Booby Trap / The Takers (1971) Review

Booby Trap / The Takers (1971)

The admittedly promising DVD cover lured me to buying this SOMETHING WEIRD double feature. Well, it is not so explosive as the title and artwork suggests.
The first movie BOOBY TRAP starts with a troubled ex-marine buying 40 Claymore mines and blowing the soldier who illegally sold him the explosives to smithereens, just for the fun of it. Cheering, he breaks out in maniacal laughter and fires his pump action shotgun.
A really promising start, but what a pity that the rest of the film does not live up to the first minutes. From now on the story concerning the psycho ex-marine, who wants to use the Claymore mines to blow up the hippie audience visiting a rock concert, and a not very soldier-like looking military policeman trying to hunt the psycho down, drags. Sure, the story sounds interesting, but it sounds actually better than it is.It is much too talky and the action scenes are few and far between.
(Admittedly things liven up a little when it's showdown time.) Some female nudity and sex is on display, but nothing to write home about. And do not expect to see much explosives induced mayhem.
Sure, I can think of worse ways to kill my time, but the film is not essential viewing.
I liked the second feature THE TAKERS much better. E.J. and Willy are outlaw bikers. After a violent fight with another biker, an extended sex and drug session with two girls and a gas station hold up, the bikers raid the home of housewife Laura and her friend Barbie ("We're gonna have us a party with some educated social-type broads.") Much sexual encounters and drug abuse ensue, before Laura's husband (Carl MONSON, who played the ex-marine on the loose in BOOBY TRAP) suddenly returns from a business trip. As you probably guessed it is comeuppance time now...Oh, and there is a silly surprise ending, which will have you shake your head in disbelief. (In the stage world this is called "BRECHTian alienation effect", I think). Believe me, it is REALLY silly!
Aside from that THE TAKERS is very sleazy and fun entertainment indeed.
As can be expected from SWV company their DVD offers many extra features. There are 9 trailers. It must be said that the BOOBY TRAP trailers are better than the movie itself. Generally, all trailers are a bit too long and give away too much of the respective movies. I liked the BLACK ALLEY CATS and the BLACK BUNCH trailer best. Curiously, there is a trailer for a movie called YOUNG AND WILD, which appears to be a different cut of BOOBY TRAP with more explicit sex scenes.
Another extra is a short documentary about motorcycle freaks, THESE ARE THE ALIENS! It ends rather abruptly, so I guess it is only a part of a longer film. The bikers are shown in their favorite activities (boozing, smoking grass, having sex, and chatting about their bad experiences with the law). Recommended only for die-hard biker (movie) fans.
The usual black and white striptease short subject is also not missing. It is called MAGNIFICENT MONIQUE, rather old and with horrible picture quality (what else do you expect?) Despite these shortcomings I really liked it, mainly because of the top-heavy "actress".

Wham-Bam-Thank You, Spaceman (1975) Review

Wham-Bam-Thank You, Spaceman (1975)

I am not sure exactly what is expected from people that gave this film a poor review. It is 70's standard sexploitation schlock. No story, no acting, no dialogue. I would tend to think it rare to find ANY soft core 70's film to be much different. Still, the DVD is LOADED with great bonuses. If nothing else, consider it archival footage of the "late night after 11pm on a Friday night at Cinemax" film clip festival. There are some 6 trailers, all replete with nudity, as well as dozens of posters/ephemera of these and many other Harry Novak films that play on the screen while accompanied with audio tracks. The tracks are radio spots for these films, and I would dare anyone to find this stuff anywhere else. Best of all, there are two short films, one of which is VERY racy.
The goofy film gets 3 stars of 5 for the type of film it is. Let's not confuse it with Casablanca or Star Wars or something it should not be stacked against. The DVD itself gets 5 stars+ out of 5. A wonderful surprise to see a DVD so loaded with great stuff since the title itself is so poor.

Blood Orgy Of The She-Devils (2007) Review

Blood Orgy Of The She-Devils (2007)
Average Reviews:

What can I say about this Satanic film hmm. Well the pakaging is a little miss leading. At first glance your thinking this is a satanic porn film with hot girls dancing COMPLEATLY naked and stabbing men with spears. First of all there are only two sacrifice scenes in the whole film and the girls are not as blood thirsty as you might think. The story focuses on a witch named Mara who teaches people how to read their past lives. She acts more like a WICCAN coven leader than a Satanic witch however. It must also be known that the coven also display an anti male WICCAN feel to it as well. The film earns most of it's shock value to the past life flash backs, one scene includes a pocessed girl being stoned to death, another shows a torture and then a burning scene. If you like movies about witchcraft then try it out, but don't get it if your looking for sleazy gore and sex because your not going to find it here. By this time in cenema the witches in this movie should at least be naked as most cult films featured in the 1970s.

