Scorpion Double Venom (1998) Review

Scorpion Double Venom (1998)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There's little to say about this routine action-thriller. A Federal Agent, Steve Woods (Tony Tunnelers), expert in martial arts, takes a personal vendetta against the killers of his childhood friend, Phil (Allen Williams). As usual, the bad guys are the men from the Middle East who challenge the U.S. with terrorist acts. This simplicity, however, makes this film watchable nowadays, when violence seems to count more than good scripts. Tony Tunnellers, as the main character, does fine his job, a fair performance expected from a champion karate turned into movie actor. Adding the good soundtrack by Sean Murray and you have a perfect and light matinée.

Score (Uncut & Uncensored) Review

Score (Uncut and Uncensored)
Average Reviews:

Yowza! "Score" is a product of it's times, the early 1970's, and it explores the sexual freedom spreading through society during that period with great insight. But be forewarned, the uncensored version took me by surprise. Radley Metzger adapted a New York City stage play about multiple seductions and transposed it to a Mediterranean setting. The acting, the camera work, and the setting combine to make a great looking product, without a doubt the best 'sexploitation movie' I have ever seen, and I've seen a bunch.
"Score" is a fast paced comedy about the interactions between two couples, and things eventually get pretty down and dirty without ever being X rated. Even better, the Blu-Ray looks magnificent, and there is a long interview with actress Lynn Lowry, behind the scenes footage featuring Radley Metzger in action on the set, and best yet an audio commentary by the reclusive director, all items alone worth the price. But the icing on the cake is that the movie is finally uncut for the first time in over 35 years.
I have seen the VHS of 'Score" and it was obviously the censored version. The interplay of dialogue and characters was there, but 15 minutes of man-on-man love making was missing. While not explicit, it is pretty graphic and I was shocked. If you are a homophobic male or think such images might upset you, STAY AWAY! However, if you truly want to see the 1970's swing in all directions, this is the best possible movie available in terms of acting, script, and direction.
Radley Metzger is generally considered the one true auteur of the sexploitation movies, and he consistently produced superior work even after drifting into porn. "Score" is perhaps his best work, literate, funny, and incredibly daring. Even 38 years after it was shot it still caught me off guard! If this sounds interesting, you can find no better document of the Sexual Revolution than 'Score".

K-Pax (Collector's Edition) (2001) Review

K-Pax (Collector's Edition) (2001)
Average Reviews:

This was one of those powerful movies that I "took personally"--especially since the blue jay is my totem and the blue jay figures a prominent role in this movie.
Kevin Spacey plays a psychiatric patient named Prot--but Prot claims he's really an alien from the planet K-PAX. Jeff Bridges plays Prot's psychiatrist and is convinced that Prot is delusional. But the Doctor's cynicism soon turns into fascination. Could Prot possibly be an alien? Or is there a perfectly logical, "earthly" reason for Prot's belief that he's an alien?
I don't want to give away any plot points, but this movie is thought provoking and utterly fascinating. You'll be scratching your head at the end--but a part of you will "get" it even if your mind does not. Some mystical themes I enjoyed in this movie is the existence of aliens, the possible messages of aliens, the power of belief in something beyond yourself, and the power of the mind.

Barbie Mariposa (2008) Review

Barbie Mariposa (2008)

My daughter waited for the latetest Barbie title, Mariposa only to be disapointed when it was released. The Butterfly Fairies are constantly being chased by creatures (Skeezites and a sea beast) which are trying to EAT them through the whole movie. There is also a Butterfly Fairy that betrays the queen and helps the Skeezites to try to eat all her friends. This is in a movie that is meant for little girls, I can't see how this was approved for release. This movie doesn't have the attributes of the other movies, it's too scary. My daughter keeps asking for us to "skip this part" because it's too scary. This movie only teaches our children they are too small and someone is always tryng to get them.

