This film is definitely on my top ten list of funniest movies of all time, with "Some Like it Hot," "National Lampoons Christmas Vacation" and the Monty Python masterpieces...
But this DVD is atrocious. The soundtrack is all in the center channel... haven't heard anything worse since I gave up watching a TV with a 3 inch speaker. The theme song is burbled and warbly. There is no separation -- even to the front speakers. The dialog is flat as a flitter.
The picture quality is a hair better than off the air, rabbit ear antennae reception. At times the picture is choppy and halting -- as if you were watching it on a rental video that has been viewed too many times.
The only extra is the film's trailer.
Wait for a re-release before buying!

(More customer reviews)Abbot & Costello: Funniest Routines Vol 1 is a great collection of classic routines from my favorite comedy team. There is close to an hour and a half of comedy on the disc, and they're the type of bits the whole family can enjoy.
There's a wide variety of stuff here, and it all looks great. Two of the bonus features have been colorized, the rest are presented from a great B&W print, that is probably the best one I've seen. The bonus features that are presented in color are the Trailer for "Abbot & Costello Meet Frankenstein" and a Campbell's Soup commercial. Here's hoping for an all out colorized version of A&C Meet Frankenstein!

Definitely pick this one up and pass on the sequel as that one overdoses on the fart jokes. This one uses a multi-joke formula all the way to success.

The reviewers who did not like it clearly expected something for small kids. It is not. It is very abstract in places, especially the art, which is really quite amazing. Watch for the design of the panthers, and the bats. And the landscapes. Wonderful stuff.
And the dialogue and the delivery especially is just hilarious. How you can get such delivery in an animated film is beyond me.
Warmly recommended for mature viewers with an edgy sense of humor.

In an age where you can quite easily pay $20 for a new, single-disc release of most movies, which come with no insert other than a one-sheet "Buy more DVDs from this company"...it's refreshing to pay less than $20 for two well-made discs and a very nice, informative booklet. As a fan of Hertzfeldt, Plympton and Judge, I bought this on the strength of them, but am finding a lot more that I like on here as well. Can't wait to catch the road show when it comes to the my area.
Word of warning, most people who come to this page will already know but, some of these cartoons are rather strange. Just be forewarned, if you try to put this on in mixed company, or for people who aren't really into animation other than Family Guy and The Simpsons, I doubt they will run screaming - but they're probably going to give you some strange looks. That's one of the reasons I love them - but, it might not be a lot of people's cup of tea.
And like JONG said, for 67 cents a short, you really can't beat giving it a shot.

(More customer reviews)I bought this video today for our 3- and 1-year old kids, who love the other "Veggie Tales" they've seen. But I also bought it for myself, thinking the "Gilligan's Island" spoof would be funny, and it truly was. Larry and Bob as "The Skipper" and his little buddy were right on target - it made me embarrased to see how much I remembered about that show! The story of Junior Asparagus getting his feelings hurt by the Grapes of Wrath initiated a discussion not only about forgiveness, but also about intentional cruelty. These tapes are wonderful for starting conversations with your children concerning morals, behavior and Bible teachings. Preschoolers just beginning to understand about making a mistake or causing pain will enjoy and benefit from this video. The music, as always, is a gas.

The Sasquatch Gang (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)This movie was recommended to me by a friend, who said it was one of the funniest films he's ever seen. I'm always a little sceptical when people tell me this, as I've been tricked into watching really lame movies many times. This one, however, definitely lived up to my friend's description. I was expecting something similar to Napoleon Dynamite when I put it on, which is essentially what I got. But I believe this film is even better.
The actors all have brilliant comedic delivery (especially Justin Long as the character Zerk and his friend Shirts) and the plot is interesting and unique (something unusual for a comedy). It depicts "nerds" and "losers" in a funny and sort of affectionate way. It's really refreshing to see something like this, when all other comedies out there are either terrible teen flicks or the dreaded "romantic comedy" genre.
I've already watched it four times since I bought it, which, for me, is always a sign of a good movie. I think this would appeal to just about anyone, kids and adults alike. Definitely check it out!

