(More customer reviews)In this movie, a young Tom Berenger portrays a young man in Post-World War II Hungary who falls in and out of love with numerous older women. His character's infatuation with older women begins as a child during the war, when he loses his virginity to a middle-aged prostitute. From there, he moves to Budapest to go to college, and moves in with an older woman, portrayed by Karen Black. They fall in love with each other. Then the woman's best friend, portrayed by Canadian stage actress and artist Marilyn Lightstone, joins them in social events. Eventually, Ms. Lightstone's character seduces Berenger's character, and in a memorable scene of seduction, she entices him to have sex with her on the living room floor. But Ms. Black's character catches them in the act, and she breaks up with Berenger's character and kicks him out. Berenger then falls in love with a female resistance leader during the 1956 Hungarian Crackdown by Russian troops and tanks. She departs for deep cover, and Berenger's character emigrates to Canada. It is there that he begins a relationship with a woman more closer to his age, portrayed by a young Helen Shaver. Eventually they engage in a erotic strip scene before having sex together. But they end up breaking up also. At the end of the film, Berenger is now a teacher, who sets up a date with a younger female student, and the film ends. The eroticism is very good in this film, but it leaves you wanting more. For me, Marilyn Lightstone, despite her little screen time, stole the spotlight with her eroticism and her sexy body. Helen Shaver shows that she is willing to put out in a movie, also. She would go on to even greater levels of eroticism in the movie "Desert Hearts". Unfortunately, Tom Berenger never lived up to the potential to be a "leading man" actor that this film showed promise of when it was made. Instead, he was confined to character roles, such as in the movie "Gettysburg". But this film gives the viewer a glimpse of what Tom Berenger could have been had mainstream Hollywood had given him his chance to shine.

First Degree Review

(More customer reviews)Made for cable, "First Degree" has more twists than a bag of pretzels, and is in many ways over-plotted, but for TV fare, it's entertaining, and has some interesting characters in the story. Detective Rick Mallory (Rob Lowe) is called in to investigate the murder of a rich businessman, and almost immediately falls for the beautiful widow Hadley (Leslie Hope). Before you can say "whodunit," they are madly in lust. The question that needs answering is who committed the murder? Did Hadley hire a hit man? Was it Joe the gangster? Suspicions abound, and sometimes the plot gets a little muddled, but the cast is attractive, and the lovely soundtrack by Bruce Fowler adds to the enjoyment of the film.
Det. Mallory's precinct buddies (Tom McCamus and Joseph Griffin) are clever and amusing, and most endearing is Jacob the writer (Peter Boretski), who is the only one Mallory can't fool. There's a lot of drinking, smoking, and one grisly murder scene, so this police thriller is not suitable for young children. Directed by Jeff Woolnough, written by Ron Base, and with cinematography by Glen MacPhearson, "First Degree" is sleek looking, never boring, and remembering that "it's just a TV movie" helps. Total running time is 98 minutes.