Green Lantern: First Flight (Single-Disc Edition) (2009) Review

Green Lantern: First Flight (Single-Disc Edition) (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Green Lantern: First Flight is an awesome film. It doesn't waste a lot of time on the origin (which takes place in the first few minutes) and heads straight to the action. Some people might see this as detrimental, but I like how the DC animated projects a lot of the time will just assume that you know the basics of what is going on. It saves a lot of time and allows the movie to start getting to the point.
First off, I was surprised at how brutal some of the violence was for this cartoon. I know that these releases are not necessarily tailor-made for children, but this is no JLU episode. People are impaled, shot, torn through walls into the vacuum of space, and there is pretty much non-stop fighting through most of the 120 minutes. I don't have any problem with that, but it might not be to everyone's liking.
Plot-wise, it's not Shakespeare, but we are talking about an action cartoon here. There is a hero, a villain and lots of cool use of the Green Lantern rings. Those were the only prerequisites I was looking for going in to this thing, and I was not disappointed.
The voice cast did a great job as well. If there is one thing that DC always does right, it is casting their voices. Michael Madsen as Kilowog was my personal favorite. Too bad he didn't have more voice time.
This might possibly be my favorite DVD project of theirs, which is saying a lot considering the fantastic Wonder Woman, New Frontier, and Gotham Knight DVD films. I sincerely hope they continue putting out quality releases like this one.

The Incredible Two-Headed Transplant/The Thing With Two Heads (1972) Review

The Incredible Two-Headed Transplant/The Thing With Two Heads (1972)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is certainly a double feature if I've ever seen one! Both films deal with the still unapproved surgical procedure of grafting a second head onto a human body. Just imagine how many lives will be saved when science finally gets this far. The Incredible Two-Headed Transplant is first on the bill. It's awfully funny, though it seems to be taking itself seriously. Wacky scientist, fired and disgraced from his surgeon job(for reasons never explained) decides to show the medical world he's worth something by creating a two-headed man. Sounds simple enough, he already has numerous two-headed animals. When an escaped rapist/killer tries to assault the doctor's wife, the doctor blows him away and sticks the head onto the local retarded handyman. Neither men consent to this. The operation is a success, and it certainly is incredible-incredibly stupid, that is. The doctor and his assistant actually seemed surprised that the thing goes on a killing spree after it escapes. I guess the doctor didn't think that he had just revived the head of the guy who tried to rape his wife. And to add to the fun, Casey Kasem is in it too! Some of the editing looks like this could have been a lost Russ Meyer movie...minus the boobs of course.
Next on the double bill is The Thing With Two Heads. This time the movie is going for laughs, and does succeed in a few spots. Though it's less serious, the explanation of grafting a second head is more believable this time. This is definately a career low for Ray Milland, who is established early on as a racist surgeon. He doesn't want to hire a black doctor even though he has a great reputation. Milland is dying of cancer and wants a body donor from death row to graft his head onto, then after his head adjusts to the body, remove the convict's head and replace it with his own. With time running out for Milland and only one donor, it turns out to be a black man who has other plans-he wants to clear his name of the crime he was accused of. Lots of chasing, including a long motorcycle chase where a record number of police cars are trashed. So, get yourself Domino's two for one pizza deal, kick back and enjoy the two-headed double feature.

Cheerleader Autopsy (2003) Review

Cheerleader Autopsy (2003)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I don't usually bother to review films on here, but I only write this in order to potentially save someone else from having to endure the misery that I just endured. I generally love campy B movies like the Toxic Avenger or Killer Klowns from Outer Space, but Cheerleader Autopsy was the most irreconcilably terrible film I have ever seen. After reading one other user's review, I expected an amusing horror/comedy with fairly intelligent dialogue accompanied by cheesy effects and nudity. On a positive note, the film did deliver cheesy effects, which elicited a giggle on one particular occasion, but that in no way made up for the rest of this mess. Even the gratuitous nudity of the average (at best) looking girls in this film couldn't save it. I had fairly low expectations going into the experience, and this film managed to be significantly worse than I had expected it to be. First off, the humor was most definitely NOT intelligent, unless you consider fart jokes and rubber penises to be intelligent. I find it hard to believe that anyone who completed grade school was involved in the production of this film, excepting the Pavlov reference which indicates that someone took high school psych.Such razor sharp witticisms as "You want a tip? Don't eat yellow snow" and other such drivel were anything but clever. The necrophilia humor was also done poorly. Humping the dead is not hilarious in and of itself, but the writer evidently thinks so and expected every reference to it to generate a reaction. The only reaction I had was to yawn and regret competely and utterly wasting the last hour and a half of my life on this hillbilly trash.
Note: Those with IQs tested ABOVE 100 should avoid this movie at all costs because they run the risk of significantly lowering their scores.