When I watched this one, I was reminded of the cheesy comedy of Flesh Gordon...there's all the token nudity and sexual situations...watching white people try spanish accents is pretty entertaining as well. Don't be looking for fabulous effects on this one, it's just a funny little movie, cheesy humour, erotica, might remind you of zorro the gay blade, just with nudity...

The Pigkeeper's Daughter / Sassy Sue (1975) Review

The Pigkeeper's Daughter / Sassy Sue (1975)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Up until three months ago, I was ignorant of producer Harry Novak, his soft-X filmographry or Something Weird Video, the Seattle company that's preserved these nuggets of drive-in history. Now that I've learned about them, I thank God for all three. Both "The Pigkeeper's Daughter" and "Sassy Sue" are goofy hillbilly humpathons that offer plenty of laughs, though most are of the unintentional kind. "The Pigkeeper's Daughter" has qualities more closely associated with porn: Wretched acting, a mere hint of a plot and even less of a script, and lots of extended sex scenes (which are pretty explicit for a softie). Terry Gibson (in the title role) and Patty Smith (a.k.a. Peggy Church) are about the only people anyone would want to see have sex. There's a surprising amount of male nudity--unfortunately it's in the form of out-of-shape John Keith and skinny Peter James (who has some nasty looking teeth). And what happened to the "actress" playing Gibson's mama? Her breasts look chafed and there's a horrible bruise across her lower back. Was she beaten into taking this role? (This might explain her performance.) By comparison, "Sassy Sue"--the story of a young man, his cow, and the women who try to come between them--is a much more polished effort. The acting is a little better (though it's still bad), the cast is more effective and there's actually some genuine laughs. A definite highpoint in this one is John Tull's tryst with one of the horny babes wanting some backwoods boffing ("It would help if you mooed a little," he snipes). The sex--although simulated and not quite as explicit as that in "Pigkeeper's Daughter" (there's a moment in the final scene that pushes the boundaries of softcore, however)--seems a little more genuine in "Sassy Sue." Both movies are raunchy fun, though "Pigkeeper's Daughter" is raunchier and "Sassy Sue" is more fun. Better than both movies are the trailers for other similarly-themed Harry Novak productions, like "Midnight Plowboy," "Country Cuzzins" and "Tobacco Roody." Fans of large breasts and trash cinema will definitely want to add this to their collection.

NUDTY!!!The clothes come off quick and often. Wow. The best something wierd video I've ever seen. Good looking girls big boobs, lots of bush. Its great! Both movies have alot of nudity even some quick spread eagle shots. The second film ends with a nude beauty pagent. All the girls from the movie get naked! Full Frontal. The sex is lame and very fake softcore, sept for alittle quick guy to girl oral. As far as story, lots of lame jokes and stupid plots. But it didn't matter cause all these girls like to get naked. Highly recommended!

Country Cuzzins / Midnight Plowboy (1970) Review

Country Cuzzins / Midnight Plowboy (1970)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This country sex comedy double feature is worth its weight in corn! "Country Cuzzins" is the story of a hillbilly family that finds a wealthy city snob, Cuzzin Prudence, in its very shallow gene pool. Pru may turn up her nose at her knuckle-dragging kin, but she doesn't turn away their moonshine. Before you know it she's giggling at Cuzzin Leroy's pigs and even wins the chicken chasin' contest. She invites her hick family to visit her in the city, but only so she and her "high class" friends can humiliate them (you know who'll get the last laugh). This one's hilarious. Both the chicken chasing contest and the cousins' discovery of Pru's bidet are worth the purchase of this one. The acting ranges from bad to wretched, though John Tull as Leroy and Ellen Stephens as Prudence give pretty competent performances, and Rene Bond is enjoyable in her role. Of course, the main distraction from the terrible acting and overlooked details like "rich" Cuzzin Prudence's rusty lawn furniture is all the gratuitous sex. There are naked bodies flopping all over the place--and I do mean flopping. The men in particular seem to be impersonating fish out of water when they're atop various women.
The soft-X fun continues with "Midnight Plowboy," featuring John Tull as a ...stupid country boy named Junior who hitch-hikes to Hollywood only to end up living in a whorehouse. This one has less script than "Country Cuzzins" and, astonishingly enough, worse acting. However, if Tull and Debbie Osbourne, as one of the hookers, were allowed the luxury of multiple takes, one suspects they could've turned in better-than-average performances. The actress who plays the madame (billed as Nan Cee) resembles Pat Benatar and speaks in a soothing monotone as if she's conducting a tour of a mental hospital. She keeps referring to Junior as "young man" even though there's little difference in their ages. In fact, John Tull looks slightly older. But it's this total disregard for logic or cinematic convention that makes these movies so fun to watch. Though "Country Cuzzins" and "Midnight Plowboy" are both "dirty" movies, it's hard to imagine anyone other than 12-year-old boys getting turned on by them. This DVD also has some extra nudie loops included that highlight how even porn was innocent at one time.