Kung Fu Hustle (Widescreen Edition) (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)Kung Fu Hustle is among my favorite films, not because I am a die-hard fan of Stephen Chow, but because I really liked the wild mix of comedy, adventure, crime caper and martial arts action. Most notably the excellent fight choreography by legendary Yuen Woo-Ping(who is also responsible for the fight scenes of Kill Bill vol. 1, Fearless, The Matrix, Hero). As I said, I love KUNG FU HUSTLE and am very much looking forward for its sequel in 2008, so forgive me if I am a bit biased. (I will try my best not to lose my objectivity)
The New "AXE KICKING EDITION" soon to be released by Sony is actually the REGION-3 Hong Kong release which I have. (I am certain)The Hong Kong release is still the one to go for if you have a multi-region dvd player. Since I almost know for certain that only fans of the film will be interested in this new edition, I will skip the plot summary. ( for those of you who haven't seen it, you may look up my review under the original U.S. DVD.)
I will go straight to the differences between the previous dvd release and this new "Axe-kicking edition"(original Hong Kong release):
Mild spoilers ahead---
Scene 1; The landlady throws her husband out of a window and drops a flower pot that ended up on the back of his head. The original cut showed a small pool of blood coming from his face, but the U.S. version digitally omitted it. The blood now appears as part of the film.
Scene 2; Sing heckles/insults the residents of Pig Sty Alley and gets hit in the tummy by a woman. The original cut showed Sing spitting up blood which landed on the woman's face, but the earlier U.S. version digitally removed the blood (though some still appeared around Sing's mouth). The blood now appears in this release.
Scene 3; This may be more offensive to others; it takes place on the eve of the big attack on Pig Sty Alley. The Hong Kong cut showed a man taking a d--p onto a piece of paper as the camera panned by, but the American version digitally removed the offensive feces. Now the paper is no longer blank. "Mr. Poo" makes an appearance!
Scene 4; Sing confronts "The Beast" in the casino, he gets hit hard on the chest twice. After the 2nd hit, blood sprays on The Beast's face and Sing is shown reeling backwards from the force of the punch with blood spurting from his mouth. The U.S. version PREVIOUSLY removed both of these sequential shots.
Scene 5; Also in the casino, Sing's head is hit on his face, hammered into the ground by The Beast. After the first hit, The Beast's bloody fist is shown emerging from the floor in slow motion...but the U.S. version removed this shot entirely.
Now for the DVD Picture and Sound quality--
2.35 Anamorphic Widescreen. The Picture is extremely sharp with solid Black levels. Colors are natural and enhancements are not noticeable. CGI effects suffer a bit of softness. But the transfer is clean and nice. It is the Hong Kong transfer from what I can tell.
Sound is in 5.1 Dolby/2.0 surround in English, French & Cantonese. I am a bit disappointed why Sony still didn't include the Cantonese 5.1 DTS track as in the original Hong Kong release. Why?!

CLOSING: Kung Fu Hustle is one of the more entertaining (if not the most fun in 2004) imports. It mixes pop culture blends, over-the-top comedy, hard-hitting action while maintaining a profound respect for the spirit of Kung Fu. This new region 1 release is a bit confusing, while it contains the original cut of the film, it misses the original special features and the powerful DTS Cantonese Language track. I wouldn't advise a "double dip" for fans who own the first REGION 1 dvd, but for fans who doesn't own the movie, pick this new version up. However, the lack of DTS sound is a huge minus for this version. I STILL prefer the ORIGINAL Hong Kong region-3 release!
RECOMMENDED!! (Timidly)

Spy Hard (1996) Review

When his deceased girlfriend's daughter, Barbara Dahl, (both played by Stephanie Romanov), is captured by the evil General Rancor (Andy Griffith), Agent Steele is sent to rescue her and to stop the General from his evil plans. With the help of the beautiful Veronique Ukrinsky (Nicolette Sheridan), there is a 'slim and remote' possibility that they might succeed! Will the duo be able to save the world? Also starring is Charles Durning as The Director who has a love for 'camouflage and disguises', Marcia Gay Harden as Miss Cheevus (say her name real fast ;), Barry Bostwick as Norman Coleman, and Elya Baskin as Professor Ukrinsky.
Just looking at the names of the characters, I'm sure you suspect that this movie will have lots of puns, silly jokes, slapstick comedy, and stupid scenes. Your right! It's amazing how much silliness could be incorporated into this movie which parodies all forms of spy and action movies! The jokes at times work well though at times they fall completely flat. Also the same jokes are used a lot and come off a bit boring after many repeats. But some scenes do come off right and made my family roll off the couch laughing! Some of my favorite scenes:
*Leslie Nielsen's 'kung fu' against the Russian agent.*
*Leslie Nielsen and Nicolette Sheridan making those ridiculous faces at each other in the airplane!
*The last 'battle' with the good guys versus the evil guys.
But ultimately, 'Weird Al' Yankovic's opening credits is the best part of the whole movie! It was so extremely funny, he makes fun of some of 007 movie's opening credits. I gave this movie an extra star because of the great 'Weird Al' Yankovic.
So, to put it all together, "Spy Hard" is nothing special though it has many entertaining qualities to it. Expect lots of silliness and stupidity. On the good side is that the movie is one 1 hr. and 20 min. lots, it does not get too boring and repetitive. I recommend the movie for those who love this type of slapstick comedy. The movie is rated PG-13 because of crude humor and some sexual humor. For this reason I recommend parents to see this movie before showing their children, but I suggest that very young children shouldn't watch "Spy Hard".