Wartime Britain was host to ten of thousands of allied serviceman lonely and far from home. Many of the young women living around the military camps were swept off their feet by the young visitors romance blossomed and marriages were hastily arranged before the new husbands were posted away to war. More than one hundred thousand British war brides and large numbers of children were given berths on war-time troop transports and sailed the treacherous seas to their new lives their husband's homeland waiting in hope to be together once again. Most were bound for Canada, others to the United States, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Large groups of European women were also transported through Britain and their numbers swell the total departure figures.
Film - The War Bride - London 1941
London, most men were away at war it was the height of the Blitz, things weren't looking so good, spirits needed to be raised high, Lily (Anna Friel) and friends were looking to have fun. There had been a buzz of gossip that allied serviceman were in town, the girls rally, put on their glad rags for dancing to meet some new men. At the war dance Lily meets a Canadian soldier on leave one Charlie Travis (Aden Young) they quickly fall madly in love and with an urgency of being literally under the gun they get married before the week is out, Charlie is soon thereafter called back to the front, Lily now thinks she's also pregnant.
Two Years later, Lily has only seen her husband for thirteen days over the entire course of their marriage. She then receives word from the Canadian Embassy that she and her baby daughter are to live in Canada to wait for her husband's return. Lily's quiet sold on the idea as Charlie had told her about his place the Ranch in Canada, this also means living with her Canadian in-laws.
Remote, rural Spring Hill, Alberta, Canada isn't very welcoming; Lily turns up in her bright red lipstick matching red hat and lots of London cockney spirit, it doesn't sit well with the mother in-law Betty (Brenda Ficker) as she looks in disbelief at what her son has married and is more concerned that she won't be getting Charlie's pay check as this now goes to his new wife. Charlie's crippled sister Sylvia (Molly Parker) finds Lily's brash manner too forward for their simple life. Lily realizes she may have just swapped one horrendous existence for another as she struggles to survive with the in-laws on a dilapidated farm in the bleak wildness, she feels so alone, what has Charlie landed her in and when will he be coming home.
My Overview
This is such a lovely Film to watch. I would like to say at this point the film moves very quickly through London and it's Blitz some may feel this seems a little rushed to begin with, but this film was only done on a small budget and the point of the film is about the new life for this war bride after London, in Canada things are more drawn out which really make up for it.
Wonderful Casting, all the main characters in this film show their own wounds from this war and I mean shown from what's inside their insecurities, resentments, perceived slights or damaged self-esteem and how people in life tread careful around things simmering, restraining themselves, until a sudden point of boiling over, this is so well acted from all the cast. I also loved the many little touches to this film which made it special, like passed down stories you may have heard from your own grandparents, such as huddling together on a dance floor during a Blitz as the party continues in whispers or a wedding dress made from a table cloth due to lack of money or material just the simple touches.
It's funny, happy, sad, endearing, touching, a fascinating smart and involving story, it's a film about Hope. Working this well, Screenwriter Angela Workman loosely based her script on her own mother's life. The wonderful scenery and 1940's costumes, fabulous music from this era all add to make it great. The Cast were all very strong in this, Anna Friel who I have seen growing through the years in great productions on UK TV, this preformance on film I believe is one of her best.
Extra Information - Language Used
Lily and friends are from London's East End, so the accent used by them all would be English Cockney. Only a few London English Cockney slang words are used in passing and explained in this Film.
Great Film Recommended.

Tornado Valley (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)Tornado Valley isn't a disaster film as much as it is a study of trauma and relationships. So if you leave your expectations of action at the door, you'll enjoy this made-for-TV movie more.
The film was shot in scenic British Columbia, Canada, primarily with a cast of actors experienced in television work. While the acting was better than I would expect, the extremely beautiful Christine Chatelain gives a standout performance as Helen (which she's oddly uncredited for).
For only having a handful of movies under his belt, I thought Canadian director Andrew C. Erin did a good job with the film. The CGI effects for the tornadoes are low quality, though the set design otherwise makes up for it. Kevin Blumenfeld did a terrific job with the score, which has a real "American Beauty" feel to it.
Considering this movie was made for television, don't expect extravagant special effects; you're only getting two big twisters throughout the entire film. There's no pulse-pounding tension throughout the film, it's essentially a well-acted drama that's framed with two major twisters. I enjoyed it: Four stars as far as TV movies go, three stars if comparing it to blockbusters like Twister.