Tex Avery's Droopy - The Complete Theatrical Collection (1954) Review

Tex Avery's Droopy - The Complete Theatrical Collection (1954)
Average Reviews:

I wanted to take a star away because disc #1 contains some un-restored cartoons, in particular the first. I actually think the Laserdisc looks better! The grain is the same, but the LD colors are brilliant while the DVD colors are faded. All other cartoons look better on the DVD.
It appears that disc # 2 is restored & newly remastered, all of the cartoons look brilliant & sharp.
The five stars are for the cartoons themselves! These are real gems of the golden age of cartoons! Tex was an expert at throwing gags at you faster than you would know what hit you. But Tex did tend to repeat himself, so viewing this entire set in one sitting may lessen the enjoyment of some later cartoons.
It should also be mentioned that while Tex Avery's name is on the title of this DVD set, he only directed 17 out of the 24 Droopy cartoons. Which also means that 7 cartoons from this set would not appear on any possible future Tex Avery DVD collection.
There is a mistake on the DVD sleeve title listing, the credit reads "Cartoons 1-18 are directed by Tex Avery", but not all of them are! I know the last one on disc #1 is not a Tex Avery 'toon.
The extras on Disc #2 leave alot to be desired, the documentary is full of clips from the cartoons you just saw, with interviewers telling you why you laughed. But there is no real new information here. This is followed by a greatest gags clip show, which is pointless if you just watched the cartoons or the documentary. It seems all of the good Text Avery bonus material has already been used in the LOONEY TUNES DVD sets.

Droopy, a detective basset hound, lulls the bad guys into a false sense of security by acting slow and dumb when in actual fact he is a genius. The shrewd Droopy always outwits his enemies! Droopy Dog was a low-key animated movie character created by Tex Avery at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1943, this mournful deadpan witty Basset hound detective who spoke in a jowly monotone voice and, though he didn't look like much, was shrewd enough to outwit his enemies - the conniving Butch the Irish bulldog and the thieving, nasty wolf and English Fox. DVD Features:Documentaries:"Droopy and Friends: A Laugh Back" Â - a documentary retrospective featuring the highlights of Tex Averys iconic character and band of regular misfits, which made the collection so memorable and dear to our hearts. Â Peppered through the featurette will be moments reflecting on Texs early days, from inspiration, to his passions as an artist, entertainer and eventual auteur.Gag Reel:'Doggone Gags" - a montage of great moments from the Droopy series, culled together in the fashion of a gag reel.

Joshua (2001) Review

Joshua (2001)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As my wife and I sat down to watch this movie, we jokingly said, "Well at least we won't be hearing the F word every other sentence, there won't be any gratuitous sex scenes, or violence and gore." Instead, JOSHUA gave us both an exceptionally inspirational evening.
Director Jon Purdy knowing he wasn't going to be filming a shoot em up or even a hells a fire movie, relies instead on the simply beautiful story of a young man named Joshua who comes into the little town of Auburn and gives the religious people there a sense of community and belonging. In spite of the stereotypical hardhearted priest, Joshua bonds with the assistant pastor, and all the people in the town, regardless of their denominational preference. He helps rebuild a Baptist church; he goes to a Christian rock concert, and ultimately he has an audience with the Pope.
I can't praise this movie enough for the sense of love and acceptance it portrays. Tony Goldwyn gives his most effectively controlled performance of a stellar career; evoking the soft masculinity of a carpenter and the embodiment of friend and brothere, Goldwyn is perfectly cast. His final scenes with F. Murray Abraham and Giancarlo Giannini as the Pope are delivered with such quiet intensity, their impact is boundless.
Abraham is wonderful in a thankless role; his moment of epiphany, though sudden and brief, is awesomely presented. Kirk Fuller as Father Pat is the movie's comic balance, but there is a warmth and understanding in his performance that makes him all the more believable.
This movie made us feel good; it made us think; and its power of faith and love was inspirational. We loved this movie and thank Purdy and his crew for bringing us such a warm and simple affirmation of what's good in the world.