The Muppets redefine themselves on the cutting edge of entertainment, put together a film of nonstop action and hilarity, pull off a rather touching ending, impart an important lesson about life to children as well as adults, and really bring their own special magic to the viewing audience. Feature films permit the Muppet universe to expand in altogether new ways. For one thing, you get to see full-body shots of Muppets doing extraordinary things (rather than having to settle for the old above the waist only shots). More significantly, in relation to this movie, there are some pretty good special effects that really make the Muppet world seem more believable than ever. All of the Muppets look great, and some relatively newer characters are nothing short of hilarious (Pepe the Prawn in particular).
Muppets From Space centers around Gonzo, the little guy with the big nose and no real history. He's tired of being a one-of-a-kind creature and yearns to know where he came from. First things first, though. The film opens with the start of a new day in the Muppet house; everyone gets up out of bed and quickly gets down with their bad selves to the funky music of "Brick House." The Muppets have definitely found the funk, and this makes for a really happening, memorable soundtrack. Just when Gonzo is really down about being alone in the world, he receives a communication from outer space (via his alphabet-shaped breakfast cereal). Soon, he is convinced that he is an alien and, what is more, he claims his alien family is on its way to earth. A certain secret agency picks up signs of the aliens and comes after Gonzo, thinking he can tell them what the aliens want and where they will land. The leader of this secret group, played by Jeffrey Tambor, is a little bit out of his mind, and Gonzo falls right into his pending trap by showing up at the local news studio to announce that the aliens are coming. The other Muppets don't really believe Gonzo's claims, but they are eager to help rescue him when he falls into the evil clutches of the Men in Black. The conclusion of the movie is a real hoot indeed, delivering a close encounter of the truly unique kind.
All of the Muppet characters are great; Kermit and Miss Piggy don't get as much screen time as usual, but that may well be a good thing. Gonzo and his roommate Rizzo the Rat (another fantastic, relatively new character) are more than capable of carrying the movie by themselves - of course, they don't have to do it alone because many of the Muppets play important parts. Pepe the Prawn absolutely steals the show, if you ask me; he may be the funniest Muppet yet created. As usual, a number of famous stars make cameo appearances in the film, including Andie MacDowell, Ray Liotta, F. Murray Abraham, Kathy Griffin, Hollywood Hogan (as his NWO self), and an always annoying David Arquette. Kids as well as adults should love this movie. Older viewers will appreciate some of the subtle nods to popular culture; for example, you will find parallels to big movies such as Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Star Trek, Men in Black, Independence Day, and The Shawshank Redemption.
This is as funny and enjoyable a Muppet movie as you will find. Don't let the kids get all of the enjoyment out of Muppets From Space, though; there are plenty of things incorporated into the plot and script to make adults smile and laugh, as well.

(More customer reviews)Honestly I have never seen the Academy Award-winning Wallace & Gromit but I am sure glad it's creators came out with Shaun the Sheep. I have seen Shaun the Sheep a few times as short skits on the Disney channel, but I didn't think much of it. When I watched this DVD, I laughed, laughed, and laughed some more! It is adorable and even though it is claymation and doesn't use spoken words. The way those mischievous sheep get into trouble with the dog trying to watch over them, and somehow the farmer never catches them!Shaun the Sheep "A Woolly Good Time" is just the newest video featuring those crazy sheep and it is 40 minutes of laughs, and I don't usually like slapstick humor. I was really surprised too that my 3-year old liked it, as he usually only likes cartoon but even he was laughing when the sheep were sneaking around! I can still picture those crazy sheep with the farmers clothes on their heads! I would definitely recommend it for all ages, not just kids!