Canada Russia '72 (3-Disc Set) Review

If it isn't the eight game series of hockey superpowers in '72 than you're not Canadian and you're not a hockey fan. The television produced film from our neighbor to the north documents this titanic true encounter in the documentary style film `Canada Russia '72.'
For those of us old enough to remember the mood of the times when the Summit Series took place we understand how monumental these games were. The fact that they took place at all is a miracle in itself. The Cold War between East and West was at its zenith and without the vast communication network available today little was known about Russia and its population. The only thing we knew for sure that we hated them and they hated us. You couldn't ask for a better scenario for a film could you? This was a multi-layered cultural exchange with far-reaching ramifications encompassing athletic supremacy, political and ideological superiority and religious justification. Truly a contest for the ages.
'Canada Russia '72' was nominated for four Geminis (Canadian Emmy's): best direction, best casting, editing and supporting actor, winning in the category of editing and best supporting actor (Judah Katz as Alan Eagleson). It was also nominated for two Directors Guild Awards for editing and Best mini-series, winning again for best editing. Personally my favorite performance was delivered by Gabriel Hogan in the role of Ken Dryden (who also happens to be one of my favorite players of all-time). Not only did he look perfect for the part but in my estimation he was the heart and soul of the production and the glue that held the storyline together. Other favorites were Chris Szarka as Pete Mahovlich, John Bregar as Bobby Clarke, David Berni as Phil Esposito and David Miller as series hero Paul Henderson.
Being a Canadian production it obviously concentrates on the emotional ups and downs of the Team Canada players while leaving the personalities of the Soviet team somewhat unexplored and one dimensional, maybe with goalie Valislav Tretiak the exception. I'm not sure if this should be acknowledged as a minor fault in the story development, or quite possibly done on purpose to emphasize the Cold War mystique of 70's Russia and how little we really knew of this vast, foreign country. Where this film excels is in its ability to capture the defiant, fiercely independent spirit of both the Canadian team and the people of Canada.
`Canada Russia `72' is a must see for any real sports addict, hockey fan or not. See for yourself what happened when East and West collided on the ice. This was truly a war of wills not to be forgotten. Labeling this eight game series the "Friendship Games" was definitely a misnomer of the highest order.

Alice (2009 Miniseries) (2009) Review

But beyond that, don't expect this SyFy miniseries to have much in common with Lewis Carroll's classic novel, "Alice in Wonderland." Instead, "Alice" is a whole different animal -- a deliciously gritty sci-fi adventure filled with action, romance, monsters psychedelic horrors, and a revolution against a drug-peddling queen. It's a little silly, but still immensely entertaining.
Alice's (Caterina Scorsone) dinner date with her boyfriend Jack (Philip Winchester) falls apart when he offers her an heirloom ring. When she chases after him, she sees him being dragged off by some suit-wearing thugs -- and promptly trips THROUGH a looking glass. Of course she ends up in Wonderland, a world of grimy urban ruins and art deco casinos. And it's ruled by the Queen of Hearts (Kathy Bates), a ruthless tyrant who keeps her populace drugged with emotions from kidnapped "oysters" (ordinary humans).
Alice ends up following the eccentric Hatter (Andrew-Lee Potts), who offers to take her to the Resistance -- but when they get there, they discover that Jack's ring is actually the Stone of Wonderland (which powers the transdimensional Looking Glass). Since everybody in Wonderland wants the Stone, Hatter and Alice end up on the run from both the Resistance and the Queen's assassin Mad March. Alice is still determined to rescue Jack and return home, but she soon finds that her boyfriend isn't quite what she thought -- and that one of her loved ones is the Queen's brainwashed slave.
The whole idea behind "Alice" is that Carroll's story was real, and that Wonderland has become a very different place in the last 150 years -- crumbling smoky cities, insectile airships, bunny-headed cyborg assassins, and a pair of sadistic interrogators called Dr. Dum and Dr. Dee. It's a far darker, more complex affair than Carroll's books, and that's what makes it so brilliant.
There's plenty of sci-fi action and chaotic battle scenes, including aerial chases, bombing runs and the occasional attack from the grotesque Jabberwock; and the writers keep the complex plot flowing along nicely. But they also keep the story grounded with a love triangle between Alice, Jack and Hatter, as well as Alice's quest to free the oysters and a long-lost family member. And there's just enough humor to keep it from being excessively grim ("We don't have to use a user manual, do we? I HATE user manuals").
Problems? A few of the homages (the grinning cat, the "drink me" bottle) are pretty superfluous, and the siege of skeletal soldiers is kind of silly (especially the "Hit them with everything we've got").
Scorsone makes an excellent modern Alice -- intelligent, capable and capable of butt-kicking her way out, but still vulnerable and young ("You don't remember me!"). Potts makes a deliciously quirky, sexily disheveled Hatter, and Frewer rounds out the main trio as a mildly insane White Knight. Winchester and Colm Meaney are also excellent, Tim Curry is brilliant but underused, and Kathy Bates absolutely rules as the casually cruel, petulant Queen. And yes, she does say "off with his head!"
I don't know what beloved children's story will get reworked next, but "Alice" does a great job with Lewis Carroll's classic novel -- lots of action, a touch of romance, and just enough surreality.