Diary of a Nudist / The Naked Venus (1958) Review

Diary of a Nudist / The Naked Venus (1958)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This disc is packed with stuff! There are the two movies with their very coy nudity (watch as the ladies artfully stand with their legs covering the 'rude' bits or with towels/papers/hats draped over their midsection. The picture is a good restoration of some poor quality (old poorly preserved) originals, but it is still very watchable. The movies themselves are not spectacular in their plot but still fun and interesting.
The extra's (of which there is over an hour) are the piece de resistance. You get trailers from 6 nudism related movies, extra footage from The Naked Venus, four shorts on nudity, a heap of poster art/production stills from various nudity related movies (with radio discussions over the top) and an easter egg of a nudist wedding.
About half of the extra's are in black and white (as is The Naked Venus). Some have been restored to very good quality but one or two are almost unwatchable. There is virtually no full frontal nudity, but lots of breasts and bottoms.
Everything is from the 50's and 60's and looks it (even naked, you can tell the era from the hair/makeup (sometimes this is caked on) and the cars). If you're interested in the history of nudity or nudity in films then this is highly recommended.

The Defilers/The Scum of the Earth (1965) Review

The Defilers/The Scum of the Earth (1965)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just picked this up recently and it's quickly become one of my favorite SW DVDs. The two films are quite different: Scum of the Earth, David Friedman/H. G. Lewis's final nudie as partners (with virtually no nudity!) comes across like a high school play about pornographers, while The Defilers has the look and feel of an early-1960s B&W TV drama punctuated with ... unsettling violence. Both movies feature several cast members from Blood Feast and the other Blood Trilogy movies.
Scum of the Earth's world-weary, boozing photographer Harmon (William Kerwin [Blood Feast]) snaps photos of pert blonde cheescake model Sandy, who's anxiously awaiting "retirement." (All her shots are taken with a scarf covering her chest.) She's also forced to pose in (implied) B&D shots ("Remember, I'm not double-jointed!") with hulking, violent misogynist brute Ajax. The chief smut peddler, Lang, smokes a big cigar, quotes Mozart, and plays with head-nodder dolls and a wind-up mechanical monkey. Harmon and Sandy recruit Kim (Adults Only regular Vicki Miles [Allison Louise Downe], one of the worst actresses of all time) to be groomed as her replacement. Mal Arnold (Blood Feast's mad caterer Fuad) plays surly, menacing, violent Larry, one of Lang's salesmen and apparently world's oldest teenager ("Don't forget, I'm a minor"). Harmon convinces Kim to show "the upper half" for $500 badly-needed tuition money, and she freaks out at another shoot when they photograph her face! Kim pleads with Lang to let her out of the deal in the hilarious "straight talk" scene: he excoriates her at length ("Deep down inside you're dirty. Do you hear me, dirty! You're damaged goods, and this is a fire sale."), working up a literal lather as the camera cuts in closer and closer on his sweaty, contorted mouth. Blackmail, (implied) violence, and more G-rated porn shoots ensue before the finale, which includes a baseball bat murder, shooting, police chase, suicide, and surprise wedding engagement between Harmon and Sandy! It all sounds quite lurid on paper, but it's actually rather quaint; you really expect Wally and the Beave to stroll around the corner any second. Scum of the Earth does share a rather, um, deliberate pace and minimalist production values with Friedman/Lewis's gore movies, but delivers plenty of entertainment value for aficionados of this sort of thing. Similar to Ed Wood's Sinister Urge, but with even funnier, highly quotable dialogue.
In The Defilers (directed, photographed, and edited by Lee Frost [Love Camp 7, Chrome and Hot Leather, Incredible Two Headed Transplant, etc.]), Carl Walker Jr. and Jameison "Jim" Marsh, two bored, jaded hipster hedonists, cruise their convertible to cool jazz and neck with their big-haired, ponytailed girlfriends (four of them) on the way to the beach, where they drink, skinny-dip, make out, and frolic in the sand (lyrical EZ-listening interlude here). Sadistic misogynist Carl (Byron Mabe, director of She Freak, The Acid Eaters, etc.) demonstrates his theories about women ...by variously pinching, spanking, and cigarette-burning his girlfriend Joanie. He further elucidates, "There is only one thing in this whole