VeggieTales - Heroes of the Bible - Lions, Shepherds and Queens (Oh My) Review

(More customer reviews)A couple of months ago I checked out the first volume of Veggietales from the local library. I found the first story to be pleasant, but when the scallions in "Daniel and the Lion's Den" started dancing and singing "Oh No!", I knew we had found a winner. My four-year-old son, my teenage daughter, and I have become big Veggietales fans, and this DVD was one of several I purchased when I decided that we had to stop borrowing the videos from the library because we just wanted to keep them for ourselves!
My son's favorite Veggietales story is still "Daniel and the Lion's Den" (it's one of my favorites, too, along with "Josh and the Big Wall"). I like the other two tales, too, but also have one question: What kind of vegetable is Esther exactly? She's the same veggie as the thankful family in the Madame Blueberry story, but I have no idea what she is (she looks like a green spoon to me, but I may be just unaware of all existing vegetables).
yes, it is a good DVD for anyone to watch.

Shaun the Sheep, appearing in the thirty minute feature "A Close Shave" appeared in the UK (and other non-U.S. nations) as seven minute Oscar winning cartoons in 2007. "Off the Baa is a collection of eight of these cartoons from the first season (listed below). Shaun is the star of farm and flock in episodes that fascinate adults and children. There are no speaking parts, but the antics stretch reality and lighten any mood using animal and people sounds.
Disney Channel seems to be the only source for Shaun cartoon broadcasts in the United States, except videos from some foreign Youtube-like sites. If you buy any videos, beware of DVD regional coding, making sure it is zero or one for the U.S. Watch for other collections of eight cartoons each - including "Wash Day", "Sheep on the Loose", "Saturday Night Shaun", and "Abracadabra". "Back in the Ba-a-ath" is also available, but I cannot find the number of episodes it includes.
A little searching will reward you with plenty of Aardman Animations videos including Shaun the sheep exercise video, BBC shorts, as well as Wallace and Grommit features, "Cracking Contraptions", full length films, cartoons, advertisements, and over a dozen new characters.. The new "A Matter of Loaf and Death" will begin to be available in June 2009 in the U.S.
Two further recommendations: First, BEWARE of torrent downloads of Shaun the Sheep series. One is a vicious scam. Second, Wikipedia has a rather complete write up on Shaun.Links too.

(More customer reviews)I read the book and thought it was funny. I'm not a Tucker Max fanboy or hater, but this movie was painful to sit through. It even made the book lose some of the humor in it because it felt so fake. If your a fan of the straight to DVD American Pie films then you may find a few laughs in this, otherwise save your time and money. The characters in this aren't interesting, the acting is bad, the plot is unoriginal and meaningless, and there just aren't many laughs. Every once in a while it will make you smirk but by the end of the movie you will have forgotten why. This is one film to avoid...

(More customer reviews)This stand up special is rooted in Patrice's unique views on topics we might have heard covered by other comics but not like this. Patrice not only makes every topic his own, he takes you places you may not have wanted to go making you laugh along the way.
He covers race, sexual harassment, cheating, relationships, animals, football all in an hour special that makes you wish he was given two hours. He has a charisma that connects with the audience that most comics (at least the comics on Comedy Central) seem to be lacking.
Patrice is one of the best comics that America has not heard of and not for his lack of talent and comedic ability. Buy this special, see him live, you will not be disappointed.

(More customer reviews)Most of the movies here are classics which makes it a problem if you don't want all the movies. The version of "Blazing Saddles" is the earlier release from Warner which doesn't look as good as the 30th Anniversary re-release and the extras aren't any great shakes. The transfer looks so-so and lacks the sharper look of the later 30th Anniversary Edition. "Young Frankenstein" resembles the first DVD release of the film from Fox with the same extras. Reportedly "Young Frankenstein" was supposed to be remastered in anamorphic widescreen but the wrong master used or the wrong discs shipped with this set. For those that care it's not anamorphic. The film looks extremely good but if you already have these classic films, I'd suggest waiting for these to be released individually.
Fans of Brooks will be buying this for the previously unreleased films "Silent Movie", "Robin Hood:Men in Tights", "To Be or Not to Be" (which Brooks didn't direct but stars in) and "High Anxiety". All these films look pretty good here (although "The Twelve Chairs" is probably going to be of the least interest to fans that grew up on Brooks other classic films). "Robin Hood" comes with an featurette produced for HBO on the film. Most of the others come only with theatrical trailer(s). "To Be or Not To Be" comes with a short featurette and some profiles of Brooks, the late Anne Bancroft and Charles Durning. Clearly they weren't produced for the DVD but must be some sort of promotional bits for another format (you're guess is as good as mine)possibly for an Electtronic Press Book.