(More customer reviews)I haven't been this happy to watch a comedy series, or anything for that matter, in I don't know how long!
Ricky, one half of the main character force, is powerfully ignorant; forcefully ignorant. Everything he causes to go wrong becomes somebody else's fault through his warped rationalization. He's uselessly wise about his own stupidity. It's a thing of beauty to behold! He's constantly setting up people with Knock Knock jokes that don't actually follow the Knock Knock rhythm just so he can tell people to f*** off. Each time he does this, I laugh harder than the last time! Rob Wells plays this character to the hilt and is the true comedic genius driving this entire show, in my opinion.
Julian is the straight man/tough guy/brains of the outfit. He comes off as seeming more intelligent but it's only because he has more poise. He's almost as stupid as Ricky. It does not matter what is going on, to include action scenes, Julian is NEVER without his rum and Coke, ice tinkling in the glass. It kills me!
Something is clearly dysfunctional about Bubbles in a fundemental fashion, and yet he is the most intelligent citizen in the park. He passionately curses non-stop in a way as natural to him as taking the next breath. His blisteringly foul language often pops up in the most benign of situations causing the funny quotient to leap upwards.
There's a guy who never wears a shirt, wears too tight white pants, has a huge belly, and there's no explanation given, ever, for why he's like this.
The "Bottle Kids" randomly appear to smash bottles on people's windshields or homes, while the people are there, and this is an accepted part of life in the park. These brief, yet intense little violences hit when you least expect them. I'm telling you. it's funny!
Ricky's six year old daughter rolls her own smokes.
As you might guess, I could really carry on about this show. It's spectacular! Comedy's audience is sometimes elusive but if you're a fan of stereotype driven absurdity then don't hesitate to watch this series.