Cinderella (Walt Disney's Masterpiece) (1950) Review

Cinderella (Walt Disney's Masterpiece) (1950)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I believe that the 1950 Disney adaption of the fairy tale by Charles Perrault is one of the most popular Disney movies released since 1937. This movie is funny, sad, and charming at the same time, which may sound impossible for some movies.
I have watched this movie since I was 2, and I am now 12, and let me tell you that after 10 years, you never get tired of it. I have the Masterpiece copy on this page, and it is very, very worn out, so I cannot wait for Disney to re-release this classic on Disney VHS and DVD in 2007, so I can buy it and technically get my hands on it! :)
Anyway, this movie is about a girl named Cinderella, who's father and mother have both died. She is forced to live with her vain and ugly stepsisters and cruel stepmother, and furthermore is forced to become a slave in her own home.
Cinderella's only friends are the loyal mice, the birds, the dog an also the horse. One day, an invatation arrives from the palace, stating that every eligible maiden in the kingdom has to attend to a royal ball, honoring the return of the prince.
Cinderella's stepmother lies to her, saying she can go only if she gets her chores done, and if she finds something suitable to wear.
She does all her chores, while her animal friends make a dress for her. Sadly, the stepsisters tear it up, and leave. However, Cinderella meets her Fairy Godmother, who sends her off to the ball, but she has to be back before the stroke of midnight, otherwise, the spell will be broke...
Enjoy this Disney masterpiece once again, which proves that dreams can come true.

Little House on the Prairie - Special Edition Movie Boxed Set (Look Back to Yesterday / Bless All the Dear Children / The Last Farewell) (1983)