crummy, square, infested life that counts. Kicks! Kicks! Kicks! You dig me?", but his rich daddy (also obviously played by Mabe in glasses and mustache) is threatening to cut him off financially if he doesn't start showing up at the office. Meanwhile, virginal blonde aspiring actress Jane Collins ("introducing Mai Jansson") arrives in Hollywood from Minnesota on a Greyhound Scenicruiser and rents a room from degenerate Mrs. Olson. In a dingy "dungeon" love nest at his father's factory, Carl spanks frosty Kathy into submission ("Don't! Stop! . . . Don't stop!"), while Jim seduces Ellen in the car ("You wanna feel my muscle? Start the countdown.") While copping from creepy Mrs. Olson, Carl and Jim meet Jane, and later, after Jim reels off a list of possible kick-producing activities ...She's kidnapped, terrorized, and assaulted, mostly by Carl, mostly off screen. Eventually the more sensitive Jim rebels, and Carl meets a gruesome end straight out of one of Friedman's gore films. Defilers plays kind of like a really kinky episode of Surfside Six or Perry Mason, Mabe is really over the top (better as an actor than director), and Jerome Eden (Blood Trilogy) as Jim occasionally bears an uncanny resemblance to Ben Stiller (!!). The violence is sporadic and not very graphic by today's standards, but still packs a bit of a jolt; gorehounds will find it very mild, while sensitive fuzzy-sweater types will probably be appropriately shocked and sickened. I found The Defilers mildly disturbing at times, but for the most part campy and entertaining, with rich early-'60s atmosphere, some screamingly funny dialogue, and Frost's crisp, moody B&W cinematography major assets.
Extras include an entertaining and informative commentary by David Friedman and Mike Vraney (apparently distributors were disappointed in Miss Jansson's "charms"); a wild trailer collection, some fun and campy (All Women Are Bad, Confessions of a Psycho Cat, Banned, Curse of Her Flesh), some REALLY sick-looking (The Pick-Up, Ultimate Degenerate), some just stupid (Sex Killer, Sock It To Me); two OK shorts, "Intimate Diary of Artist's Models" (4:00, color) featuring "Ajax" and "Sandy" from 'Scum' in standard nudie-cutie photo hijinks (see what's under Sandy's scarf!), and Naked Fury (10:00, color) wherein a photographer shoots photos of twin girls wrestling in their undies; and another 8-minute Trash-O-Rama exploitation art gallery. Prints of both features exhibit the usual light speckling and blemishing, but are otherwise plenty sharp with excellent tonal values and detail. A must-have for exploitation and Adults Only fans!

One Shocking Moment/The Abnormal Female/The Maidens of Fetish Street (1969) Review

One Shocking Moment/The Abnormal Female/The Maidens of Fetish Street (1969)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This DVD was the toughest I have ever reviewed. What has made this difficult is as is common Something Weird throw in so much stuff you almost have to grade them higher for providing so much extra content. There are 3 movies contained, the first "one Shocking Moment" gets a 10 out of 10 for reasons discussed later. Both The Abnormal Female & Maidens of Fetish Street both score a 0 out of 10, they are unwatchable ( in my opinion). Contained on the DVD as well are sexy Trailers for other Exploitation type fare & almost a lobby card format ( minus the pictures)with titles & content for other Shocktaculars from the early 60's. The 2 movies above that didn't make the cut were lacking any kind of direction, cohesive story, you name it. When these two hit the wall nothing stuck, that's it. "one shocking Moment " on the other hand is excellent. It rings very true, the story is well told the cast is solid & it is very kinky & yet there is a seemingly real perception as you watch this that this could happen & has happened. Briefly, a young woman & her husband move to the big city where opporitunity knocks. Yet this move brings out the worst in both of them. He is a womanizer & she is naive & unaware of how events are unfolding. Now enter Tanya ( played by Verne Martine)a nightclub owner who is very comfortable in a Dom/Lesbian persona & who provides the kinky fireworks that elevates this feature. As well though tough as nails she proves to be the only magnet that might draw this couple back together. Hero or villain her performance & believability is off the chart. So in summary I can recommend only one of three features but it is that good, the additional content for me makes it worth 4 stars.
I will throw in this disclaimer, the content of this DVD is an aquired taste, it is often amateurish & lightyears away from mainstream fare, just so you know.