Trailer Park Boys: Countdown to Liquor Day (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)It's hard to say bad things about the boys in Canada's beloved pseudo-reality TV series, which ran 7 seasons, not counting the one-off "Say Goodnight to the Bad Guys" episode, which preceded this movie chronologically and plot-wise. There was also an Ivan Reitman-produced Trailer Park Boys Movie in 2008 (which didn't quite live up to the madness of the TV episodes).
Ricky, Julian, and Bubbles get out of prison and attempt once again, to stay out of prison. To their dismay, times have changed, and Sunnyvale has pretty much been abandoned. Bubbles's kitties are missing, and Lahey is now really off the bottle, swindling his ex-wife Barb out of property and using that deal to create the Lahey Luxury Estates. Unfortunately, the new property's main sewer runs underneath Julian's old trailer, so Lahey now has to plot to obtain Julian's land to complete his new utopia.
How is this movie different from the other brilliant Trailer Park Boys TV installments? Sarah Byrne, who was responsible for on-the-fly editing style, creating the comic timing of the earlier TV episode returns here. Blain Morris, who composed for the iconic TV theme, scores an understated soundtrack, inserting vintage country and western pieces when necessary, creating some gorgeous vistas alongside Ted McInnes cinematography. Rob Well's Ricky actually shines in some of his more serious - albeit deadpan - moments. The "battery charger advice scene" had me laughing out loud, rolling on the floor in it's sobriety: you can't jump start a dead car battery by hooking it up to your own dead battery! And the "No.1" Car Chase Scene of all time is worth the price of ticket admission alone, as the characters duel it out with a urinary swordfight in a high speed chase through downtown Halifax, Nova Scotia.
I think Countdown to Liquor Day is a Love Letter to all TPB fans. It shows that the boys are symbolically forced to "return" to something that is no longer there anymore. The sense of wonder and enchantment with the real trailers in the backdrop when the camera used to follow Bubbles in his go-cart, has now been replaced by repetitive pre-fab trailers with no distinction from one to another. Mike Smith's own Bubbles seems more like a forced caricature of Bubbles than the fresh, innocent, kitty-loving compassionate, pacific guy who won our hearts over in the film short "The Cart Boy" that started it all, some ten years ago. The other guys - J-Roc, T, Julian, seems growingly impatient with the impending typecast of their roles. The comedy in the earlier versions comes from a certain innocence of the boys thinking they will succeed, even when we know they can't. "Countdown" has a darker, more pessimistic tone: the boys seem to realize they are more apt to fail, and along with that comes a meaner, angrier streak. Where they use to look out for each other in the tight-knit trailer park community, the ethos seems to lean more towards "looking out for No.1." Phrases like "I'm not sure what success is, but I'm pretty sure it's not this," "I'm not feeling it anymore" may be read a number of ways. The boys pleading the film crew to stop filming them in the future is another Easter Egg in plain sight.
Sam "Caveman" Losco, Jacob and the Mustard Tiger, the original TV-Cyrus, and George Green, Barrie Dunn all appear, but only briefly in the backdrop. The comic duo of Trevor and Cory is long gone. Lucy, Sarah, and Trinity appear merely by duty, almost like former popular classmates showing up a for a class reunion. Even the front lawn bee with the spinning wings gets a bow out. Brian Vollmer of Helix and Alex Lifeson of Rush also make guests cameos. And of course, the two Chrysler New Yorkers almost disintegrated as a mile-marker of the evolution of TPB.
The movie is called Countdown to Liquor Day, so naturally the focus is on Jim Lahey and his lover Randy. Though John Dunsworth has pretty much exhausted every possible improvisation of FUBAR drunkenness in all previous episodes and outtakes, he carries the movie when scenes tend - as Clattenburg commented in the first TV season - to walk the tight rope between comedy and drama, and come dangerously close to toppling onto the serious side. Pat Roach is his able male lover, bickering with and nagging Jim in a domestic tale of a same sex couple.
Some of the whackiness of the earlier days are, as always, hidden in the "Deleted Scenes" section; Ricky tricking policemen into arresting innocent hunters during a liquor store holdup is a signature move, Ricky demanding from the film crew just what it is they are filming, Cyrus pulling his gun out during an academic test. There's also IMHO, a superior alternate ending that brings the focus back to Lahey and ends "Countdown" on a positive note, sending a morse code to fans like Seinfeld's final episode. There's a fun, alternate commentary track featuring the three familiar folks at the fansite trailer park boys org: Fishy Neil, Shake, and Tiggy.
The boys and creator Mike Clattenburg is in the process of creating a new show entitled "The Drunk and on Drugs Happy Funtime Hour" scheduled to air later this year. I look forward to new and great things from this troupe. My friend and I drove 1000 miles to Halifax for the premier of this movie, too poor for hotels and as a homage to Ricky...we slept in the car.

Soon, the boys will all be rich. At least that's what they've told the parole board. But when they arrive back at the park, they find it's not the same old Sunnyvale - and it's not the same old Jim Lahey, Trailer Park Supervisor. Lahey's a new man, hasn't had a drink for two years. And he has plans - BIG PLANS - for Sunnyvale. But unfortunately for Lahey, Julian stands in his way. With his big plans for Sunnyvale going down the toilet, his relationship with Randy broken down, and having the Boys back in the park is all way too much pressure for him to bear. For Jim Lahey, the countdown to liquor day is on. Meanwhile, Julian's having problems of his own and the Boys are forced to resort to doing what they know best - breaking the law. Universal. 2009.