(Updated) Series on a whole: 5 stars++. Stories on this particular set: 4-1/2 stars. Video quality: 3-1/2 stars. Extras: 4 stars.
Why would I call this the "Best series in the history of television"? ...because it's BIG in heart and soul, the characters and stories have TREMENDOUS depth, and it's not bogged down by the politics of your typical western, or typical show for that matter. The storylines could go anywhere, and focus on anyone, or anything. There didn't have to be a villain of the week, a murder, etc. Come to think of it, this is one of the most "murder-less" westerns I have ever seen. If people died, it was more from life's hardships in the 1800's than from anything else. It may not have ended anywhere near as well as it came in, but when you look back at the series on a whole, I would still rank this as being the best of all TV series, and for a number of reasons.
The appeal of this series is much broader than most people give it credit for. The show wasn't just for little girls, as anyone looking at the cover of one of the Little House books might conclude. It was more a show about how to deal with the unexpected, with changes in life, and how to get along with your neighbors. There are life lessons to be learned here for everyone, from little girls to old men.
I doubt that we will ever again see a show quite like this, which so graciously teaches the lost values that we need in times like these. Network TV has become a desolate wasteland of high-tech crime scene dramas, court case TV, reality TV, infomercials, talk shows, extreme sports, and news programs. You will be hard-pressed to find much of a heart or soul in any of them, mainly just a lot of computer "gee-whiz" wizardry, and for the most part a waste of time in general. Meanwhile, Little House delivers both heart AND soul, so much so in the subtle ways that it influences you, that you can't help but walk away a better person afterwards.
Even if they did bring a show like this back (and they`ve tried), it would be EXTREMELY difficult to match the production values you will find here without a sky-high budget. Not to mention, many of the best character actors once employed by Hollywood, (many of whom appeared on Little House), are now long since dead.
SPOILERS FOLLOW... About this particular set... After Season 9 ended, a deal was inked to conclude the "Little House on the Prairie" series with the final three tele-movies contained here, the UNOFFICIAL "Season 10", which wraps up the series in a very peculiar and jaw-dropping way, literally going out with a BANG!!
Whether or not anyone likes the idea of the town being blown to smithereens in the end, or with the direction the series took in it's later years, Michael Landon and crew continued to crank-out very touching, emotionally-charged episodes to the bitter end. Casting, acting, directing, writing, set design, and the beautiful, harmonious music composed by the late David Rose all remained high-quality throughout the series. I can't say enough about the fine acting and music though, as well as the town layout - all First Class! Well... There were a few less than stellar casting decisions near the end of the run, but nothing worth spoiling the series over.
The final three films are somewhat of a mixed bag, and leave you with mixed emotions. I probably would have wrote them a bit differently if it were up to me, but they are still VERY MUCH worth the price of admission. The saddest, and my choice as the best of the three would be the first one, "Look Back To Yesterday", which will likely produce a few tears (video and sound quality is very good to excellent). As for "Bless All The Dear Children", the story is somewhat uneven and seems to drag in the middle, however the ending is quite good, and redeems any flaws. In all honesty though, I can't figure out why on earth they felt the need to tell this particular story as one of the last three of all time (video quality is good to very good). "The Last Farewell"... What can I say?... Does anybody really want to see the town get blown-up?? Michael Landon has always told stories about overcoming great adversity, and carrying on, but I feel that he took things a little too far here, maybe for no other reason than simply because he could. Not the best note for the series to go out on, but a very dramatic exit nonetheless, and once again it may bring you to tears. The video quality on this one, which I would have expected to be great, being the final installment, was actually the WORST of the three. The print that Imavision used for the transfer was surprisingly not the greatest. It was fairly dark, and the colors were faded. A real disappointment, as I expected something better for what I paid. Concerning the extras, the interviews of the two Melissa's were quite well done. I was hoping for more extras though.
A few odds & ends and closing comments... If I had any say with the powers that be, I would NOT have destroyed the exterior town setting at the Big Sky Movie Ranch (a big chunk of the ranch was recently sold to developers), and rather would have tried to preserve it as a museum/tour/theme park/resort, for all to enjoy in the years that followed. Not a chance of that happening now of course, after the final episode, plus the land around the shooting location is being developed like mad. Very poor decisions in the end by those responsible.
I would also like to add that while MANY of the episodes from Season box sets 1 through 3 were drop-dead GORGEOUSLY restored, I would like to see some kind of effort put into restoring the remainder of the series, which was very much a disappointing (to say the least!) "hit and miss" restoration effort, even if I have to pay for them all over again for the improved versions in another release of some kind. The series was THAT GOOD!!
Question: Why has there never been a music CD compilation of David Rose's best work from this series? They can put out a 4-disc collection of the original one-season Battlestar Galactica, but nothing for David Rose's Little House work?? ...someone who is considered to be the best in the business??
R.I.P., Little House, and thanks to all involved for putting on such a fine show. You have created a masterpiece that will be enjoyed for generations to come. Now if only Imavision or somebody else would restore the episodes that so desperately need it from the original 35mm prints, like they did with several of the early episodes, then we would really have something special.

