yet it still retains the same erotic charge as it did all those years ago. How Kristel managed to completely fail to live up to it in her subsequent films is completely beyond me. The rest of her Emmanuelle series are unsexy and even seedy by comparison and her ventures into American films offered her nothing of any substance. I believe Hollywood missed a glorious opportunity to create an top international star.

Another 9 1/2 Weeks (1997) Review

Another 9 1/2 Weeks (1997)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There is a point in the movie where John tells Lea "You just don't get it, do you?"
All I can say is that the screenwriter and director of the sequel just don't get it. The magic in the original 9 1/2 weeks was the power and control games - that is what made the sexual tension between John and Elizabeth so captivating. The sex scenes themselves weren't even all that explicit, but the foreplay and interaction was so intruiging that the viewer can imagine how hot the sex itself was. Even just Mickey Rourke's way of staring at Kim with that supreme self-confidence and knowing smile was enough to make the movie "en fuego" (on fire).
Another 9 1/2 weeks, by contrast, is full of gratuitous sex scenes with no real force behind them. John is jaded and has given up on his previous style of seduction. He no longer holds the sex appeal he had in the original movie - no confidence, no little smile. At the same time, Lea is just pathetic as she tries to egg him into playing his old games. The ending is a predictable and shameless rip-off of the original.
If you're looking for more in the style of the original 9 1/2 Weeks, I recommend you buy the book by Elizabeth McNeill. It is more violent and graphic, but extremely well written, and lets you dive into Elizabeth's mind as the power gap between she and John slowly widens and she abandons all control.

The Dreamers (Original Uncut NC-17 Version) Review

The Dreamers (Original Uncut NC-17 Version)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
...this film is (for the lack of a better word) a dream--a dream you would not willingly want to wake up from. Completely and utterly mesmerizing, "The Dreamers" pays homage to film, Paris, the 60's, and love. Apart from some of the awkward moments this movie tends to present sporadically, the movie itself was not mired by the abnormalities of some of the main characters. Though, this movie is one of the greatest I've ever viewed, it is not for everyone and cannot be readily recommended without reviewing some of the pros and cons I caught.
CONS:
-First off, if you're offended, in any way, by frontal nudity from either sex... caution: it contains a lot!
-For some, if the ending is a chief factor in deciding that you like a movie, it is possible you could be dissapointed (it ends in an unlikely manner). But if you can appreciate the ending, it doesn't hurt the film at all... Maybe people were disappointed by the ending because they didn't want it to end :)
-If not accustomed to slower-moving movies, based on a load of story depth or the like opposed to action or thiller movies, then it could be a let down.
But the cons are heavily outweighed by the pros...
PROS:
-For film buffs, Bertolucci doesn't dissapoint. The b/w segments intermingled within the storyline are anything short of genius and, for me, was the most beautiful and spellbinding part of this movie.
-For anti-censorship viewers, this movie could seem to be sent from heaven, because it doesn't leave much out.
-The acting is on a par with almost perfection, all three main characters are played flawlessly and completely take on the people they are supposed to evoke... Eva Green is especially amazing.
-The soundtrack is excellent as well. The tone that the music sets is completely appropriate and only adds to the dreamy atomsphere of the film; totally reminiscent of the 60's.
-A perfect representation of Paris in the 60's; eventhough the film's centerpoint is the main characters and their relationship with one another, the artist's home of Europe couldn't be portrayed to be more gorgeous (with the exception of the student riots in foreground).
It is difficult to stop thinking of this movie, even between viewing other movies... if I could i'd give it six stars.