(More customer reviews)Looking for a sophisticated and urbane entertainment to round out your comedy collection? Well forget about it and get this instead! If you've never had the privilege to sample the inspired Canadian series "Trailer Park Boys"--then it's high time (and I quite literally mean high time) you did. A quintessential slacker/stoner type comedy, these boys ran amok for seven lunatic seasons. The complete series collection has been out of circulation for some time now, so I'm pleased to see this new reissue for those that don't want to buy individual season sets. Of course, with such a hefty price tag (suggested price around $120)--you might want to preview an episode or two if you can just to be sure you're in tune with this raucous and very wrong comedy. But I will say, in my circle of acquaintances, to know the trailer park boys is to love them. That said, if you are already a fan--then nothing I can say will change your opinion. If you're a newbie, however, I can't recommend this hysterical take-no-prisoners show more highly. Note: The collection consists of 56 episodes over the seven years. The individual seasons ran between six and ten episodes unlike traditional American sitcoms.
I won't attempt to describe all of the show's shenanigans in this format, but will say that the show centers around two petty criminals named Ricky and Julian. Early seasons traditionally opened up with the boys being released from jail, but by the finale--more often than not, they were headed back. With the assistance of the oddly brilliant Bubbles (who dispenses great repeatable quotes every time he's on the screen), you can rely on the boys to have certain things permanently on their mind. They want to get rich, they want to stay out of jail, and they want to stay high. Their outlandish and ludicrous schemes are primarily derailed by their own ineptitude in outrageous style. But in case they need even more trouble, the trailer park manager and his shirtless sidekick are always ready for a confrontation. Later seasons shifted the format somewhat with the boys approaching success by finale time only to have them picking up the disastrous pieces by the next year's opener.
In case you haven't guessed, "Trailer Park Boys" is rude, crude, and lewd--all in the best ways. Eschewing political correctness at every opportunity, this show is not afraid to be offensively funny. Leads Robb Wells and John Paul Tremblay invest Ricky and Julian with enough recognizable humanity that you'll commiserate with their failures even as you laugh at them. John Dunsworth, as their principle foil, is quite funny (and frankly, you've got to feel bad for him sometimes)--while shirtless Patrick Roach makes a delightfully off-kilter nemesis. But saving the best for last, Mike Smith as Bubbles is the show's crowning glory. Moving from scene stealing support to a full fledged star over the years, his delivery and timing are impeccable. I love this guy and the writers support him with some of the smartest, funniest lines imaginable. He's a true tribute to cat lovers everywhere. Tired of traditional American sitcom fare and looking for something a bit edgier? Then hitch on over to the trailer park, you'll be glad you did. KGHarris, 4/11.

As 35 year-old, mini-van driving parents of 2 and middle managers at work you'd never guess that we'd LOVE this show but its ADDICTIVE and we own every season and the xmas special. If you're looking for pee-your-pants funny, escapist material this is it! After a hard day at work just grab a rum & coke and some pepperoni and press play! You can watch this over and over when you need a good laugh and it always does the trick.

Trailer Park Boys - The Complete Sixth Season 6 - Deluxe 2 Disc Set Review

(More customer reviews)If you are a dedicated fan of this series and have not seen season 6, be ready for a bombshell ending. Listen very closely to what is said in the last line of the last episode of the season. (No spoilers, watch for your self!)
The show has truly hit its stride in this season and the writing is at its best. The physical humor of Rob Wells is hilarious and the female characters are finally a little more realistic.
The series is known for weaving together arcing storylines through an entire season, as well as within each episode, and director Clattenberg and the writing team have surpassed any previous season.
Depending on your point of view, the relative happy ending for all of the characters involved in this season is either a ludicrous proposition or utterly charming.
What else can I say? Season 6 is filled with hilarious and memorable dialogue and all the references to dope and guns you expect. This is a classic piece of television.

(More customer reviews)The Trailer Park Boys...what can I say...if you get the white trash street humor you will love it, if you don't you won't like it. This series is a "mockumentary" that follows hapless knuckleheads and all of their trailer park neighbors through daily life. Their whole life is about scams, smokin' and growin' "dope" (weed), going to jail and fighting with the trailer park supervisor, who is an alcoholic former cop who treats the park as his city. It is hilarious from start to finish. The actors are so good, you actually would believe they are as dumb as they appear in show, but brilliant is more the description. I highly recommend getting the entire series and watch from the first episode to let the characters develop, you will not be disappointed. If you're hesitant to buy the entire series, rent from net flix first and see if you like the trailer park humor. There are also many clips on you tube.

It's so much better a comedy than anything I've seen. We don't get any Canadian TV where I am. Thank heavens for DVD's!