The Mist (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) (2007) Review

The Mist (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) (2007)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
On the two disc edition of The Mist, on disc 2 there is a glorious Black and White version of the film, with an introduction by the director Frank Darabont. Darabont says he originally wanted The Mist to be in B&W and be a throwback to the 50's and 60's horror movies such as Night of the Living Dead, which I felt it had a lot in common with. Darabont says this can be considered his director's cut. I knew he directed two other King favorites The Shawshank Redemption (Two-Disc Special Edition) and The Green Mile, but I didn't realize his other contributions to the horror genre, until I checked out IMDB. Starting in 1980 as a production assistant on Hell Night and going on to write the screenplays for A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 - Dream Warriors, The Blob, The Fly II (Collector's Edition), and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.
The Mist is an entertaining, at times infuriating, tragic horror film filled with fun scares in the form of 50s and 60s era monsters lurking in the mist outside and the uglier monsters inside that apply to our present day, a true creature double feature.
Darabont reminded me of Romero and his use of horror and social commentary. Here he makes an atmospheric horror movie, our main character, David Drayton, played by, Thomas Jane, (Deep Blue Sea) designs posters for horror movies, followed by a big storm, and ultimately has David and his son (mom at home) trapped in a supermarket with the towns people. Similar to the mall in Dawn of the Dead [Blu-ray] evil lurks outside the market, not in the form of zombies that can be seen, but old school monsters that lurk out in the mist. That's the surface of the film, but as we go through the layers we find much more, such as the monsters that lurk inside the supermarket. Human nature, when afraid and backed into a corner and the role the military plays once the smoke clears are some of the movie's other factors.
The Black and White Version is the way to go, to get that old school feel the director intended, even the way the title on the dvd is written is like an old monster movie. Highly Recommended, one of King's best film adaptations.

From legendary frightmaster Stephen King and 3-time Oscar-nominated director Frank Darabont* (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile) comes "one of the scariest King films since Stanley Kubrick's The Shining" (Tasha Robinson, The Onion A.V. Club). After a mysterious mist envelopes a small New England town, a group of locals trapped in a supermarket must battle a siege of otherworldly creatures...and the fears that threaten to tear them apart. Starring Thomas Jane (The Punisher) and Oscar winner* Marcia Gay Harden (Mystic River) in one of the year's most talked-about performances, The Mist is riveting, with "tension like an ever-tightening clamp" (Colin Covert, Minneapolis Star Tribune).

The Banger Sisters (2002) Review

The Banger Sisters (2002)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Many critics have already not been kind to "The Banger Sisters". Perhaps they didn't like "First Wives' Club" either, but that film has become a Goldie Hawn classic. And "Banger Sisters" has all the same elements that will make this a screen and DVD favorite, as well.
The key to Hawn's success has always been successful partnering with other actors and actresses that act as a catlyst for her charm. In this film, she's fortunate to work with Susan Sarandon, perhaps even better with Goldie than the combination of Diane Keaton-Bette Midler. Sarandon's character is a little bit of both. The comedy is gentle and the message has both women, in their late forties, go in search of what has been missing from their adult lives. They have a crazy camaraderie that was born of shared experiences as rock groupies in the late 60's and early 70's, when sex and drugs were plentiful. Hawn's character, Suzette, has continued to live the experience, and the film opens with a scene of her being fired from her job as a bartender.
Sarandon's character (Vinnie, now Lavinia), took a different road when she split from Suzette, and she's now the successful wife of a wealthy man with political aspirations in Phoenix. Lavinia's devoted herself to the care and raising of her two daughters, and is dismayed, at first, when Suzette shows up. She's never confided her wild teenage experiences to husband or daughters, and they're frankly shocked at her choice of friends, and the influence Suzette seems to have over her. The contrast is best expressed when Vinnie realizes her whole life, like her perfectly kept and coordinated wardrobe, has been "beige".
A plot contrivance involves character actor Geoffrey Rush as a hapless writer who arrives with Suzette in Phoenix, and evolves from an obsessive schmuck to a man whose been woken up to life again by the unpredictability of life with Suzette . Rush is peerless in his role, and his character helps to add to the humanity that makes Suzette's life worthwhile.
"Banger Sisters" is not laugh out loud funny, but there are priceless funny moments, as Suzette and Vinnie are caught with a toke in Lavinia's basement, while browsing through the Polaroids they took of memorable "parts" of their affairs with rock icons. Sarandon is laughable in her uptight moments, using floral arrangements to make amends with Suzette, and cleaning up the kitchen when under stress. There are also some miscues that aren't believable, like the "throwing chicken" scene, and scenes in which young actress Eva Amurri (Sarandon's daughter in real life) goes over the top as a spoiled brat.
The soundtrack of the Banger Sisters does its own star turn in the movie, featuring old hits (Steppenwolf's " Rock Me", "Burning Down the House" by Talking Heads) new covers by unusual artists (Tommy Lee doing Bowie's "Fame", Trevor Rabin's cover of "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood") and great new songs by Richie Sambora and Dishwalla. The soundtrack is most evident in the movie's poignant scenes....Vinnie and Suzette dancing in a club, being "poster children" for a "got milk?" ad, and consoling each other outside the hospital where Vinnie's daughter is being treated.
Hawn and Sarandon are memorable and priceless in a little gem of a film. They light up the screen, make you believe in forever friendships, and hopefully set the stage to return to film as a duo.
I disagree with reviews that label this a mediocre movie, and urge you to see it, and enjoy!

I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell (2009) Review

I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell (2009)

I read the book and thought it was funny. I'm not a Tucker Max fanboy or hater, but this movie was painful to sit through. It even made the book lose some of the humor in it because it felt so fake. If your a fan of the straight to DVD American Pie films then you may find a few laughs in this, otherwise save your time and money. The characters in this aren't interesting, the acting is bad, the plot is unoriginal and meaningless, and there just aren't many laughs. Every once in a while it will make you smirk but by the end of the movie you will have forgotten why. This is one film to avoid...

Leaves of Grass (2009) Review

Leaves of Grass (2009)

Leaves of Grass isn't a movie that you can easily categorize. While it doesn't offer up laughs every few minutes, it's still a clever comedy in the vein of a Coen Brothers film. But you also can't quite call it a black comedy completely in the spirit of Burn After Reading or Fargo. It's equal parts crime drama, humor, romance and philosophy.
The film revolves around the intertwining lives of two identical twins, played by the incredibly talented Edward Norton. Ivy League philosophy professor Bill Kincaid is lured back to his Oklahoma hometown as part of a scheme cooked up by Mary Jane growing brother Brady. The first half hour of the film moves slowly but quickly gains momentum when the two siblings eventually cross paths.
The best part of this movie is easily watching Norton put on brilliant performances as both brothers. The supporting cast is top-notch as well, especially director Tim Blake Nelson in the role of Bolger, Brady's partner in crime. Nelson slips into the role effortlessly, which is no surprise considering he himself is a real-life Okie (a Jewish one at that, which influences a subplot of the movie). My only gripe with casting was Richard Dreyfuss as Jewish gangster Pug Rothbaum, with Dreyfuss giving one of the most bizarre attempts at a Southern accent in film.
I enjoyed the cinematography, Jeff Danna's work on the score, and the infusion of philosophy into the film. As a Southerner, I appreciated the fact that Brady's accent was no reflection on his intelligence. While not as well-read as his sibling, he still gets the occasional profound message across. The only real complaint I have about the film are the jarring scenes of violence. Considering it's not entirely a dark comedy, scenes that involved murders seemed extremely out of place in this movie.
Overall, watching Edward Norton effectively tackle two completely different roles was a real treat. If you enjoy a good drama or comedy that makes you think, definitely check this one out.

Patrice O'Neal - Elephant In The Room (2011) Review

Patrice O'Neal - Elephant In The Room (2011)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This stand up special is rooted in Patrice's unique views on topics we might have heard covered by other comics but not like this. Patrice not only makes every topic his own, he takes you places you may not have wanted to go making you laugh along the way.
He covers race, sexual harassment, cheating, relationships, animals, football all in an hour special that makes you wish he was given two hours. He has a charisma that connects with the audience that most comics (at least the comics on Comedy Central) seem to be lacking.
Patrice is one of the best comics that America has not heard of and not for his lack of talent and comedic ability. Buy this special, see him live, you will not be disappointed.
